Hi boroboy, dont worry i frequently feel like im talking to myself especially when im talking to my other half :realmad: I think that oz looks at immigrants slightly different than here as they know that the ones in oz have had to prove their worth before they are allowed a visa. Will le t u know in just over 2 weeks! Emx

Guest Abi&Dan
The fact is, in oz we'll all be immigrants - but I don't care and am in fact proud to know that we're willing to work hard for our future somewhere that (according to heresay) appreciates and supports that. 99% of immigrants leave their homes and the people they know to create a better life for themselves and their families and they cannot be disrespected because of that. In the UK if they're given too much it's hardly their fault - blame the government (I know I do ) - they do the only smart thing which is take everything they can. Besides I hear plenty of people on here asking what Oz state benefits they may be entitled to - and more power - it's all about getting the best you can out of life and if they're willing to give then take (and be prepared to give back too). Good luck to us all :wubclub:

I know for a fact that as we are going on a 457 we get nothing in OZ and even though we are UK residents we get nothing from UK. So we get nothing from know where, we have to maintain ourselves. That doesnt bother me Im a worker and so is my OH so we will be ok. Good Luck everyone. Em x
Guest Working to fish
Thank you Abi&Dan Thats the reply ive been waiting for. As i wouldn't want to see an Australian panorama programme portraying us as immigrants, as after spending hours and hours to earn the money to pay for my very expensive visas i feel i deserve not to be portrayed as an immigrant. Does anybody know what i mean? Im in no way racist.

Does anybody know what i mean? Im in no way racist. I know what you mean - the English language is a beaut but one of the problems is the changing status of words means connotations change all the time - immigrant has become a negative thing despite it simply meaning a person who chooses to settle permanently in a country not of their birth. I think we should nick it back for positive things. You know it's an Americanism and just think what a dull place America would be without it's fantastic multlicultural society (in carefully chosen areas ) - I reckon Oz also has that going on because, like the US, it is essentially a country of immigrants (unless you count the indigenous peoples :wideeyed:) - can't wait to join them. And don't think you have to worry about the Oz Panorama - we're unlikely to ever be in that position because, despite their faults, the Oz government is not a group of slack jawed idiots who couldn't think for themselves if our lives depended on it and (sadly) wont throw money at our feet as we trudge through the customs at Sydney airport ;-) like our lot do at Heathrow. Guest THE JONEZYS
Well, from personal experience, most Ausies are totally amazed and in awe of the fact, that you have sold up and shipped out your life to come and live in their country. They seem to think that we are all very brave but also a little bit mad..........which is probabley true...........But as yet, we haven't encountered anything negative. The only incident so far happened to my son in a night club when some Aussie accused him of making out to be English with a cockney accent just to make the girls fancy him lol :wacko:!!! In the 7 years I've been here we have always being very accepted, apart from 2 instances where it was a drunken argument and some anti pom stuff came up. I just said "But I had to go through a selection process and was chosen to live here - you were just born here" Not a put down I'd use often but it shut them up. I think that as long as you accept this place and be respectful to the natives - no prob. We do fit i here and blend well,we also do not put pressure on the social security system. I did feel weird when I went back to the UK last year as I went on my Aussie passport (yep I am a citizen now).
Guest OldiesRUs
The difference between us emigrting to Aus and the people who come here is that we have to go through a very long, very thorough, very expensive process to be accepted. The CPV that we are applying for is costing us around $30,000 each, then on top of that we have to have an AOS who also have to lodge a total of $14,000 and after paying all that money, we cannot claim anything (other than medicare) for TEN YEARS. The other thing is that we go out there determined to adopt the Aussie lifestyle, culture etc. We do not choose to live in another country whilst refusing to accept their way of life but continue living our own culture, which is what an awful lot of people who come here do. A large number don't even bother to learn our language, apart from the word 'benefits'! We also won't be offended to see the Aussie flag flying. I think 20 years ago, when we went out there for the first time, there was quite a lot of anti Pom feelings, but we have certainly noticed a change in attitude over the last 10 years. Bobcat
hi boroboy welcome.as far as i could see in oz aslong as long as your prepared to work and get on /your viewed as an asset not a sgrounger or immigrant . If you are prepared to muck in and work here.......... you have cracked it. Bludger is a term the Aussies use a lot............ I'm sure none of you coming from the UK are bludgers because over there we were brought up with the right work ethic. You will probably find work somewhat different to what you are used too. You'll just have to learn to get used to the new work practices; accept them ......... and whatever you do don't keep on harping about.......... "Well over in the UK..... we do it differently!" Trust me........ the Aussies hate being told that.
