We have a pool, a reasonable size and a kidney shape. Now the chlorine and ph levels are spot on, but it keeps going green. I regularly have to brush down the sides due to the build up of algae. It is not a heated pool, so we have a pool cover on it. Any advice please or what can I get for it that will take it back to being clear and sparkling again?

Thank you

Algae love phosphates and nitrates. I would check them.

Hi Claire i build swimming pools in the uk and have a pool at my house in spain. even though your ph is close im supposing around 4/ 5.5 it has to be 7 to 7.5 this can make a difference and same with your chlorine you can bang chlorine in till your eyes burn but if the ph is not bang on you will get algee you may need to put an alkalie in to bring back the waters acidity or if high visa versa.. i buy a 5 in 1 tablet that you are better of sticking in your skimmer this regulates all. if you have a big problem with algee you can get a powder called flock or flockulant sprinkle this all over the top it will sink and take all the algee to the bottom if you have a sump outlet sweep it down, if not hoover it out then completely back wash your filter for a good 5 / 7 minutes it will take about 6 to 8 inches of water out the pool but this is nessecerry also if you sand as been in the filter for over 5 years it could be contaminated and need changing.

hope this helps Andy

Cheapest way...fill it full of concrete and get an outdoor spa!

Take a sample of your pool water in a plastic bottle to your local pool shop and get them to test it for you.

They will then give you a read out and tell you what and the amount of chemicals you need and instructions on how to put them in the pool.

Tell them how your pool looks as well.

We take a sample to our pool shop roughly every 6-8 weeks and have had no problems so far.

It will probably be balck algae or phosphates. We had the same issue and i kept taking samples to our local pool shop , walking away $100s lighter and not solving the problem. I changed shop ,explained my problems and they tested for phosphates, some pools just carry a higher level, once treated it is fine ,i just have to does it every year or it does the same. It could turn green overnight which is quick and scarey when you dont know why.

Birds, Ducks, Fretaliser, Weedkiller, Leaves etc can all cause high phosphate levels.

If it is the Algae, try a bottle of Hot Spot, its for tough to treat black and mustard algae and works a treat. ( if its algae it will look like dust when you brush the sides or steps of the pool)

Hope this helps

If it has got really bad, you should 'super chlorinate' basically a shock treatment of chlorine to kill all the nasties.

This should kill the algae.

Make sure you then brush the pool and vacuum all the algae and dirt out to the waste.

You can then revert to normal pool maintenance.

To super chlorinate use at least double normal chlorine dose. Or see you pool shop for advice.

Thank you for all your advice. We super chlorinated the pool to "shock" it and it seems to have worked, the pea green look has gone. It is still slightly cloudy but it is in the sun all day too. We have also cleaned the filter out. I think having a pool is like having another child, the amount of love and caring it needs is crazy!

Thats good news.

Is it a salt pool or normal chlorine ?

It's a chlorine pool. We have also kept the cover off it as it was getting too warm. I was in it today with the brush and touch wood it is looking better. All ready for New Year!
