Guest JasonCaroline Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Hello my name is Jason and we are looking to emigrate to Australia(partner Caroline and two kids Holly 4, Elliot 2) I have had my TRA assessment approved and recently taken an IELTS test. We spent a month in Perth earlier in the year and really liked it, we also have been looking into going to Adelaide but my only concern is finding work. I am going as a Gasfitter and I am also a qualified Plumber, after speaking to other plumbers in Perth they told me how hard it is to find work. I was just wondering if any of you have any ideas of which city would be best suited for us for finding work as a plumber/gasfitter Cheers
furkew Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Hi Jason. Welcome to PIO. I'm afraid I cant help on the WA/SA question as i'm based in Victoria myself. There are plenty of tradies out there in WA that i'm sure can give you an idea on the job situation. You might also want to post in the respective forums as well: South Australia - PomsInOz Forum Western Australia - PomsInOz Forum I'm sure you wouldnt have any trouble in Melbourne finding work, but the commute might be a bit too much each day :biglaugh:
Pumpkin Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 I am not in your trade and neither is Mr Pumpkin, but it certainly would seem to me like plumbers are required in both cities and finding work in one versus the other won't be much different? It really can't be that there are more plumbing problems in Perth than Adelaide or vice versa, although perhaps somebody will enlighten me on that. Until then, I would have thought in your case you can base your decision on your personal preference.
starlight7 Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I would also say it is personal preference. They are quite different in a lot of ways and it depends on your own interests. Perth is beautiful but isolated from the rest of Australia, Adelaide is a small city with lots of good restaurants and social netwoks. Both have good beaches.
tonyman Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:.....Defo Perh Pal ...........dont ask again...........

When i was there they were talking about a big $6 billion infrastucture for a mine starting, railway, port etc,i just type in a job search on google tbh,but i havent bothered lately, still got this hse to sell first.
friedparsley Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 I've stayed in both places, and its Perth for me any day over Adelaide. Not for nothing is Adelaide called the city of churches. I think people only work in banks or insurance companies there. There's no industry. You can leave Adelaide poorer than when you went there. Why need to be close to the rest of Australia anyway? In Perth your closer to the UK, Bali Singapore etc., and there's cheap flight within Australia from Perth.
Guest rayman1 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Reasons? Dead atmosphere. It is cheaper to live than any other city but there is a saying used by Australian; you are born in Adelaide, move out than come back to die. Imagine the UK in the early 80's; thats Adelaide. I do know people who live there ( can't live anywhere else) and people who have moved because so bored with the place.

VERY quite but if you haven't got kids and enjoy not doing much a great place to live. My friend does a lot of painting down there because has a massive pensioner population.
Guest rayman1 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 so ura has been.....? No. Visited but have numerous reports from friends who confirm it wasn't for them. But everyone to their own.

Its quiet, but few pubs, restaurants, small cinema, lovely place/views,its not like we go the opera or the ballet now!all we need tbh,and the older population might work for me if i start a small maintenance busines.
rainyc Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Oh I hope it isnt as Rayman says it is...i dont want to live in a quiet boring place!!
sutchman Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I thought there would be plenty of work in Perth for Plumbers, do you mean plumbing in commercial / household buildings? or on a larger scale ie. drainage? pipelaying / construction?
ducktape Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I've lived in adelaide I happen to think its a great place, so if you haven’t experienced it firsthand then you don’t know, regardless of the authority. It’s not true unless you see it, touch it, feel it, taste it, until it’s confirmed beyond a reasonable doubt. There’s theoretical knowledge and there’s applied knowledge. But don’t take my word for it.
