Guest Revs30 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Hello all, I have recently been offered 2 jobs on relocation packages. Bother off the same in ways of package, salary etc, but having never been to Oz i'm looking for some advice. One is in Wodonga and the other in Gippsland. I have a wife and 2 children (3yrs and 1yr old) and unsure what one to take. Dilemmaaaaaa!!!! Any advice would be extremely appreciated Revs
paddygunner Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 We looked into wodonga and sent email to the migration dept of town council and received a very informative info pack. www.wodonga.vic.gov.au Try them.
Quoll Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 All depends where in Gippsland - it's a very large area, some of which is gorgeous and some of which I wouldnt touch with a barge pole. Albury-Wodonga is that little bit further from Melbourne and the sea but closer to the mountains. In general Gippsland is slightly cooler and wetter than inland and some parts have been known to flood especially the Mitchell. It seems to me that the towns are closer together in Gippsland than they are up near Albury but that may be just my memory.
Guest Revs30 Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Not sure exactly where yet within Gippsland as not getting the full information until references and international police checks are all completed. I guess I will just have to wait until after the new year and update you when I have more details.
Petals Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Depends where in Gippsland as has been said. The towns in Gippsland are not as large as Albury/Wodonga. I like the north central area and there are lots of small towns quite close to Wondonga if you did not want to live in the city. Shopping in Albury is good, there are universities there, large hospitals etc. It is hot in summer but then if you like skiing its close to the snow fields in winter. Lots of things to do around there. Once you know where in Gippsland easier to advise, parts are hilly and lovely and other parts are flat.
Guest TaniaandRob Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Hiya, I spent the first 18 years of my life in Gippsland and visited Albury-Wadonga a number of times too. What job do you do? Or who is the company? I might be able to guess where in Gippsland - otherwise keep me posted and I can tell you all about the area. We are moving home to Gippsland in February to a small town called Boolarra. Good luck.:12:

Before that they lived in Mirboo North, another nice little town. The main towns are Sale, Bairnsdale and the lovely Gippsland Lakes towns and then there is the Latrobe Valley but I wouldn't want to live in that part really.

Hiya, We were very lucky and our home of 30 years was saved from the fires (mum is still there) and that is where we are moving home to. If your daughter lost her house she must have been a close neighbour. I also went to BPS from 1986-94 and we plan for our kids to go there. We probably know each other or at least of each other.
starlight7 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 They lived up MacIntoshes Road. We used to go down to the Folk Festival. They lived there for about 6 years. I think there are a couple of tiles in the town park that their little son and daughter designed after the bushfires. They lived on their block in a caravan for a long time after and rebuilt but then moved away. The bushfires changed them a bit- not really settled down yet.
Guest Revs30 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Well, we have taken the job in Wodonga. My wife has got a social work job in the Hume district and it all looks very nice. We are used to a quiet village life to be honest but I was born and raised very close to London so also used to a busy city (although i know it will be quieter than London!). Would be good to meet some people when we arrive end of March/April time. Like i say, we have a 1yr old girl and 3yr old son. Its a big move as have never been to Oz before but i'm sure given time we will all love it, especially the children.
billington22 Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Hi! Brilliant news. My husband and I along with our 2 small children (1 yr old & 5 yr old) moved to Woodonga from the UK in September. Didn't know anyone & had no jobs lined up. Since we got here we've both got jobs & made a few friends. Wodonga is a beautiful place! Outdoor pool that our kids love! The people are so friendly and helpful! And Albury is 10 minutes away. Much better shopping there. Have you been in touch with Johanna from the settlement agency at Wodonga council? She's lovely & really helped us! Good luck with the move & give us an email when you arrive - we'll all meet up!
olly Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 My brother lives in Paynesville, 20 minutes out of Bairnsdale, and it is nice, but Wodonga is bigger and of course is on the border with New South Wales. Quite nice place. If at all you had been going to do child protection work in Gippsland I would have told you don't even think about it, as they are overloaded with cases, and apparently loads of Brits who came over to do the job have returned to UK or gone onto other jobs around the area (which is exactly why I don't do the job either!) Good luck in Wodonga, it's a pretty good town for everything.
starlight7 Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Yes good luck - I am sure you will like it up there, usually nice and warm and good shops at Albury.
Guest Revs30 Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Thanks to all for advice and support! @ billington - we haven't been in touch with anyone yet as still to find out start date (start of new year no doubt due to Christmas and holidays). We will definitely have to meet up
Guest Toorak Trev Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Thats very sad about the overworking. Have heard the same from a number of different sources. Is it something local business needs to get involved with? to help with the work load?

If you are referring to my post T/T, the new Vic Govt is addressing the issue, the community in Gippsland deserves better.
