Temporary Resident to Permanent Residency

Hi,

Hope someone can help. We are hoping to emigrate on a Sponsored Regional Visa subclass 496 which means we are Temporary Residents. My hubby works in the Criminal Justice field. He is not allowed to look for work with any Government agencies until we have Permanent Residency.

I have been checking up with Careers Agencies online and they all seem to require you to be a Permanent Resident before you can apply for them.

Is there any way we can speed up the process of getting Permanent Residency as it looks like he might not be able to get a job!!! :wideeyed: (He is willing to look in other areas of work, he is Programme Manager at the moment but not IT). Now worried :nah: Hope one of the very kind Migration Agents/Employment Agency people can give some advice on how likely he is to be able to get a job!

Thanks folks

The permanent residency visa pathway for 496 visaholders after 01/09/2007 will be via the subclass number 887 visa (which replaces the 883 visa pathway).

As discussed in the factsheet here: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/changes/_pdf/GSMchange_options.pdf

you will be required to have lived in a designated area of Australia for at least 2 years and to have worked there for 12 months before you can apply for the 887 visa.

Best regards.

Hi guys,

You probably already know this but ... when you get PR in Australia you can work as anything, there are lots of jobs over here and if you're willing to work, there's something for you whether it's in your preferred occupation or otherwise.

Do you have a close relative living in a designated area? If not, you can't get a 496 visa.

What's your husband's qualifications? What exactly has he been working as? This is all relevant to whether he's going to be successful for independent skilled migration or for that matter sponsorship because he has to nominate an occupation on the skilled occupation list and have experience.

There's other options such as 457's depending on his qualifications and skills and also employer nominated permanent residence.

Regards,

Kim

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. We are being sponsored by OH's family member in Melbourne so we will be staying there for at least the first 2 years, however I spent some of my childhood there (although long time ago - not long enough to go for Resident Return visa unfortunately!). We looked at all visa types but didn't have quite enough points for 136 permanent residency straight off so had to go this route. However, good news is OH has sent off CV to friend in Sydney who is optimistic about getting work when we get here!

Now have to wait, although recent enquiry to Adelaide said that our meds and police checks had been "lost" even though we had sent them ages ago. Hopefully we will be hearing something soon! But the waiting seems to go on ... and on ...:arghh:
