Box Size?

Recommended Posts

This is a really random question, but i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the average size of the boxes used by shippers is? Trying to work out how many boxes we might have!

thanks in advance

The company we are using have dropped some off for me to make a start, they measure 21" high by 18" wide, standard box size I guess. The do also have different sized ones for different things like clothes too.

My husband, myself and adult son are returning permanently to live in Melbourne at the end of November. I have done this "packing up the home" malarkey twice already. However this time it is more difficult as my husband has had a major stroke and is unable to contribute to the arrangements. When we returned to the UK in 1990 (main reason to travel around Europe for a few years!) we packed a full container ourselves. When it arrived in the UK the customs mob had been in it and it was horrific. They had gone through it all and then they had thrown our belongings had been thrown back in to the container any old way and some of our furniture was badly damaged etc. I have been told that unless you pay for the company who is shipping your belongings to pack everything for you, it can't be insured. Also, it is more likely that the customs will open up your container and have a rummage through it . I couldn't face that upset again. Is this information true? This company is actually supplying you with boxes to pack yourself. Are you able to insure against breakages and will it say on your documents that owner has packed the boxes? I look forward to any help with this. New to this forum so be patient with me!!!

Thanks for sharing this as we were thinking of DIY shipping but I think after reading your post I think we will leave it to the professionals!

I said they were dropping off "some" boxes for me to make a start. I am not doing any of the packing, I just have stuff that needs to go in boxes ready. They are not sealed as the packers will need to check what's in the boxes so they can check off items on their inventory and pack them properly. I am paying them a hell of a lot of money to do this, there's no way I'm going to pack my own house up when I'm paying them to do it.

We are also organising our own insurance as it's so much cheaper.

Hi the shipping company you use will give you some boxes for you to pack yourself, i.e.. books dvd's cd's kids toys, but they will ask you to leave them open so that they can check what's inside, as they have to do a inventory, they will advise this as the insurance is only valid if they do the final sealing of the box, with their labels placed on them stating roughly whats inside!

Most of them do a door to door service if required, the only extra costs on top are insurance, fumigation (if required) and quarantine the other end when your goods are delivered.
