Hi Tracy123,

Had a look on the V/Line as you suggested, great site and as it gives you traintimes you can work out what train gets you in before 9am.

It doesn't seem to cover all areas though, such as 'Box Hill', is there another service provider that goes out East, or have I missed something?

Thanks,

John

We are looking at moving to Melbourne in early September and will probably rent somewhere close to CBD for the first 6 months and then find a house to buy. We have been looking at houses in the Western Suburbs as they seem to be of the best value, specially Williams Landing and Truganina. Is there any of you that have any experience of these areas? We have heard that there is some smell of the Water/sewage treatment Plant outside Laverton.

We are looking forward to meeting up with you all when we finally make the move - trying to save up money know. Hopefully it won't be too hard to get jobs. I am a bank cashier and Andy is a automotive engineer. Any feedback on how you found work will be great.

Take care!!

You mention the train services from Box Hill, that is in the east, so most people have talked about the West which the thread is about, but if you are interested in the eastern region, and looking for somewhere with a more rural feel then you could think about Eltham, it's on the train line, 40 mins or so into city and good facilities around, Westfield Shoppingtown in Greensborough and good schools within reach too, and also not far to access Universities. You'd have to go for a drive around the different regions to get a feel for them I guess, from East to West is a bit of a hike, and which ever freeway you get on it is usually a peak hour jam in the morning if you drive.

Hello,

We, hubby Steve and I, live in the Western Suburbs!! and we love it. We are in Deer Park at the moment but intend to move a bit further out in a year or two.

We have two grown up children, a son of 25 who has also moved over and lives in Essendon/Niddrie and a daughter of 21 who is still at Uni in the UK.

I work in Childcare as an Assistant Coordinator for a Family Day Care scheme (similar to childminding where people look after children in their own home) so I am happy to try and answer any questions anyone may have but I know nothing about schools.

I do know that childcare places are very scarce in and around Point Cook, very high demand. So if anyone is interested in setting up as a Family Day Care Educator, let me know:wink:

Very interested in meeting up, just let us know the time and place.

Hi!

My husband and I moved to Manor Lakes about 6/7 weeks ago. We were staying with some Aussie friends who live in Wyndhan Vale for 3 weeks before we found our current house that we are renting.

We were faced with the fact that we had looked at so many areas including Tarneit and Truganina before comming here as potential settling areas, but our friends either advised us against them or we decided that we were too far away and didn't want to isolate ourselves as we didn't know anyone apart from our 2 friends and their family.

Manor Lakes is nice, and we are pretty close to everything, including Coles and there is a good medical centre and a pharmacy. The Werribee Plaza is about 15 mins drive, and there are lots of shops at Hoppers Crossing including Target and Spotlight.

We were looking forward to a 'community spirit' that we expected, and had heard about, expecting to make good friends with our neighbours and be invited to loads of BBQ's!

Well the truth is that we don't even know who our neighbours are, and we have met a couple (through PIO) who have also introduced us to a couple that they know...and apart from that we still don't know anyone!

Due to bad luck and a long story we both have not been able to start work yet, so we do feel quite isolated still! As much as it is lovely to be spending a lot of time together, and seeing different places, and making the most of things whilst we aren't working, it does get a bit boring and we are wanting to make some more friends.

From what I have read on here, there seems to be a Point Cook commmunity with people meeting regularly. It would be lovely if there could be something arranged for people in Werribee, Wyndham Vale areas. My husband and I would definately be there.

I think a good place to meet would be Werribee Plaza. There is a lovely lttle cafe in the centre, called Cherry or Cherries I think. The only other cafe I know is the one at Manor Lakes, but it is quite small so if a few people were going, it might get cramped.

My husband - Lee, love this area but as we have only got the rental for a year are just going to see how it goes, and then in a years time may possibly move if we don't like it, or simply when we know more and feel more settled and a bit more clued up on other areas etc!

Hi guys,

We are currently looking at property in Hoppers Crossing as that is where husbands job is. We are planning to be there this week fingers crossed and would love to meet up at the Werribee Plaza with you. We are currently over the otherside of the city at the moment staying with cousins in Ferntree Gully. Husband is supposed to be starting work on 18th providing we are over in Hoppers.

We recently arrived from Wales on Jan 4th and are looking forward to our new life.

Look forward to hearing from you x

How close to point cook do you want to be? Would a place like Derrimut, or Laverton or Sunshine be too far away for you?

Hi all, i myself was looking forward to all these bbq's outings's etc i was thinking i would be invited to yet i too don;t know my neighbours, iv tried to make friends my kids have started school yet no friends in oz as of yet, very disheartening for a mother of 3 who does like woman conversation from now to then. My phone bill is sky high to ring back home for my natters. May be something of the fact i look young with kids i am 26 and continue to produce id on a regular basis. Maybe point cook is not for me.

Guest Mrs Wrigles

hi there, sorry to hear you have had a bit of a struggle with friends etc. The first thing that jumps out at me is that you should get yourself sorted with Skype as should your family and friends back home that way your calls are for free!! I am surprised that you havn't met more expats as there are a lot of Poms in Point Cook.

I am lucky that my hubby is an aussie and he has family out there so we are not starting from scratch but I know how important is is going to be for me to keep in touch with family and friends.

I am moving out there on 3rd Feb (cant wait!! - Hubby been there since 1st Jan so missing him loads!!) so would be great to meet up and grab a coffee.

How old are your children? I have 3 as well (10, 4 and 3) so eldest 2 will be in school but my youngest will not start school for another year so hoping to get him a place in kindy.

Keep your chin up - I am sure you will make friends soon!!

Hopefully see you soon

Myself and OH have been living in Seaholme, 5 mins down the beach from Altona, for 3 months now and love it. We arrived in May 2010, had 4 weeks in Monbulk (lovely rental), then did 5 months in Frankston (which was ok but wouldn't live there again!) and have just signed up for another 12 months in our rental. We are 2 mins from the train station - I work in the City for a law firm as a Legal Assistant and my OH is a sparky. We love the West, the beaches are fantastic and not overly busy, the Great Ocean Road is not far away which is fantastic. The beach is 5 min walk and so the nearest pub (well Sports Club) suits us just fine. I notice that the West doesn't get as much attention on here as the East  and I don't get why as I think its a great place to live. Also, we have lovely neighbours, we don't live in each others pockets but have been invited round a few times now for BBQ's which has been nice but its our turn next!!

We would love to meet up with other Poms, there are a few round at the Sports Club but they are much older than us! No offence but they are of retirement age and we are young(ish). 29 and 39.

PS Mrs Wrigles I note you are from Blackburn, Lancs! We are originally from Darwen (hope that doesn't put you off!!).

Ah its not point cook its a great place maybe its me i can be very shy, Im Irish so your whole social life back home consisted of the pub so after a few drinks everyone was your friend false courage and all maybe i just need to stop been so reserved and put myself out there which can be hard when i can hardly string an adult conversation together anymore i have mammy brain as of late. My kids are 7,4 and 2 so all young the oldest two are in school as of next week so that will give me some free time can;t say i am not looking forward to that even with the youngest been in the terrible twos, I hope your trips go well my trip was a nightmare with three kids and prams lost in heathrow and luggage lost by the time we reached sydney i christened every airport i landed in with tears very stressful without all that but when i walked out of sydney airport it was like a breath of fresh air i didn;t care that all we had was our pack back. Sorry don;t mean to scare you with loss of possessions. I agree with altona beach been a lovelly beach and not been crowded i love going over with the kids without fear of them been lost in the midst of people. I have skype but broadband connections in my small town aren;t great and can be quiet slow for skype so i think there working on that there end fingers crossed. I would love to meet up when you;s get here sounds like a plan. Maybe when my little boy starts prep there is other mothers there starting out too looking for coffee dates heres hoping.

Hi Cath, only just read your comment on this post about being from Darwen!!! Although I'm not originally from Blackburn we have lived here about 5 years. Can't say I will miss it but then again never say never - it will be the people not the place I dare say.

Altona will be our 'local' beach I think so maybe see you around there?

Would be great to get a few of us together - once I have arrived and get internet sorted maybe we should make a conscious effort to get a date in the diaries and meet up.

Take care - will be there soon - arrive saturday 5th Feb :jiggy::biggrin:

Hi there - Ive hijacked my hubby's profile (so this is Tracy and not Geoffrey - confusing I know with the profile name lol) We are in Tarneit so we arent too far from you and have 3 children also - 10, 5 and 4, and opposite to you in that i am english and Geoff is the aussie!!

Would love to meet up and make some friends as haven't had chance yet (only been here 3 weeks and so my feet haven't quite touched the floor yet as we have been busy doing all the stuff that you need to do when you first arrive). Let us know when is good for you - send me a PM and we can try and get something arranged

Look forward to hearing from you
