Guest Sparticus Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Hi! As we have now been given the confirmation from our c/o that we will get our visa, the research has now properly begun! I am Sparticus' wife, Lou, and have begun looking into the housing department in Brisbane. Sparticus is too busy looking at the cricket at the mo lol! I have so many questions so I hope someone can please help us:confused: We know nothing about Brisbane at all. My first concern at the moment is when we arrive in Brisbane and need to look for somewhere to rent (long-term), where can we stay?? Are there places that are rent out for short term periods that are not atrociously priced? I found some on ourbrisbane.com that were very expensive. Has anyone been through this already? What did you all do? Can you reccommend any agents that deal in this type of thing? The second thing is which Suburb? I have already read many posts regarding this but none seem to help me decide on how to narrow it down:err: ! We would like a suburb not too far from the city but also one that is self contained and has everything you need there and possibly the opportunity of employment. I really appreciate any advice at all you can give us, I've got such a headache from trying to choose an area (North, East, South, West, although for some reason im heading more towards the North) and where will we live when we get off that rather long flight and need to house hunt!:wideeyed: Thanks again, We need all the help you can offer.

I live in Brisbane and when we first arrived we lived in furnished accommodation close to the city centre but that is very expensive. Not sure what the other options are. As to where you live it really depends a lot on the area that you are going to work in, you do not want to live in the south if you are going to work in the north. All areas have some type of shopping centre, some big and some smaller. Obviously the closer to the city that you live the higher the cost of the houses. If you are going to work in the city centre it is good idea to use the train service so you need to take that into account as well and pick an area that is close to a station. Very difficult I know. If I can help with any more specific questions let me know.
calNgary Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Hiya I wouldnt worry too much about where to settle until you are here and can see places with your own eyes. Places look very different in real life than to what they do on the www. The location of your workplace may play a factor in deciding North, East, South or West, so do you know where either of you will be based? For arrival accommodation there is a choice out there, some familys go for the furnished cabins in the holiday parks or as someone as mentioned you can rent a furnished short stay house. Short stay accommodation is pricey than a normal rental as everything is provided for your use and most of your utility costs are covered in the rent. If you plan on staying somewhere for a few weeks (4 plus), make sure you ask if you can have a discount, most places will offer one on longer stays. Good luck with everything and i hope this helps for now Cal x
Guest Sparticus Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Ah thanks everyone for your help. We are not too concerned with the suburb we will live in yet, we are looking more into where we can stay whilst looking around at houses and suburbs. Mmm, it's a tricky one. CalNgary do you rent accommodation for this purpose? Thanks again everyone x
B1K3R Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 We are not too concerned with the suburb we will live in yet, we are looking more into where we can stay whilst looking around at houses and suburbs. Mmm, it's a tricky one. It's very tricky indeed. I think it's one of the most frustrating things. Short term let is very expensive and there is no way you can get a long term from abroad (unless you are ready to take a risk and be very determined and lucky) I am not sure what your budget is, but from my research the best value would be a cabin in a caravan park. As for prices, you'll be looking at something like these (averages!): 1. Motel room for 2 adults + 1 child = $135/night 2. Cabin = $525 to $600 per week minimum 2 weeks stay 3. Small flat = $600 to 700 per week 4. House = $800 to $900 per week 5. Hotel room (depends) but anything around $150 and over per night! Good luck! B!K3R
