Locksmith???

Hi Guys

Hoping you can help.....me and my husband really want to move to australia but just dont qualify. Looking at the list Locksmith has been on there a while but as there is no formal qualification here in the UK I was wondering if anyone has emigrated to Oz on this skill and what the process was.

I should mention that neither of us are locksmiths but happy to retrain....which raises the issue of experience?

My husband is a retail manager with 5 years exp and I am an executive PA...they dont need us over in Oz!!!

Any advise would be greatly appreicated!

Welcome to PIO Sabrina.

Interesting strategy - choosing a job from the list and then aiming for it :)

As I understand it, all skilled migration paths require a number of years' experience though, so this will be a long-term strategy if you see it through.

By the time you come to actually apply, the rules - and the skills list - could well have changed, so it's also a very risky approach.

That said, there was a thread earlier in the year about existing locksmiths trying to work out what the Immigration authorities expect when there are no formal qualifications in the UK:

Good luck!

Would you not be better doing an occupation where the criteria for migation is less vague?some kind of trade,IT or nursing maybe? good luck anyway

My OH is a locksmith with the relevant experience, but when we looked into it, it was so difficult to get any kind of straight answer off of anyone regarding the relevant qualification that we gave it up as a bad job and went on my qualifications instead ( hairdreser).

The nearest we ever got information wise, was that he would have to go over to Aus to be assesed under their qualifications which would in itself cost thousands, that would be after sepending thousand of pounds initially in the Uk for the initial training that he undertook (£3,500 or thereabouts).

So, if I were you I'd definatley look at another occupation to train under.

Good luck, and if you're determined, you'll get there in the end. xx

They make it so hard so that Australia isn't like the place you are trying to escape from!

Best regards.

That made me smile. When we first looked at emigrating in 92 the job situation in Oz was as dire as the UK and not much was on the list. "Tuna long line fisherman" was on the list month after month.

I was a bit like Yosser "I can do that".

I have talked with people who were able to get their qualifications approved in Australia and they live a great life there.. It is a bit difficult for a locksmith to go there... but it's really not mission impossible. With your relevant experience and a little bit of luck you guys are there soon.Just be persistent if you think you want to live of that in the future... Good LUCK!
