Hi All,

My first post on this forum, although I have to say it seems really friendly and has already been a great help. My husband (37) and I (35) have 2 boys (3 1/2 and 1 1/2) and currently live in West Yorkshire. My husband works for the Aus office of his company but is based in UK and we now have the chance to move to Oz. We're both excited about the opportunity and feel that we must give it a try, life is too short not to. We have just received his compensation package and are now looking into costs of everything so we can negotiate. I hope not to work for a few years yet as the boys are both so young and we have so much to discover together. My husband will have to commute to the Eagle Farm area so we are looking at North Brisbane. We would welcome any suggestions of family friendly areas pref near the coast (as I think it will be the only way my hubby will survive the heat). Definately also looking to make some friends to meet up with, my boys love play dates and we don't know anybody yet!

Tips, advice...anything (well almost anything :jiggy:) welcome.

Hi and welcome to PIO

We live in sunnyless west yorkshire as well in the upper market area of Dewsbury by the slag heap. Are you in Ilkley? are you snowed in? still enjoy the arctic condidtions? Dreading the thought of living in the warm sunshine?

Only jesting, ask any questions you want and people will reply and pm me if you want a chat. All the best and merry christmas.

Hi Hoff,

Thanks for your prompt to ask questions. We only just got our offer so we're researching a bit before we fire a load of questions at people that have all been asked before! We are in Ilkley but not much baht 'at going on here, it's been -10degC! We are so excited about going but to be honest I don't think we'll believe it until we get off the plane!

Are you going soon? Where are you off?

Hi Louise

Time will fly by...so been prepared.... we land on 25th January 2011 and I have soooo many lists of thing to do it's quite scary. BTW I am Jayne 38 and originally from West Yorkshire...my OH is Angie 31 from Cambridgeshire. We are migrating on a 457 visa and received job offer April 2010 and our visa was processed Sept 2010. We didn't fly out earlier due to job commitments in UK.

What type of visa are you guys applying for? Please feel free to message me on this thread or by private mail if you have any questions. Loads of folks on here were very helpful to me so I am only too happy to return the favour.

Regards

Jayne

Hi Jayne,

We'll be on a 457 visa. We are quite lucky because my husband already works for the company but has been based in Leeds for the last two years. They have said it will be 6 weeks to process the visa application through their agent but I'm sure this is not set in stone!

Thanks for your offer of help, much appreciated.

Hi Louise

we are looking at heading to Brisbane, but we haven't ruled anywhere out, well maybe Melbourne, i need great weather for long spells, i have had enough of the horrible weather here. We are down about $200,000 since we started the visa process and we are waiting for the exchange rate to go up, but it might be a long wait, we have both put in for redundency, so this might make the money we have lost, back up.

$200,000, wow that's is a lot of money! We lost all our capital in the great housing slump here in UK so have little to take with us. As things stand here we're unlikely to get back on the property ladder because of the ridiculous deposits the banks are asking for. Hopefully the situation in Oz will be better...either that or we have a nice big tent! Do you have your visa now, how come it cost you so much?

Hi to the above two posters

we haven't got a date yet, but we are talking positively about going, hopefully this year, but our visas lasts till nov 2014, so hopefully the exchange rate will go up evetually and because of this and the uk housing slump we are down about $200,000, but we have both applied for redundency AGAIN, so fingers crossed we will get it to make up the money we have lost.
