Thanks for the idea Connie

Here's a few to get things started

  1. Hog's Breath (Cafe)-not something likely to stimulate your appetite
  2. Athletes Foot-yes that's a disease, why not change it to 'Club Foot', or go the whole hog and call it 'Gangrene'
  3. Clymax (natural product to help a woman's libido-I've got a better idea, leave australia)
  4. Footy (short for football) meaning any game predominantly played with the hands
  5. Soccer (football! cor, dear)
  6. The socceroos. that must have taken a nano second to think up, here's a better one: 'the Joeys'
  7. The Matilda's -Aussie female soccer team (to me conjures up images of old dears in dungarees holding pitchforks)
  8. the Wallabies (I would have even thought that 'the echidnas' would be more threatening, at least they've got spikes)

I'm getting tired..more later

'fraid you can't blame the aussies for Athletes Foot stores, they are an American company, and a very successful one at that.

You may as well give cherries to a pig as advice to a fool.

How about Hey ,Hey it's Saturday.

A TV show shown on Wednesdays.

Mike

Thanks Mike

yes and what a good show it was!

so good that most Aussies have fond memories of it

especially Red Faces, with the wonderful Red Symons (actually a pom) from the wonderful aussie band Skyhooks

That cracks me up..Hey hey it's Saturday but it's aired on a wednesday.

What about...

Durex -here it's a sticky tape and at home it's a condom

No more pain-you guessed it,it's for pain relief

Piss-otherwise known as beer

Pokies-which rarely have anything to do with poker anymore

Skivvies-explain that one

Rashie-I suppose it does help prevent a rash

Snags-a bit like calling them bangers I guess

And last but not least ...the obsession with calling everything Aussie[just look in phone book under A if you don't believe me!] and if not named Aussie ???? then it's claimed to be world leading or the best/biggest in the world.

Dunny - outside toilet!!

Thongs - at home they are flipflops and a thong is a very small pair of knickers

Lollies - here its all sweets, at home a sweet is a sweet and a lolly is a lolly

last but not least

Australia's Got Talent.....ahem more like Australia's Got No Talent, have you seen it, that little annoying boy with ginger hair who raps and likes to be called ShortyD - the panel think he's world class......yeh right!

When we first arrived, my daughter's school uniform list included 'cottontails'. I thought they were rabbits but it seems that here they're knickers! And, yes, she also had to have 'skivvies'.

One that really annoys me is 'rego'. Now this is fine in general conversation but they call it this on the national news FFS !

similar to the rego is reno (renovation)

when we first arrived we bought 2 cars which were Renaults (2 fingers to ford/holden)

a colleaguie at work asked me how the reno's were going and I said really good actually, and the conversation after that was very confusing
