tasormelb Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Hi, I am still in UK - I have a permanent residency visa and we are leaving for Oz May 2012. I am after advice please: I currently work in a hospice and have been there for 2yrs. I mostly enjoy my job but it can be very intense and sad for obvious reasons! I feel valued in my work and work with a fab team. I have specalist palliative care skills and the trend is moving towards more active tratment so still do IV antiiotics, IV fluids, blood transfusions and clinical obs etc. My employers also know my plans to go to Oz and are fully supportive. Now prior to this i worked in an Oncology ward in a busy general hospital. My old boss is asking me to go back. I left as we were so short staffed practice felt unsafe, i was not valued, had to pay to park but could never find a space to put the car etc. Why then should I go back you say - well I think that having current work experience in an acute ward together with chemotherapy admin skills will make it easier to get a job in Oz but if I go back it will be a very hard and difficult year as things there have not changed! I am after your thoughts - if i stay in my current position until we go do you think my experience and skills will stand me in good stead or do you think I should sacrifice my job satisfaction and work life balance for 12mths to give me better prospects in Oz. Thanks Vanessa
Guest The Ropey HOFF Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Sorry - i don't know the answer to this, i will bump it up to the front so hopefully you will get the answer you want, best of luck.
Petals Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Only thing I know is that being unhappy at work makes a long day. We have a specialist cancer hospital in Melbourne the Peter Mac. Also we have palliative care facilities here. Of course our other large hospitals also have oncology departments. I have had some experience of using the facilities, my daughter has cancer, she attended one of the oncology clinics where they have specialist nurses administering the chemo, these are day clinics. Very busy places.
tasormelb Posted December 26, 2010 Author Posted December 26, 2010 Thanks for your reply Petals - I hope that your daughter is doing well with her treatment and I wish her all the best for the future xxxx
