SERIOUS QUESTION! dogs ashes

serious question???? is there anyone out there that can help,:idea: we had our beloved boxer dog cremated and put in a little wooden box, that sit proudly on top of our fire place,we had her before our children were born,and picked her from the litter when she was 3 days old, so although now passed over, she is still precious to us,and is a must she comes to oz, our worry is, how do we take the wooden box? do we put it in our case or hand luggage? without customs thinking we are taking something illegal into the country, any ideas:idea::idea:on how to go about this.... please please push them our way.

Firstly can I say your dog was a real beauty. Now she has gone over rainbow bridge I can fully understand why you want to take her ashes with you.

I am not expert at this but if no-one on the forum can help how about getting in touch with Crown or one of the other specialists at removals. They will know what to do I am sure.

Hi Carmen,

 

I work as an international move coordinator and although I haven't moved anyone to Oz with pets ashes, I had a lady move to Canada. She needed a cremation certificate and that was fine. Ashes are not listed as prohibited or restricted imports to Australia, but I would highly recommend that you contact customs at information@customs.gov.au. They will be able to give you the best information as to what you should do.

I know exactly how you feel.

I lost my beloved dog 7 months ago, and I intend to take his ashes with me.

I've looked into taking his ashes with me, and from what I've managed to find out, you are allowed to take the ashes into Oz with you, you don't need any special paperwork or anything.

I'm taking mine in my hand luggage on the plane, as i don't want to entrust them to the shippers.

 

One thing I would like to mention is that it may be wise for you to move the ashes into another container than wood. if you can bring yourself to do this.

 

It seems the only issues they will have with the ashes is the container they are held in. They get very nervous at the mention of the word wood in OZ

 

If they aren't totally happy with the wooden casket, they may want to investigate it more and possibly fumigate it. I'm sure like me you wouldn't want anyone interfering with the ashes.

Hiya ,we brought some of my nan's ashes in a small trinket box wrapped in cling film ,she was in our suitcase and customs didnt bother ,if you can get a cremation cert to be on the safe side but i think youll be ok ,

The box will need to be treated to comply with quarentine requirments.

I would declare rather than try to hide it as if they find it the trouble will be more upsetting than it's worth.

I took some of my mother's ashes on my first trip to Oz. They were in a plastic bag (we're not good on presentation in our family) and I never thought to mention them to anyone at Customs, so we had a little ceremony off the coast at Noosa that Christmas Eve. Now you've raised the subject, I will also be bringing our ginger cat's ashes somehow too. Probably in another plastic bag.

Contact the immigration authorities,get a definitave answer from them.

The last thing you want/need is to be told "no way matey" when entering oz.

THANKS STEVE SO WOULD IT BE BEST FOR US TO TAKE THE ASHES OUT OF THE WOODEN BOX, AND PUT THEM INTO A PLASTIC BAG, AND PLACE THEM INTO EITHER, OUR HAND LUGGAGE, OR SUIT CASE (WHICH ONE WOULD YOU KNOW?) THEN CARRY THE WOODEN BOX THROUGH CUSTOMS I GATHER IN OUR HAND LUGGAGE, AS I HAVE READ THAT ALL THEY ARE CHECKING FOR, IS TO MAKE SURE THE BOX IS SOIL FREE.

:v_SPIN: hi am taking my nans ashes with me , i am gonna put her in a plastic bag and then in a tupper ware with secure lid! dont want any bits going a miss! i am gonna keep nan with me in hand luggage and have death and cremation certificate with me too. Deciced to buy a nice box when i get to perth , i wouldnt risk the wooden box either as they are real fussy about it. If customs ask they can see other then that she satys in my bag. I had loads of replies when i asked on here about taking nans ashes it really doesnt sem a prob.
