Dyslexia

Recommended Posts

Guest briananddiane

Hi, my son has been diagnosed with dyslexia. Can anyone tell us what the policy is for this in primary schooling etc. Does he have to attend a special needs school?.

We are waiting for our visa's so hope to move this Christmas.

Any help would be very appreciated.

In Australia it is highly unlikely that a child with dyslexia label on its own would receive any additional support other than the run of the mill in school support offered eg Reading Recovery or occasional remedial reading. Additional support comes with significant disabilities eg intellectual disability (IQ sub 70), physical disability, any of the pervasive developmental disorders (eg autism) or speech language disorders (usually language rather than speech).

I dont know about UK but if he is statemented then you may need to be a bit careful if you havent already got your visas. Children with special ed needs do raise a red flag for the medical officers who will probe the extent of the condition and what ramifications it may have for future costs to the Aus taxpayer.
