When we broke our lease we had to pay the costs for advertising and a percentage of the bond pro rata for the remaining time once someone had taken over the lease. It took 10 weeks to find someone to take over it but I think our agents were just not that helpful. We were happy to sign over the bond as payment for the weeks remaining but had a long fight on our hands to get it back when they owed us money.

You could of course just pack up and leave and post the keys through the door if your conscience will allow that, mine wouldn't!

It is best to be upfront with them, I think you can appeal as well to break the lease if you can prove hardship, I may be wrong, speak to the agent you never know they may just have someone wanting a place like yours.

regards

Michelle

Hi Annemarie,

PLEASE, before you speak to the agent contact the Residential Residencies authority, for advice on how to break the lease and what you should be charged for.

RTA: Achieving fair rental outcomes in Queensland

Remember they are not your agents they are the landlords agents. they may be nice people, but their job is to get as much money as possible for the landlord. Speak to the RTA first, their advice saved me money.

Hi Annemarie,

Just wanted to wish you all the very best, we fly out December 2nd back to our home Canada, we lasted 2 years in Oz, but it looks like our move back is really meant to be as everything has fallen into place just nicely.

Looking forward to earning more money back home and a lower cost of living.... now can't wait... only 9 more sleeps lol

Cheers
