Lazy Cow
Hi Maria, They seem to use a combination of integration and special units. Obviously it depends on the form your son's autism takes, his age etc but perhaps this list of special schools will help. Even with the little I know, I can see that this is neither exhaustive or fully up to date, but perhaps it'll do as a starting point and at least you can visit their websites. IMHO provision here seems pretty good. Let me know if I can help. LC

realitynotincluded
hi... I've just come back from Perth and l am fortunate enough to have family out there who are linked to teaching....anyway to cut a long story short...... l was looking into special needs as l am a senco here in the uk....... l did find out that children that are special needs here do not automatically get to transfer their paper work to aussie schools and will have to go through an assessment to see what level of special needs they are in aussie terms as the aussies use the same principles as america apparently, so their special needs criteria are different to ours... hope this is of some help and maybe contacting aussie education for WA directly will be of benefit... Guest roantreemj
hi we have a son with aspergers syndrome and are also looking at moving to adelaide. We have been told by someone who is a teacher out there to make sure we take as much info and as many reports as poss,,ie, sen statement and in particular get an up to date prognosis from the educational pstchologist that he attends,we are also looking at providing detailed reports from his school ,anything to help us along so that he is not waiting to be assesed when we get there.we have been particularly pleased with the reports of golden grove high, and banksea park high, both of which are mainstream,i am under the impression though that they dont give one to one support in class however i have not had this confirmed,,still investigating

Any feedback would be useful to us and appreciated kind regards maria Before you commit yourself to a course of action, seek a professional assessment about whether your son is likely to satisfy the applicable public interest (health) criteria. If one dependant fails the health criteria applicable to the visa class, then all applicants will be refused visas at the final stage of visa application processing. We are in the UK with 15 hours one on one a week which is great but we are missing Australia. There dosen't seem to be as much support in Australia for mainstreaming special needs kids. Queensland does have SEUs, some of which are very good. SEUs, special education units outside of mainstream classrooms which are attatched to many schools. Hopefully someone can provide you with some positive news on this area. wildbiz

Guest Jacky L
Before you commit yourself to a course of action, seek a professional assessment about whether your son is likely to satisfy the applicable public interest (health) criteria. If one dependant fails the health criteria applicable to the visa class, then all applicants will be refused visas at the final stage of visa application processing. Having come across this thread, would you be able to deal with a professional assessment for the health criteria?? Our son is 6 next month, has a speech and language disorder and learning difficulties although has not been diagnosed with being on the autistic spectrum. We lodged our 175 visa Sept 08 so a C.O is imminent (hopefully) therefore we will be looking to book medicals soon. Look forward to your reply. Guest Chrissie59
Hi Jacky I've emailed a couple of professionals for advice to see if it's worth progressing with any application. At the moment I don't feel hopeful. I haven't heard back as yet. I would seek an assessment if this would tell us either way. How positive do you feel? Best wishes Chrissie

Lazy Cow
Hi, I am in no way an expert but perhaps Autism SA can help. I work as an SSO (School Support Officer) helping kids with ASDs in class. The support they receive is partly due to the hours they receive finance for - and partly down to the needs of the individual. I know of kids that receive relatively little funding but who are given a lot of in-class help just because they need it. I have found the level of care to be focussed, positive and empathetic. Whilst I have not met any ASD kid that has been offered one-to-one help on a full-time basis in any of the schools* I have worked in, in each I was proud to be part of a school environment where, with specialist help, the kids can thrive. Good luck with your applications. LC *Don't get too impressed...I've only worked in three, but for a few terms/year in each. And no, Golden Grove wasn't one of them!
