Guest maddy
:jiggy:Hi everyone I am new to this but very impressed how kind and helpful everyone is. My daughter and soon to be son-in-law are very seriously thinking about emigrating to Australia in about 2 years time. I am very sad about this as I will miss her so much. The problem is I have another daughter who is adamant that she is staying in England which makes it difficult for me just to go out there myself permanently. So I am wondering about maybe doing 6 mths in Australia 6 mths in England. How do you think that would work and what sort of visa should I apply for if I was to do that. I am 53 years old and still working. Is there anyone out there who has been in a similar situation?
Guest Abi&Dan
can't help specifically (though you should check out Department of Immigration and Citizenship as that has all the visa options available) Just to say best of luck that you find some way to do that x

Guest OldiesRUs
Hi Maddy Awful isn't it? My boy went out there 10 years ago, tagging along Aussie girl, supposedly for a year! Swore to his sobbing mother that he would be back after the year. Yeah right! And since he had a son, it is even worse. We also have another son who is still in the UK, so although we would have moved over there about 8 years ago, I wouldn't make the move as I didn't want youngest to think I was choosing eldest over him, not that he probably would as he knows how much we have always wanted to go to Aus, but I couldn't take the risk. So, we have had to make do with travelling over once or twice every year (fortunately youngest boy works for British Airways (bless him). Happily, our youngest son and his girl are now planning on going over next year, hence our application. Not sure what the visa situation for you would be, obviously you could go on a visitor visa for a good length of time, but should you consider how you would live out there as you would not be able to work? I am sure that as much as your daughter loves you, she and new hubby wouldn't really want you living with them for 6 months - would they? Sorry for rambling and still not answering your question, just wanted to let you know there is another mother out there pining for her child. We're a family in a similar position in that my younger sister moved to Oz about 26 years ago. Mum & Dad (and I) used to visit her periodically and vice versa. Then Dad died. Not long afterwards my sister had her first (of 2) boys. I don't have any children, being career-minded. Mum dotes on her grandcubs and as she is now 86, she wants to be with them as much as possible. There is a visa called a Contributory Parent visa and Mum now hsa one of these, granted last year. You haven't mentioned whether you have any grandcubs as yet? Would it tip the emotional scales if you had? As far as visas are concerned, DIAC (the Australian Govt of Immi) is quite happy for someone to spend 6 months in Oz and 6 months in the UK every year, BUT it frowns on the idea of people using long-stay visitor visas for this purpose. Iin your own case, if your two daughters are your only children and you are single, you would become eligible for Parent Migration from what you have said. The place to start with that possiblity is here: Family - Visas & Immigration and Parent Migration Booklet Parents, however, do not become eligible for Parent or Contributory Parent visas immediately. The child usually has to have been living in Ox for around two years and must have Permanent Residence or Australian Citizenship. In the interim, DIAC in London would be likely to be OK about a couple of 6 month tourist visas as long as you explain with the second and any subsequent ones that you intend to apply for a Parent or CP visa as soon as you can. Please see here: Tourist Visa (Subclass 676) It is a lot cheaper to get a 6 month visa before you leave for Oz rather than trying to extend a 90 day ETA visa once you are out in Australia. I think if I say any more at this stage it will merely confuse you. If you have questions (which we all have) sing them out and we'll all do whatever we can to help. There are also some Registered Migration Agents who contribute regularly to this site. Cheers Gill
