Must be within the standards set buy the Oz authorities to be able to emigrate to Oz.

What has to happen is that the BBC do a follow up on those that do take the plunge and let us see how they did get on by either staying or after whatever time returning to the UK like some did in the first series.

I think they are trying to either put us off applying given the backlog, or trying to steer us to NZ or Darwin or Adelaide as maybe more go to the other parts of Oz!

Conspiracy theory?

You know, I thought the same thing.... Well, I actually thought they were trying to put us of. On average more families decide not to make the move, then do. Were as last year, most people were opting for the Ozzy life. I applied to go on that show, but was turned down. I have sold my house, just waiting for visa now. I have a massive irish family and we all live in the same town as my husbands family in essex. But I guess I was maybe, too keen! Gladly, we are not too unrealistic... Houses are about the same, food etc.... the same, some more expensive, some slightly cheaper. But it is thier attitude and lifestyle we are after, not a cheap $.....

For me, I came to Oz with NO expectations. My theory being that nothing could disappoint or bug me! Dangerous perhaps but you know what..worked for me.

OH did all the internet research before we left. I didnt want to know anything. I would keep saying "until we`re there, I dont want to know". I really didnt want to get my hopes up and be dashed at the final hour!

We have now been here 4 years next month, bought our own home. We still have a mortgage, we still have bills, we still work BUT we have a much better quality of life!

DONT EVER LET A TV PROG CHANGE YOUR MIND!

If you want to come here and give it a go, your heart is set....DO IT! The worst that can happen is that you have to/want to go home but at least u can say "I did it" rather than "I wish I did it"

Hi all, new member and just starting the long haul of trying to get to oz (perth). This latest series I think has been a waste of time, why do all the families expect to pay off all their mortgage and still get the home of their dreams, maybe a few more realistic families would be better on the show. How can you compare lifestyle in oz with here in the uk, need I say more, lol. I reckon houses in Oz are about 50 % cheaper and swapping your house in the uk for one in Oz must be worth it. Does anybody fast forward those messages from family at the end, I cant stand that, that puts most of the families off from moving anyway. Nothing like a rant on a friday :)

I never "watch" but sky+ them so I can do exactly that.

Your information is 7 years out of date.

It really depends what part of the U.K you are comparing prices with

Perth prices are about on par with the south east of U.K.

At least that was the case June 2007.

The new series which will air early next year will have some families coming to Darwin is going to rent my house for the week. Yes it is more than the family would want to pay for a home when they first arrive but it is not a million dollars or anything like that. The producers told me they like to show the families what they can realistically buy upon arrival but also show them the next level of housing so they can see what they could upgrade into after they have settled in and perhaps have saved a little more to upgrade their home just as people try to do whether in the UK or in Australia. I think this is a good idea as it gives the people a much better idea of the choices they have and perhaps some realistic future options to work toward. I am orginally from the UK and coming to Australia was definitely the best thing I ever did! Check out www.realestate.com.au or www.owner.com.au to check out house prices. the first site is houses for sale by real estate agents, the second is for sell directly by owner.

Do you mean this is the series that we in UK have already had where Darwin was featured for the first time or is this another series ?

As the Oz Government have to a great degree closed the door now on Poms being a priority need in Oz I think the Golden Goose is no longer laying the golden eggs.

South Australia for one has basically shut up shop on wanting Poms.

5 or 10 years ago it was the answer to a maidens prayer in emigrating to Oz.

It may well be in some cases that it still is, it all depends on your UK circumstances. In the main Oz is a lot dearer than UK. The Oz wages are a lot lower than UK and the Oz cost of living has gone up in leaps and bounds compared to wages.

I love Oz and visit on a regular basis. But, I could not afford to live in Oz. It is too expensive compared to what is available in UK. Free health care, free education to name but 2 of the priorities of life.

As some Oz guests I had staying with not long ago said, "If the UK had Oz weather we would be queing up to get into Britain".

Sorry Amaroo would have to disagree with you there. I would not be queing up for Britan even if it was hot, Australia all the way baby!!!!

Sorry 'hazeotoole', read my post carefully.

It was not me you should disagree with. It was Australians themselves that said it and I have a lot pass through staying with me from all over Oz.

Whilst Oz has a lot going for it, mainly the weather, the cost of living now is far higher in comparison to wages compared to the UK. I have just had 7 months down there in NSW, SA, Vic and the ACT.

It is a great place to holiday that is without doubt but it is a very hard place to start a new life now compared to even 2 years ago.

Reading further back on property comparisons. Possibly 80% of Oz properties would not be allowed to be built if they had to be to UK regulations and standards.

I repeat, Oz may suit the odd UK person/s and good luck to them if it does. But it is certainly not the country it once was as far as the 'Pioneering Pom' concerned.

Immigration to Australia continues to be a mystery to me. I know of older people here that have been here for a long time, have their residancy, but can't become Australians cause they are too old apparently.

Shame about that - they have earned their stripes I think.

Meanwhile, there is talk about some immigration being backed off to protect aussie jobs from overseas workers, but as far as I am concerned the more the merrier as long as they are good people!

Here in the Whitsundays, we even have Benny Southall going for it in the best job in the world. Living on Hamilton island for 6 months and getting paid $160k to do it, is pretty sweet.

Over on the mainland there is plenty of opportunity for sea changers to come on over and just into businesses such as a friends B and b she has for sale. Whitsunday waterfront and seaside property

1/2 way Brisbane to Cairns, our locality has whitehaven beach and 74 islands right in the heart of the great barrier reef..... and if you don't believe it Google image search "heart reef" - yeah that one is ours.

good luck with your Australian aspirations.

Why do you say that? What evidence is there to back this up? I am very interested to hear!

In the main Oz is a lot dearer than UK. The Oz wages are a lot lower than UK and the Oz cost of living has gone up in leaps and bounds compared to wages.

Not for me! I have found MANY things that are cheaper than the UK. Insurances, my car, some electrical, some food items. Plus my wages are the same here adn I am doing less hours than I did in the uk. Granted I am doing every weekend but that is my choice as it fits in with OH shifts

All depends what you are looking for. Education was not an issue as OH kids over 18 and working. Health care: For the first time in my 37 years I have private health coverage and have had no issues at all!

We were looking for a lifestyle change adn we got exactly what we wanted!

It was announced on OZ TV and UK TV. I have been sent numerous web links to newspaper articles in the Oz press reporting exactly the same.

One can nit pick on certain items across the whole spectrum. But, in general terms the cost of living is in the main higher in Oz than UK. I have some Oz people who have been staying with me recently and said exactly the same. It is swings and roundabouts. What I do accept is within Oz there will be a vast difference in costs depending where one lives.

Rather a silly comment if your children are not in education. The education system in UK is free to all who want it, those who want private, pay. Health care, if you want private then no problem, a lot have it in UK. But it is free for everyone who does want it.

Where people get this notion that Health care and education is free in this country beats me.

It would be considerably cheaper for me to have private health care when I calculate how much NI I pay. Education as a single man with no kids, I am still paying through my council tax. Nothing comes free apart from the museums lol

Our cost of living is definitely less, the odd thing may cost more but overall much less.

My prescriptions cost about $15 (approx7.50gbp) not sure how much they are in the Uk now but i don't think this is bad. I see a private specialist sometimes , that ends up costing me approx $50 (approx 25 gbp) after Medicare refund some , again im not sure how much it would cost to see a private specialist in the UK nowadays. If i opt for the public specialist it costs nothing but you do wait much, much longer for an appointment.

All my insurance policy's are less, be it house, contents or car.

I spend on average $250 pr week on food. (family of 4). I used to spend about 150 quid in Asda so again a saving for me.

The more expensive things here seem to be mortgages and education.

Mortgages i cant comment on as we were lucky enough to sell our house in the UK before everything fell on its butt and so managed by scrimping and saving something chronic to buy outright.

Yep the schools cost a tad more in that you buy the books etc, i guess it swings and roundabouts as in the UK school was free but i don't think a week went by without some sort of sponsored run, silence, spell etc etc or other fundraising letters coming home, lol.

I do think where you live in the UK and where you choose to live here WILL play a large factor in your cost of living, as will your lifestyle, jeez in the UK we had 3 or 4 takeaways or meals out every week, here maybe one or two as we just cant afford it.

Neither will you have an accurate cost of living until you have been here a good few months and ''learnt'' where is best to buy what and when and where the bargains can be found.

Just nicely had 7 months in Oz and after 6 months 18 months earlier certainly found a very large increase in the cost of living.

Depends on one's lifestyle as to cost.

"sponsored run, silence, spell etc etc or other fundraising letters coming home". Have nothing to do with nor are relative to education, that is free. Those items are options.

"I do think where you live in the UK and where you choose to live here WILL play a large factor in your cost of living," Agree with you and have always said that.

You say you cannot afford more than one or two Takeaways in Oz , it was/is a very unhealthy lifestyle if you have takeaways as regular as that. Also you search for bargains !!!!.

So it obviously is not the land of milk and honey you thought ?.

Does it not depend on your life style over here,(UK) running to work, sorting out kids, domestic chores, then 3/4 takeways can be an option on many occasions, its called personal choice and convenience, healthy? yes it can be! but this life style just could have been the contributory factor of going to the milk & honey

Takeaways and eating out doesn't have to be junk food you know, there is life beyond Mcdonalds and KFC!!

Yes you are right i choose to look for bargains, i don't feel the need to wear designer clothes just to prove who i am or keep up with the Jonseys. Thankfully because i choose to look for bargains both myself and hubby can work part time and spend more time together (which also happens to be a reason for us leaving the uk,,i guess another mission accomplished for us!). This was our choice and maybe if we both went to work full time we could afford to eat out every night, personally i prefer quality time with my hubby and kids rather than running the rat race to fund luxury's and expensive items, after all a $10 kettle from Crazy Clarke's will boil water just like a $50 shiny steel one, lol.

We left the UK to slow down a little and not work to live, that was a personal choice and we haven't looked back yet, makes me realise the money we wasted in the Uk on boys toys and luxurys didnt mean anything and certainly didnt make us happier than we are now. Yep we earn less than in the UK but thats our choice would i change anything back given the choice??? Not a chance it didnt take me long once here to realise theres more to life than earning money and fancy cars!

Exactly what my hubby says, our NI contributions funded the health system so it wasn't really free. We'd paid NI contributions for 22 years prior to leaving, wonder how much that amounted to?
