Guest Stevebel Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 This is a question for people who have taken their own car to Australia. My wife wants to take her semi-exotic German car with us when we go to Australia. The costs and pitfalls of doing that are well documented around these forums, and that's all fine. What I can't find any information about is... 1. Do Australian insurers charge a premium for insuring an imported vehicle? 2. If we get a certificate of no claims discount, will insurers typically accept that? If the answer to (2) is "no" then a quick online quote with a random post code from a Sydney suburb suggests that we'd be paying close to AU$4K/year to insure it, which would be a bit silly. Any advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Steve.
JayBone Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I insured my imported VW van with shannons, who are a specialist (enthusiast) insurer. I have an agreed valuation with them of $60,000, plus i get to keep the wreck (God forbid) and it includes windscreen cover and 65% no claims discount, which they havent even asked for proof of? my policy is just short of $800 a year, with a lower agreed valuation of $40,000 that would have dropped to $600. Good luck.
Guest Stevebel Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Good stuff. Thanks Jay. I can't get an online quote from Shannons (they don't show her car at all), but I've bookmarked them and will give them a bell closer the time Motor insurance - no matter which way I measure it - definitely seems alot steeper in Aus than in the UK though.
