Please tell us who you are, where you are, and what it’s like, any tips? Remember what it was like trying to do research on an area, this thread could be a goldmine for new comers. If your thinking about the Western suburbs please join the thread, this should be the place to ask questions about the place. If you have a trade or service let us know. Lets start up a meet up for the area, I know at 1 point there was a drinks night, if it’s still going are new members welcome? We have some nice beaches and parks lets get some family days going.... PIO is a community web site lets turn the Western Suburbs into a community where new migrants feel welcome, who knows we just might make some life long friends along the way. Not sure where to look (three monsters 14,12,6) any help, suggestions would be great and, someone to meet for a coffee, drink, fodder etc when we know what direction to turn in! sounds great too. chickibabes Posted December 17, 2010 Share Posted December 17, 2010 Hi! My husband and I moved to Manor Lakes about 6/7 weeks ago. We were staying with some Aussie friends who live in Wyndhan Vale for 3 weeks before we found our current house that we are renting. We were faced with the fact that we had looked at so many areas including Tarneit and Truganina before comming here as potential settling areas, but our friends either advised us against them or we decided that we were too far away and didn't want to isolate ourselves as we didn't know anyone apart from our 2 friends and their family. Manor Lakes is nice, and we are pretty close to everything, including Coles and there is a good medical centre and a pharmacy. The Werribee Plaza is about 15 mins drive, and there are lots of shops at Hoppers Crossing including Target and Spotlight. We were looking forward to a 'community spirit' that we expected, and had heard about, expecting to make good friends with our neighbours and be invited to loads of BBQ's! Well the truth is that we don't even know who our neighbours are, and we have met a couple (through PIO) who have also introduced us to a couple that they know...and apart from that we still don't know anyone! Due to bad luck and a long story we both have not been able to start work yet, so we do feel quite isolated still! As much as it is lovely to be spending a lot of time together, and seeing different places, and making the most of things whilst we aren't working, it does get a bit boring and we are wanting to make some more friends. From what I have read on here, there seems to be a Point Cook commmunity with people meeting regularly. It would be lovely if there could be something arranged for people in Werribee, Wyndham Vale areas. My husband and I would definately be there. I think a good place to meet would be Werribee Plaza. There is a lovely lttle cafe in the centre, called Cherry or Cherries I think. The only other cafe I know is the one at Manor Lakes, but it is quite small so if a few people were going, it might get cramped. My husband - Lee, love this area but as we have only got the rental for a year are just going to see how it goes, and then in a years time may possibly move if we don't like it, or simply when we know more and feel more settled and a bit more clued up on other areas etc! The 4 yr old is only entitled to 12 hours (I think) free child care a week The best thing to do is ring them direct, rather than send e-mails.... Have you tried Kids Resort in Sanctuary Lakes, or ABC Childcare (big Australia wide one) or Sanctuary Lakes Day care centre (not in SL but close by) or Giant Leaps in Point Cook Centre... There are prob about 6/7 different ones in point cook.! For schools, then it depends where you live as to the zoned school you are allowed to go to.! Stella Maris (catholic) is a great school and so is point cook primary and seabrook Good luck with things. Are you having a big family get together at Christmas seeing as it is your last one before you come here? Next year will be totally different as I am struggling to get my head round the fact that it is Christmas in less than a week now, yet it is hot and doesn't feel like a normal December! It's very strange! In answer to your question, my husband is a plumber but cant work at the moment as he had to have an operation here on his shoulder which means he now has a plate in it which he has to have removed at the end of January! After that though he should be back to normal and go straight back to work. What will you and your husband be doing when you get here? At the moment I am not working either and I hate to say this but I can't wait to start working! Will be nice to get into a routine and start meeting some people! Have you seen any areas here where you are thinking of settling and are you going to rent when you get here? Well I hope you have a lovely Christmas that isn't too cold(!) and a wonderful new year and perhaps we can meet up when you get here! Petals Posted December 19, 2010 Share Posted December 19, 2010 Neighbours tend not to be friendly in Aus. Of course some are but I would say they are in the minority. I know my neighbours both sides but we do not socialise at all. I could call on them and they me but we have our own lives. Being at home in the day is a lonely place for new people especially in the newer areas which tend to be isolated and lack public transport etc. This is because most people both work and therefore no-one is around. I know if I go for a walk around Somerville in the day I will pass may be one or two people in the residential area. It is all about making a community and this thread is a very good idea for those of you who are settling in the Western Suburbs. People moving to the Peninsula seem to be able to meet more Brits and of course people want to meet the locals but its only by meeting other migrants first, then expand the circle. We've spent days on the internet but there's no substitute for recommendations. We're a family of 4, I'm an IT project Manager so likely to be working in the CBD, my wife is a Diabetes Educator so likely to be working from one of the Universities, my daughter will be going to a college and my son is 15 so will need to go to a high school. I'd like to be within an hours travel of work and would like to be somewhere semi-rural where we're near shops etc, but not in an estate where you're overlooked be everyone. Any recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, John. P.S. We're coming out in Feb for a rece for a couple of weeks and to attend interviews, then hopefully back within a couple of months for good so if you're planning a get together late Feb or April/May, drop us a line. Hi mate I'd be looking at the v/line network (country train line) places like Gisbourne are a fair way out but by train you're looking at just over 30 minutes to get into the cbd, it has some great high schools and a country feel but your not to far away. the v/line web site gives you times on journey times, any other info just ask Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
