It is, however, quite an insular place as you will have found - I guess that comes of the two income suburban families working their butts off for the big house. I guess I have never found it difficult to make acquaintances but I dont know that I would put too many of them in the real friends bracket - they have been very transient over the years. If you are young, there are a few clubs/bars around (can ask around the young singles here at work if you like). Always happy to have a coffee but I suspect I am of that demographic which would have very limited appeal for any new migrant (retired old woman!:biglaugh:) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have been here 2.5 years and have made some good friends. There are so many things to do in Canberra and I find because of the lack of commuting many people socialise afterwork, even during the week. What kind of things are you into? I arrived with my gf in feb but she has to go home at xmas cos of crap visa restrictions. couldnt agree more with ingy, the place is rubbish, mainly cos the folks seem uneducated and have a hugh chip on thier shoulder that they are laughed at throughout Australia and They are. I traveled oz on hols last yr then moved out all exctied to live here. chose canberra as had never been and just assumed it was like rest of oz without a beach, what a hugh mistake!! no wonder they need a live in canberra campaign website!! the place is awful!!!! LOL on the contrary, the education rate in Canberra would be higher than pretty much anywere else in the country on a percapita basis. It is a different place though, no doubt about that - it has a very high itinerant population, because of all those highly educated people who come in for contracts or transitional high level postings within government services. People move on from here - it is often a valuable stepping stone in a career path hence the reason that most people are very career focussed - not to mention cash strapped because of exorbitant mortgages/rents. What is it exactly that you are looking for? There is plenty going on if you know where to look for it. Have you tried RiotACT for some heads up about things to do? Guest opusca1 Posted December 1, 2009 Share Posted December 1, 2009 hey quoll. your idea of an education system and mine are very different. im a chartered accountant and tax speacialist from the uk!! the exams i undertook are considered the most difficult in the world, In oz u just turn up do 1 unit at a time and after 5 units ur an accountant!! anyway aprt from that the women are ugly the guys are savage ill mannered hooligans!! theres nothing nice about the city, its horrible!! im after fun times and hope to find a professional single girl, but canberra isnt the palce!! im heading back to uk in 2 weeks and am considering goin awol as the place relaly is that bad!!! just wish id did more research on it!! but i will make it my gola to ensure any1 i know never has the misfortune of coming anywhere near this god for saken dump ever!!! Canberra is a hybrid city/country town and it was planned and everything is generally less than 100 years old - there is a lot of green (well as far as Australian green goes) and you can see the bush from anywhere in town. We are well endowed with facilities - more olympic size swimming pools in Canberra than in the whole of UK at the last count for example. It is very much a working town so most of the population are public servants - with the negative connotation that that brings but most of the ones I know are no longer the be-cardiganed lifers but quite dynamic and driven young things earning more than I ever did. The disadvantage of that too is that most of the families are two income families to suport the over large mortgages which are required to even get a rabbit hutch here. As the population has grown they have built up the outer suburbs which, IMHO, are somewhat soul-less and the inner city suburbs are gradually being gentrified and, sadly, medium-density-ized. Weatherwise it is good if you like sunshine - we have seasons but in general the sun shines aboout 350 days a year and there is much less rainfall than we actually need so we are in drought conditions and have been for about 7 years now. Many Canberrans have a place down the coast as well - I quite take opusca1's point about the nearest beaches - Bateman's Bay is Redcar-Downunder but there are some glorious beaches just a bit further afield. My favourites would be 4 hours south down on 90 mile beach - not the crowds that the South Coast has either. We are also just over 2 hours from the snow fields if that is your bag. In just under 3 hours you can get to Sydney which, in comparison, is dirty and much seedier - the road there is boring as b*tsh*t though so flying is recommended:biglaugh: As I said, people come and go here a lot - occasionally you do encounter a lifer but there is quite a lot of mobility. Neither of my kids live here - one lives in the bush and the other lives in UK and I dont know if either will choose to come back here. I work with a bunch of people and only one of them is locally born and bred the others are all ring ins from country NSW or England like myself. The disadvantage of that is that most families dont have the extended family support that they might have done in smaller places - that does sort of increase the sense of isolation for most families. We have all the national buildings and it has very much the national capital flavour of DC - so we do get a lot of tourists ticking the "I've seen parliament house" box. When you live here though, just like living in London you drive past them and never give them a second thought for the most part. We have a thriving volunteer workforce - volunteering in ACT is alive and well even though most folk have their real life commitments as well and I think that is often a sign of a healthy community. However, there is always room for more! We dont get a lot of the stuff that young adults probably require (or think they require) so the club scene, whilst it is there is obviously going to be nothing like the scene in Sydney or Melbourne. We very occasionally get big name performers but usually Canberra doesnt feature on their itinerary. Arts and drama are strong locally but not perhaps the high quality stuff that you can walk into any day of the week in London. Sure we do get good visiting exhibitions but not in the volume that you get in cities of 10 - 20 times the size. Remember that we are only 330k. It doesnt float my boat but, then again, I havent found anywhere in Australia that I can call home - it is missing "mellow" and "depth" for me - it's all harsh and shallow. It's very interesting hearing from someone who has lived there for a good number of years. I love the arts and drama side of things, and am the first buying a couple of tickets to shows that come up our way in sleepy Karratha. We had the Royal Ballet here a while ago and a few other shows, but its basically down to Perth if we want something special......again thank you for such a great appraisal. Now back to that cheeky monkey Opusca lol. I imagine Quoll to be a younger Jo Lumley Opus (61) google her if you are too young to remember her! I sincerely hope your girl friend isnt aware of PIO, your statement "you will take anything" would make me rush down to the local clinic lol. Ok for you the place is boring get yourself a car/bike and explore, take a cheapie flight along the coast and do your "baywatch impersonation". restfamily Posted December 3, 2009 Share Posted December 3, 2009 Okay you guys need to get a grip, is this the first time you have really moved somewhere totally new? I am very happy in Canberra, it’s really the first place I have ever called home. Accordingly to all the posts I should be having a real problem given I am a single parent, not that I have had a problem in making either friends with children or people to go drinking with. I have also dated a few nice guys, admittedly the last one was English, some also not so good, but that is life. I would also like to think I am one of those rare things in Canberra, an attractive and well educated lady with a successful career and an income substantially over $100,000. (Please don’t read that as a brag, I try to avoid mentioning money but I think it supports my argument in this case). I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to emigrate, if done well you can really grow as a person. Take the best from the experience and learn from it. Who knows who long I will be here, I guess that depends on who I meet and where my career goes, but for now I am very happy to call Canberra home.
