I realise that now ... I'm usually so careful about insurance ... just glad we got away with it!

I have used True Traveller that specialises in migrant policies. It will cover you right up to the date you become properly settled in AUS, not just when you arrive. Depending on the level of insurance it also covers 7 days out of AUS that we will need to validate the visa. I had to make a small claim on the policy and I was refunded without any quibble. Highly recommended.

I saw that, I think John from Moneycorp Can help lock in the best rate for PIO members.

As of 1400 26/10 GBP v. AUD = 1.7206
I could now get 1.7130 from my currency provider. I am not able to state the name on this web site.

Today my daughter received letter from Centrelink to lodge the AOS bond with Commonwealth Bank. So off we went, completed the paperwork, deposited the required $14,000 (me and the wife) and charged $150 for the privilege. Interest from the bond is paid into the sponsors bank account every 6 months so that will be recovered. We now have to send proof of payment etc to Centrelink who will then notify IMMI PVC. Shouldn't be too long now.
Date of lodgement 01/12/2014.

Hi, just planning ahead and was interested to hear you paid the AOS bond, I thought our sponsor would have to do this with us transferring funds into her account. Did you have any problems doing it yourselves, it would be easier when sponsor is working.

Ah yes, I used the Royal ‘we’. My daughter (sponsor) had to pay the bond from her account but I gave her the money to do it. When I said ‘we’, that referred to myself and daughter going to the bank.

I wish we could have done the bond ourselves. Hopefully she will give us the interest that is accrued and paid into her account each 6 months.......

brilliant, what part of the sunshine coast are you heading for, we are going to caloundra.

So are we!  Moffat Beach to be precise - well that is where our daughter is - we want to try and be within half and hour's drive.  We must up when we eventually get there!

Lots of people think that Fisher1 but it's wrong. The terms and conditions of travel insurance are your holiday must start and end in the uk. If it's a one way trip it's invalid.

Also be very careful because most credit card insurances only cover you if your return trip to the UK is for a very limited period, many for 30 days only.  I came over last year for 3 months but had to pay around £80 for the credit card insurance to be extended so that it would cover me for the 3 month trip.  Being over now in Australia this time on a 600 tourist visa, it was very straightforward to go into Center  Link and get a “visitor” Medicare card which will cover me for any essential medical care.  Incidentally I found the site I used which gave me links to the companies which do one way travel insurance to Australia - it was “finder.com.au”.

On another note altogether I can report that I have now bought a car ?!  So excited to now have my own wheels again , though my son and daughter have been very good about me borrowing theirs up till now .   For the registration I had to supply something which showed my name and address in Australia.  They were happy enough to accept a letter from my pension provider which noted my change of address.  Very bizarrely they also wanted to know my eye and hair colour!!  I did point out that shoe size would be more appropriate than hair colour as that doesn’t change (!!). Apparently it’s Queensland rules and maybe they just wanted to know more because I don’t have an Australian driving licence.

Hi AMP yes it's great to have a car again isn't it? How strange to be asked your eye and hair colour - we weren't so obviously NSW have different criteria? Or maybe it was because you don't have a premenant visa yet?   Ah well, as long as they registered you,

Bon Voyage Catlady.

Hope you  and your daughter have a good flight and very best wishes for your new life in Oz.

We arrived about 4 hours ago, and in all the excitement I actually forgot about the insurance for the trip!  I sold my car the day before I left the UK, which was cutting it fine to say the least.   It's now 2.30am and I'm still awake.  Good luck everybody still waiting, I'll be keeping an eye out and fingers crossed for you all.
