Guest guest32776 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Is anyone else moving away from Australia (whether back to the UK or not) and feeling demoralised by being relentlessly thwarted by, what many would argue to be the over-regulation of jobs and business in Oz? We are considering moving to France in a year or so and would like to start a small business - in Oz we haven't considered this seriously due to the fact everything requires some silly Tafe course to prove you can do the bleedin' obvious, endless licences and so many hurdles through red tape. I feel as though this has affected our entrepeneurial side!! Will it come back once we have gone? Is anyone else worried they won't shake the Aussie 'can't do' mindset?
Guest chris955 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 In Australia they like to wrap the red tape in copious amounts of...yep....red tape.
Guest guest32776 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 I've got to the stage where my bright ideas are drying up. Initially we looked at lots of opportunities and as we researched each one the whole idea was just sucked dry by the proof of skills we would have to show - none of which can be fast tracked of course - the licences and long winded application processes. I hope this evaporates when we depart and I can differentiate between what is a 'down under ting' and what is more customary for us - otherwise you get to the stage of having to 'invest in your future' to take in ironing or pour a pint!!

Funny this reminded me of one of those World Bank reports I came across recently. Found it. Wouldn't move to France by the look of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ease_of_Doing_Business_Index "For example, according to the Doing Business 2010 report, Australia ranked third on the first subindex "Starting a business" behind only New Zealand and Canada."

Your displaying a 'no can do' attitude there! Around half of the people I know here run their own business - trades, professional services, engineering. Not one of them has whinged about red tape. I'll bring it up with them. Cheers.

Guest guest32776 Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Yes. Read the post again and you'll find it. :wubclub: or look here Starting a Business Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia If you check out the link that was posted you can see Australia is clearly marked 10th. Ease of Doing Business Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I doubt I'm the first person to point out just how over regulated Australia is......it isn't exactly news. Most Aussies would agree with me.

I think the original post was attempting to direct you towards the table for "Starting a Business" rather than "Ease of doing business" (Which as you say has Australia as 10th). You did seem to be questioning the difficulty in starting a business. I doubt you are the first person to feel that there is a host of red tape here. Like I said, it doesn't seem to bother the locals. France is a great country but I suspect there is equal, if not more, bureaucracy to navigate when setting up a business there. Good luck though wherever you chose to head off to next.
Guest Bonzie Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Speaking as a plumber / gas fitter and working n the building industry the red tape levels are about the same, approx waist height!
