I'm really hoping not - but until those lists come out from the states who knows what they want?

We've just got to hope that if places are starting to recover from recession issues and with the continuing influx of migrants, mining/gas projects and baby booms that they're still gonna need homes/schools/hospitals to be built etc. for them which requires trades?? I'm trying to stay positive in this uncertain time

Hi Nat

Really p*sses you off with all these changes, and whats even worse is that no one seems to know whats happening yet..... because the ozzie government haven't fully worked it out yet and told everyone..... I lodged my SS 5th Sept 09 so hopefully Gonna get mine soon too and just hoping that the government listen to W.A. and let them have the trades they need desperately.

Cheers

Hi all,

my brother in law is in Perth and tells me that there is a big demand for carpenters etc. and suggested that I should consider a move to Perth. My problem is that due to my age, I can only apply for the employer sponsored visa. My brother in law has kindly been networking on behalf to anyone in the building trade to see if they will sponsor me.

Someone he approached with my resume has had a really bad experience with a sponsored employee and is reluctant to go down that route again!! He did however take my resume and posted it on a tradesmen web site.

I really don't know how easy it will be for me to find employer sponsored work as a carpenter/joiner/cabinet maker...has anyone on this forum had any on sucess or know anyone who has?

Many thanks

Tom

Sorry I can't help with your employer sponsorship problem. I was just wondering what area of perth he's working, north of the river, or the south, or in the city ????.

Cheers

Hi Tom, my OH has just been offered a sponsorship as a cabinet maker in Brisbane. His actual profession is a little more specialised but it comes under the cabinet maker remit for the sake of argument. I reckon selling yourself as as cabinet maker will give you the edge over others - This has been true in our case.

Thank you all for your replies.

My brother in law isn't a carpenter but he is in the fortunate position of having Australian Citizenship and has lived in Perth for the last 11 years. (He got his residency through a defacto visa).

I will take your advice with regards to the cabinet making skills as although I consider myself a carpenter, I trained as a joiner all those years back in my youth!! I was also a Contract Manager for Clive Christian where we designed, manufactured and fitted out kitchens etc. but it was all very expensive stuff...€140,000 for a kitchen, sort of thing!

You have both given me food for thought and I think I will definitely re look at my resume and covering letter.

Many thanks again for your replies

Tom

I had just got in touch with Go matilda a couple of days before the Feb 8th fiasco, to get the ball rolling and got a reply, but basically told me they would re-contact me when they had more info regarding the changes, being a tradie, taper/jointer (fibrous plasterer) im stuck in limbo as i dont know where we stand or what happens next or if we will even get a chance to lodge for a visa, im debating wheather to go ahead and get my AQF III done or wait till i hear more back from go matilda, What would you do????

i tried to get sponsorship 12 months ago by trawling through their phone books and masterbuilders members list. i must have sent about 300 emails with cv attatched and was suprised to get about 60 back , most telling me they don't do sponsorship because of the downturn they were experiencing at the time , but quite a few said to come and see them when i get visa , which although isn't helpful to those waiting its good to know that there should be work when you get there . they could of just binned me as junkmail. if anybody is good on computers its worth doing a course on the computer building design program . i can't remember what its called , but they use it a lot out there and if i leave this page to have a look it'l take me another hour to write this again  its also worth remembering that in some states you need a trade licence to operate as well as safety card and insurance

Hope you guys right about tradies being ok.

My OH is a joiner to trade but worked as a project manager until last year when he was made redundant. We had no choice but for him to return to joinery work. We will be applying through the GSM carpenter/joiner route. (he does not have a degree in construction management so cannot apply to go to Oz via this occupation.) We contacted and appointed Go Matilda about a week before the dreaded changes were announced and are in the process of submitting evidence for the paperwork for the vetassess skills assessments, I think/hope!!

The future is uncertain, but I am carrying on as I think that all visa applications carry an element of risk, and certainly by the sounds of things DIAC have been giving visa applicants a real roller coaster ride the last couple of years. I stay positive by reminding myself that people are still being granted visas every day, and I try to read these posts to cheer myself up.

Don't give up on your dreams hopefully we will all find a way to make that magic visa happen for us even if we do lose some hair, teeth (through gnashing) etc.

My OH is a fiberous plasterer, or suspended ceiling fixer/ dry wall liner and as far as I can see he is the only one on PIO, so I am hoping that due to the lack of them migrating to Oz he may be in demand, :biggrin:Wishfull thinking, Lesley:wink:
