Hi apples. Good luck to you too. I hope in July this occupation is on the new SOL and you can start your journey properly.

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum which I have been reading with increasing interest. I highly value the many qualified and often spot on comments from fellow members, migration agents, and of course, gollywobbler, aka Jill.

I'm an International student myself and just about to finish my Diploma in Community Welfare Work. I intend to apply for a Skilled Graduate Visa upon completion of my course. I have always been a good student and would love to work in my chosen profession as a Welfare Worker.....

My guess is as good as anyone's as to whether my profession will be on the new SOL list. I've heards rumours that it won't and I've notived that the AIWCW has announced the launch of a whole new website....I wonder why that is.

Anyway, I might have a little update as on why the new SOL was not released on 30 April 2010. I hope no one else has posted this before.

Here's the following link:

Skills Australia has today made its recommendations to DIAC in relation to the new Skilled Occupations List (SOL)

So, Skills Australia only made its recommendation to DIAC in relation to the new SOL list last Friday! Hence, the delay if this is true.

Cheers,

Kiraloo

Hi Kiraloo

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Your link to Acacia Immigration interests me because that agency is run by Mark Webster. He is very bright and he is also now a Big Wheel in the MIA (the Migration Institute of Australia.)

I wonder whether he heard Skills Australia correctly, though? Nigelinoz from this forum rang Skills Australia last Friday (30th April 2010.) My impression was that they were as perplexed as everyone else is by the ongoing and deadline=free delay (suddenly) with the new SOL.

Also, I heard a rumour some weeks ago that Skills Australia sent the new, draft SOL to the Minister sometime in March 2010?

Puzzled

Gill

Hi KK

Does your agent know this as hard fact? If so, where did the hard fact come from, please?

Or is your agent merely "just guessing," I wonder?

One rumour has it that Skills Australia failed to deliver the new draft Sol until 30th April 2010.

Skills Australia has today made its recommendations to DIAC in relation to the new Skilled Occupations List (SOL)

Mark Webster owns Acacia Immigration. I am not inclined to ignore what he says. If he says that the whole thing is running seriously behind schedule, I wonder whether the Minister is likely to make any time to deal with the draft quickly?

Cheers

Gill

Hello Gollywobbler,

I as a client get weekly newsletter and major announcements from my agent as all other clients. I received a similar newsletter stating that. I do not know the reference to it. I will ask my agent and let you know accordingly.

Thanks

Hello Watterkitty,

The SOL will be effective from 1 July. It is already declared by DIAC.

No need to worry but only hurry....

Thanks

I don't think the new SOL will be effective immediately after announced. First, it was said before a transitional period would be given. Second, it sounds like the significant changes need to go thru a very complicated process... I hope so ....

Hi,

So far I haven't contacted any migration agents myself but I wonder if anyone has received similar info regarding the final release date of the new SOL... I will search the net and look out for any more updates just in case.

I wouldn't spend too much time looking ... until details of the new SOL appear on the DIAC website there is unlikely to be too much on the net that is authoritative.

Best regards.

You are absolutely right, there ain't much info out there but you never know.:skeptical:

Hi i have a question not sure if anyone can answer if your occupation is not on the new SOL could it be possible it may appear on the State migration plan, i ask as i have been reading the link that Gill provided us with and as i read it excludes Fitters and that is my oh occupation, i know as we have already lodged it doesn't effect us but it could effect us by priority!!

Thanks Tania

The list has many of the occupations on the current Migration Occupations in Demand List such as engineers, accountants and selected trades.

However, the following occupational groups are excluded from the Specialised Occupations List:

  • General business occupations such as management, marketing and HR
  • Hairdressing and Commercial Cookery
  • Fitters and welders

Hi Tania,

As far as I have read so far, I believe the states are able to add occupations to their SMP which are not on the SOL, as long as they can prove they need this occupation in their state and the Minister agrees to it!

Hi Lucy

This is not the definite list as far as I am aware. No-one at this stage can confirm what is exactly on the SOL, as the DIAC have not disclosed this yet.

Perhaps you should wait to see what is on the SOL list before you pay out good money and then you find its not on the list!

It is very uncertain times at the moment for people who are starting out on this process. Only a few more weeks and hopefully the list will be published.

I hope it is on the list for you.

Yes, you are right... I think even when the SOL is produced its not going to be implemented until 1st July 2010. So, if you can get the relevant skills assessment done in time then it could be the way forward for you!

Its a tough call hey! One I would not like to be in! Its always a guessing game, a gamble! Its been like that for us all the way through our process... I am surprised my hair has not gone grey already with all the changes we have seen since lodging our application.

I wish you the best of luck.

Well I'm only 23 but when I pop to the hairdressers this saturday I'm making sure they colour over my grey strands!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully we can get it in before 1st July deadline as my partner doesn't need to do a practical test at least which will save time. We could be worrying over nothing and it could be on the new list anyway, or at least the state sponsorship lists. We are looking to apply for 176. I would think it would be unlikely they take such trades off but I uppose we all think the worse.

fingers crossed

p.s. :Randy-git: has this smiley taken anyone else by surprise?

Hi everyone,

Just a thought about the new SOL, South Australia announced a few week's back that they will cease all new applications for state sponsorship on the 14th of may, but now I'm wondering why? maybe they already knew of the delay and were preempting the possible influx of applicants after the announcement , so I'm thinking the new SOL might be announced on the 14th. Maybe I'm putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5

SA has a 14/05 deadline in an effort to ensure that individuals know whether they have sponsorship before the new SOL is scheduled to be introduced - which is generally understood to be on 01/07/2010.

This is from an email to agents from Immi SA last month:

"In anticipation of the release of the revised Skilled Occupations List (SOL) by DIAC at the end of this month and its subsequent implementation in mid 2010 (we are not aware of any specific date as yet), Immigration SA will be adopting the process outlined below for all Sponsorship applications.

If the procedure outlined in the notice are not met, the sponsorship applications may not be finalilsed ready for visa lodgement with DIAC before the implementation of the new SOL."

Best regards.

Today's suspension announcement Fact Sheet:

Temporary Suspension of Certain General Skilled Migration (GSM) Visa Applications (Subclass 175, 176 and 475 Only)

The Australian Government has decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of new applications for certain General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas. The number of pending GSM applications continues to grow as the demand for GSM places exceeds the available supply. The temporary suspension is being implemented to ensure that the occupational profile of applicants for GSM clearly reflects the needs of the Australian labour market.

The temporary suspension will also facilitate the transition from the current Skilled Occupation List (SOL) to the new SOL. It is anticipated that the Government will announce proposed changes to the SOL in May 2010.

The temporary suspension will apply from 8 May 2010. It is expected that it will cease at the end of the

2009-10 program year, that is at the end of 30 June 2010, subject to the approval of the Governor-General in Council of proposed amendments to the Migration Regulations 1994 which will enable the implementation of the new SOL.

Temporary suspension means that people will not be able to lodge a valid application for an affected GSM visa for the duration of the suspension. The temporary suspension applies to all primary (main) applicants for the following GSM visas:

Subclass 175 – Skilled Independent

Subclass 176 – Skilled Sponsored and

Subclass 475 – Skilled Regional Sponsored.

Applications for affected visa subclasses submitted on or after 8 May 2010 will be considered invalid and the application will be returned to the client together with the Visa Application Charge (VAC). However, associated fees such as those incurred for medical examinations, English language tests and skills assessments cannot be refunded as these payments were not made to the Government.

Applications for visa subclasses affected by the temporary suspension will be able to be made once the suspension has been lifted. More information on this change and other initiatives affecting the GSM program is available on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s website at:

What's New? Recent Changes in General Skilled Migration

Cheers,

George Lombard
