What gave you the idea?

This is where it has to start with everyone, with an idea. That idea is simply “I think I’d like to move to Australia”.

We first went to Aus in 2001 to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. The only reason my husband and I first visited Aus was because my husband's father won the tickets in a competition. Unfortunately for him, he gave the tickets to us to go in his place as he was diagnosed with cancer. To jump forward a few chapters, he is a survivor (twice) and now celebrates his 76th birthday. So we went and we fell in love with Australia instantly and there started the idea. But it was just an idea, so we went back a second, third and fourth time, it then became 'the dream', which then became reality...our flights are booked and we leave ole blighty on April 30th 2011 with permanent resident visas. From start to finish it has gone on for ten years. But we are practical people who have built a comfortable life in the uk and are worried about making such a big move....I have read posts on pio and there are some people who are going to aus who have not even visited and there are those that have and what about those who are already there! So where did your idea start?

Nice  Hope your dream will come true!

My parents migrated to Australia in the 60s. They stayed for around 10 years. They had it all, but one day they came back to Europe for a holiday and remained there! However, my big brother was born there, so he is Australian.

When he was 18, he left to Australia, Melbourne to find his fortune..which he did! 12 years after he left (I was around 23), he asked me if I wished to go and work for his company in Melbourne. Of course I said YES!

That was 1996. Love at first sight, felt home, loved it and wanted to stay there! But after a year of amazing adventure in OZ I headed back home to do a degree.

After the degree I went back straight away  Spent another year working in Melbourne until I met my wife were she did not want to live in OZ back then.

After a few years married and living in Europe, we tried to move to OZ, but she did not feel settled so we went back home.

Another 6 years and now we are trying again, this time in Brissy :cute:

Wish me luck! :biglaugh:

Let the dream live forever!

Cheers

Oh great story B1K3R...we are heading to Buderim. So good to hear that you have tried and tried again. I needed to hear a story like this as hubby and I have taken so long to attempt a change of life and it is now or never for us.....

A merry crimbo to you and yours and may all your dreams continue to come true x

Within days of meeting the other half, he was saying don't get attached to me as I am going home in 6 months.... 6 years later....

He first took me to Brissy 4 years ago and I feel in love with the place, hook line and sinker. Over the past year or so Michael has been incredibly home sick ( we nearly lost his Dad last year). We started talking about moving back early last summer, went for a recce last summer and made the decision then*. Came home and started the ball rolling, and here we are 5 months later waiting for the damn visa to arrive!!

* the defining moment came for me walking along a beach on Bribie Island, I was talking to him upstairs and doing the normal "is it right" and give me a sign type convo! A few seconds later there was the most beautiful sunlight and on my ipod came my favorite hymn... I took that as quite a good sign  ( not a church goer but def believe!!)

Hi Ausdreamer.

I dare say I have said this time and time again, for those of you who know my story, I apologise.:wubclub:

It started when I was 7 years old, I often went to Norfolk with my grandparents on holiday and one day splashing about in the surf I found a Boomerang, never seen anything like it before. Now bearing in mind this was 1970 I hope you can imagine that in later years I took this as a sign. As I ran toward my nan and pop high on the dunes I asked them what it was, in reply my pop said, 'It's a Boomerang son', now put it down and dry yourself off'.

To this day that Boomerang holds pride of place on my Australia wall in the UK. I have researched and researched this particular make of Boomerang and it was ONLY made in Australia at the time, so I like to think that it found its way to a young lad on a British beach, it had IMO anyway been washed many thousands of miles to me and that was the start of my interest in Australia.

Dreaming maybe, but to me (plus the research I have done) the ONLY way it found a spotty little idiot on that Norfolk beach was that it had been 'destined' to find me.:goofy:

I won't go into how many times I have been backwards and forwards to Australia, suffice to say it gives me a total and utter feeling of 'Belonging', or 'Acceptance'. I was born a Brit and always will be, but Australia just seems to accept me far more.

Every time I get off the plane an atmosphere of peace and contentment surround me, as if I have arrived home. It is a virtual 'spiritual' experience, words really can't convey my feelings. It's not even so much the people that do it for me. It is something much deeper than that. If countries have souls then Australia's has indeed manifested itself in me.

The smells, sounds, sights all make me into a far more calm and relaxed individual. 'Something' about the country just puts me at ease, and those around me, for the most part anyway.

I truly love the UK, but Australia from the very first time I arrived (1979) accepted me and showed me that there is so much more to life than money, material wealth , etc. It fills me with a feeling of absolute acceptance.

A bit deep maybe, reading too much into a countries ability to 'calm' a person, maybe. But Australia has been my salvation, on more than one occasion and she has never turned her back on me, ever.

Cheers Tony.

Great stories peeps! :notworthy:

Well our is less dramtaic, here goes:

My sister her hubby and 2 children went to Perth 3 years ago without seeting foot in Aus on a permanent visa (we all thought she was mad!)

She begged me to visit and eventually in April of this year we decided to go and see her. I wasn't really that bothered about going to be honest, but hey hoy!

We were there for 4 weeks after getting stuck out there because of the ash cloud, our visit was only supposed to be for 2 weeks.

Basically my hubby did not want to come home and after 14 years of marrage I have never seen him so upset. I loved the place but was looking forward to getting home.

My hubby started making noises about moving out there and it was only once I got back into the UK I seemed to see things through very different eyes and it made me realise what a wonderful life my sister has there and that maybe we could do the same.

Since then all systems go, hubby has 457 visa and we leave on 23rd December! I'm coming home mid Jan to sort the house sale out and the packing etc and we are all now very exicted! :jiggy:

We visited my brother in QLD for the first time in 2005, no intention of migrating, just came for a holiday. Went home thinking "I could live in Australia". In less than a year we had our Visa and were planning a new life in WA

In 1982 sitting on a beach in Majorca on holiday and thinking its going to be another year before we can enjoy this sunshine again, we should do something about it .Realized much later, just wasnt the weather that we wanted to escape from ,but a totally different life style we had there and one we are thankfully still enjoying

Easy. Fell in love with an Aussie 10 years ago when I was in Oz backpacking but we were both in other relationships. Fast forward 7 years, both single again, got in touch again through Facebook, I went to Oz and bang, head over heels in love all over again. He moved to England but he has a house in Oz so fast forward to now and I am getting ready to move to Melbourne permanently in February. He's the love of my life and I have never been so optimistic about the future :cute:

Family friends emigrated to Adelaide in the early 90's. My brother went to see them on a 2 month holiday in the late 90s and met a girl.... he emigrated in 1999.

went went over in 2001 for the wedding, only a short holiday but certianly peaked my interest!

Came home, finished school and started a degree, took a year out of said degree in 2007/2008 and went over to get some work and visit the family.... fell in love with the place!

came home to finish the degree... With the economy the way it is I reached out to my former employer for a job this time last year and was offered a job in feb. Finished my degree in June, graduated in November and currently awaiting the completion of 457 process.

Cannot wait to get over there and start afresh :D
