Hiya peeps on this forum a merry christmas to all here and down under.

I have travelled most of OZ lived in Perth and Melbourne mostly on holidays and working student visas. Have been sucked back into the English way of life and am now to scared to leave because I think it would be tough to rebuild our life back in the UK i believe or maybe i have just been made misrable and negative by living in England for to long.

We have a baby boy and thinking about moving to OZ on a skilled migrant visa. I moved back 4 years ago after missing family and friends. I now have a my own family and feel bored living in the uk sitting on the sofa wathcing tv and miss the lifestyle but am afraid to up sticks with my little boy and would like more children but worry about the lack of support going it alone in oz.

Is the grass greener should we bite the bullet and give it a shot. Any comments appreciated. I have had a flying visit up the east coast but hear the suburbs of brisbane is a lovely place to bring up a family. I found Perth a little cut off and Melboure suited my single gal lifestyle. My partner is an estate agent/commercial property valuer.

Not better to grow up in either Country to be honest, you will grow up fine with good parents in either Country.

But there are more and far better opportunities in Australia...

This is your valid opinion, but it is not a statement of fact. Good parenting means happy children, whether the children are in one first world country or another makes no difference.

OP - I don't believe the grass is greener or less green, but touch wood, very pleased we made the move so far. I don't know we will stay forever, it is too soon to say. If you have a yearning to come here then I think give it a go whilst you can.

Not true bobj, you can have a great life in either Country, plus Brisbane does not look like that :biglaugh:

A strange 1st post, if you are miserable and negative in the UK I suggest it is down to the individual. The grass most definitely is not greener, it does grow bloody fast with all this rain though.

Neither country offers better or more opportunities and neither is better for kids to grow up in. At the end of the day it is up to you if you want to sit around on the sofa or not.

Is the grass greener? No,but for some it is a new start that works out well and for others it does not pan out so well.Like any new start it can go either way,the outcome depends highly on what you are prepared to put in and what you expect to get out of it.A new start anywhere brings a burst of motivation, hopes and possibilities, all the ingredients you need to set your life on a better path. Some get here and never look back, others wish they had expended their energy on creating a new and better life back home.If it is your dream,go for it if you can because you may well regret it if you don't.Try to have an exit strategy though as this will make the whole thing less risky.Good luck.

Having moved to Australia when I was 13, so experienced both places as a child, I do feel Australia is a much better environment fro bring up kids.

The weather, beaches, parks, wide open spaces are great for kids.

I feel it is still safer to the UK in general.

However, if you have no family in Australia or wide circle of friends it may be hard to enjoy many of these things on your own.

Id definatly say not greener !! Life can be very lonely with no family or true friends around !!

But that is the absence of your family and established friends.

It is not the country itself.

My view is the country is a lot better, but if you don't have an established support network you won't be able to make the most of it.

It would be the same in reverse, an established aussie migrating to the UK would find it equally as tough.

Yeah same here, I experienced both countries as a kid and prefer the UK. I see absolutely no proof whatsoever that Australia is safer, if it makes people happy to think it I have no problem with it really but to generalise about it is crazy.

I spent quite a few of my younger years in the UK and finished my schooling there and I spent most of my free time outside, this belief that kids are cooped up inside os just ridiculous.

To the OP,only YOU can decide, thru good luck, bad luck or planning,NOBODY can forecast your fortunes,do what im gonna do.............go and let fate decide if its for you or not,DONT listen to others, because their agenda's or whats "better/worse" for them might not be your agenda, theres far to many pro/anti oz posts on here to form an opinion,be singleminded and form your own............good OR bad.

If you are feeling restless and you really want to move I would say do it - especially whilst you are young. If you don't you will always wonder and always have that little niggle of disappointment that you didn't give it a shot. Is the grass greener? In some ways but not in others. There is a freedom here which is hard to describe- not just physical but emotional too. On the other hand , if you have no friends or family here the onus is on you to work hard at making contacts- and this is not always easy. Luck comes into it too.

Why are you on PIO you are back in the uk and you join a Poms in Australia site this month, why?

Are you that board in the uk, you think ......... i know i will join an Australian site and it will help me acclimatise back in the uk.

Seems odd to me.

Anyway, i would say to the OP if you are ready for a change and want to do something different give it a go.

Jim leave them be mate,,,,

As for the Grass being greener,, Damn yeah its greener here in Oz for us, but as with anything, it can only be as green as you make it.

When you land its like dead earth, only you know how much effot and time you are willing to put into it to make it lush,, it doesnt and won't happen overnight.

IMO it can depend on who you are, your drive, focus & stability. Where you live, outside influences (Family/friends). If you sit on a couch just watching TV in the UK...... well guess what, you'll probably do the same on the other side of the world. There are many things to do in all weather in the UK, as there is in AU. Its all down to the individual and your personal drive.

For myself I prefer the UK. My experience wasn't pleasant in AU due to a marriage breakdown within my 1st year of getting there. But even before then I found it difficult to settle. So for me, was the grass greener? Yes it was to begin with, thats why I moved there..... but when reality set in and I had no-one life was very lonely and unhappy, I appreciated my home land much more and yearned to come home.

My advice would be to hold on to any property and bank accounts you have in the UK for a set amount of time to ensure you have a safety net, give yourselves a time frame to settle in AU and do your homework on where you wish to settle. Visit before you move and don't fall into the thoughts a lot of people do, which is to expect a much better quality of life instantly, rose tinted glasses off and be realistic. If you have children I would read the thread on 'General Chat' about 'What happens to the children if one of you wants to go home', its a sticky and a must read for anyone thinking to move with children.

I wish you and everyone else thinking of the move good luck, my life may have been different if my marriage had lasted and we had lived in a different area. But it didn't last so my experience wasn't fun. I wouldn't wish my experience on anyone so prepare yourself before the move.
