Guest Sheila
and would like to introduce ourselves. I'm Sheila(40), my husband is Pete(45) and we have five kids..Steven(20), Anthony(16), Chelsey(13), Joseph(11) and Charlotte(6) and not forgeting Cal(8) our lovely long haired shepherd, we also have 2 beautiful cats (Deal & No Deal)and for now..5 cute kittens. Moving to Australia has been something we've talked about for years but never did anything about it, unfortunately. My husband Pete is a bricklayer and has ran his own small company for the past 12 years. We moved to France last year with 4 of our kids(the eldest had a girlfriend and a little boy and wanted to stay with them). We moved here because Pete has been buying land and building houses(easier and cheeper than in the uk). The thing is....now that we've actually made the break from the uk, we realise we should go for our original dream..Australia. The kids are all up for it. They realise that if they can make lots of new friends who don't speak the same language, it'll be a lot easier making friends who can, plus our kids are very active and sporty and get on well with almost everyone. The only hurdle we seem to have is the fact that Pete is 45 and so we need him to firstly get his trade recognised(which should hopefully be easy..ish!!) then find a sponsor who will give him a job. Here's where this lovely Forum comes in....could anyone tell us how easy or difficult it is to find an employer when you're a 45..almost 46yr old bricklayer? Also..where's the best place to look? We've been looking on seek.com.au and there seems to be a good selection of jobs which Pete would be qualified for but of course he can't even try for them yet because he needs a positive TRA first...doesn't he?? I'm a qualified Teaching Assistant but haven't worked for the past 6 years as I stayed at home to look after our grandaughter(now daughter) Charlotte when our daughter died. I would love to go back into the classroom and so I have actually looked at colleges etc in Oz because that is another option for us if all else fails. Although we do realise this puts a lot of restrictions on work options for Pete and myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and we would love to hear from anyone who has been in the same predicament as us. Oh...forgot to add..we will probably be moving back to the uk, just until we have the Australia stuff sorted because it seems as though things are a lot less complicated if you're living in the uk when you apply for visas etc. Would like to know others opinions on this too. Thanks. Sheila & Pete

calNgary
Hiya and welcome to poms ,,your dog must be beautiful ,,we share the same name!!!!lol, in your position i personally would seek some advice from an agent,we used Visa Bureau as our visa application wasnt straight forward either, and they were fantastic, cannot falut them in anyway, like you we lived out of the uk for a little while so our kids had a similar opinion to yours ,that surely its easy speaking the same language, and they were right ,its fantastic over here ,everyone has been so helpful and friendly, kids have settled really quickly,,Good luck with your quest ,sounds like you deserve the best and i hope your dreams come true.. Guest Rachel83
Hi Sheila to you and your family, and welcome to PIO!! :wubclub: Well I'm glad you've decided to finally follow your dream and come to Australia and it's great that your kids are all so enthusiastic about it too. I personally can't help with any of your questions from this post, but I'm sure there will be plenty of people on here with some helpful advice for you. If you look in the 'Welcome' forum you will find a thread called 'Looking for work in Australia?'. This was originally posted by Katt who works for a migration agency based in QLD, they specialise in finding the right company to sponsor prospective migrants. It depends on where about in Australia you were planning to move to, if QLD then you might get a lot of help there, or if not at least it may be a good start for you. Take a look at the thread anyway, hope it helps! I hope everything goes well for you and your family, and any problems or questions you might have just remember the PIO guys, everyone here is so friendly! All the best Rachel
