Guest Traceyg2108 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Could someone please give me some advice on the weather in Melbourne. Myself and my boyfriend need to make a decision on whether to move to Melbourne or Brisbane. A fairly big factor in this decision is the weather! Could a very nice reliable Melbourne resident please tell me what the weather is like? In particular when people says its rains a lot..is that all year or just for a month or two? Your help would be very much appreciated. Tracey
Life on easy street Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 This question has been asked before on a few posts. http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/victoria/26500-melbourne-weather-truth.html http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/victoria/50802-melbourne-climate.html If you live in the dandnong ranges which is a beautiful part of Melbourne you can get a lot more rain than in central Melbourne.
furkew Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Those 2 threads sum it up pretty well, but we have had a particularly wet & cold winter compared to previous years due to "El Nina" Water reserves are up to above 50% and still rising (and as you will read in the second thread, they were at 38% in early 2009 & dropped even lower in 2010) and snow fell in Mount Hotham last Sunday with temperatures of -7, but that is unseasonal for the time of year.
furkew Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 If you live in the dandnong ranges which is a beautiful part of Melbourne you can get a lot more rain than in central Melbourne. Tell me about it !!!!! I'm trying to finish building my man cave & the rain this last week is driving me bloody bonkers. Hopefully the colorbond turns up tomorrow arvo & I can get the roof on and finish it off.
VictoriaP Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 We've been in Melbourne for almost eight months now and the weather has been dreadful. Very few nice days and it's suppose to be Summer now. We keep being told that the weather this year is very unusual, but it doesn't make living with it any better. We're keeping our fingers crossed that Jan and Feb will be good, but two months of sun, won't make up for the rest filled with rain! Brisbane will be much warmer but you'll have the humidity to deal with. For me, humidity is fine if all you're doing is lying around a pool all day, but I wouldn't fancy having to work in it. It really depends what you're looking for. They are great things about both places, but if sunshine really is the more important thing to you, I'd head to Brisbane. x
Petals Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Difficult one, Melbourne has just had over 12 years of drought forcing water restrictions and this last year the drought has broken and we have had rain. Long term residents are very very pleased with the rain. I like Spring Autumn and Winter in Melbourne as not a fan of heat. In the summer here we get heat waves 40 degrees and usually a north wind blows very strongly on those days. So its batten down the hatches until the cool change comes through which it does and then everyone heaves a sigh of relief. Its usually a dry heat here in Melbourne no humidity which is fine by me. Hate humidity, humidity at 26 degrees can be unbearable. Usually we have a coolish December and Jan with odd hot days and then as soon as the children return to school first week its hot as its February and February is the hot month. March April and May are lovely months, warm days and cool nights. We get four seasons of the year here. Depends whether you want to have heat all year round then you would not pick Melbourne. Perth has a very dry heat and a lot of people love the climate there. Adelaide can be very hot in summer and its a dry heat there. Have a look on the web at the weather site and you will get a better idea. Our rentals in Melbourne do not all have central heating or airconditioning so some find this off putting as it gets cold in winter, not like UK but if the house is not well insulated it will feel like it.
olly Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 As Petals says we locals can't get enough of the rain after so long in the drought - and as I mentioned on another thread we are in the middle of some extra seasonal events caused by the La Nina weather pattern causing big dumps of rain across the easter seaboard, but it hasn't been cold rain very often. Remember that if you choose Queensland, there are only two seasons there - the Wet season and Dry season, whereas Melbourne has the four seasons and it can be cranky at times and very quickly. Also because of the rain, the mosquitos have been very bad this year, and I have seen a few more spiders than I'd like as they coming in from the rain, oh and we have a plague of locusts around outer Melbourne at the moment. But if you choose Melbourne - welcome, we love it, but some don't. There are lots of Brits here though !
Guest The Pom Queen Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Hi and welcome to Pomsinoz. I think you have had some great replies from members who have been in Melbourne most of their life if not all. We spent 7 years in Melbourne and enjoyed the weather, however we soon acclimatised and the last 12 months in Melbourne we have struggled. Like Petals said Melbourne is now coming out of the drought which is a good thing, but if the weather is going to be like the last 6 months then I am glad we moved. We are in Queensland now and enjoying the warmth, yes you do have the humidity but if you work indoors then it doesn't really bother you as long as you have the aircon.
starlight7 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 The weather this year has been wonderful in Melbourne. Such a relief from sunshine day in and day out, brown grass, bushfires and extreme heat. My garden has come back to life, the tiny little sitellas have returned together with all the rosellas, king parrots and lorikeets. Personally I like the range of weather we get down here, it makes life interesting and there is nothing better than snuggling up in front of a woodfire in Winter. I like Brisbane too but not in the Summmer months. Brisbane is wonderful all the time except Dec, Jan, Feb and part of March when it is very hot and humid. It is a different type of heat from Melbourne which can go up to 45 degrees C sometimes in Summer.
Guest Traceyg2108 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Thank you all for your replies...really helpful. I'm not sure why we are finding it so hard to make a decision...but we are!
Skani Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Could a very nice reliable Melbourne resident please tell me what the weather is like? In particular when people says its rains a lot..is that all year or just for a month or two? Have a look at these 2 pages of information (below) for Melbourne and Brisbane to compare. On average Melbourne has between 7 and 15 rainy days depending on the month and Brisbane between 5 and 12 each month. However Brisbane's total rainfall is about 30% higher than Melbourne's. Brisbane's wetter months are in the summer - hence the humidity - and Melbourne's are in the winter.
