skin damage

one good reason to move back to the UK is to stop your skin being damaged by the sun. Using sun block or not people here 90% of the time look at least 5+ years older than they are, sometimes worse. I had a friend I was working with last year, keen offshore fisherman, who in the conversation said,"you know that bloke he's our age", I thought , excuse me?, I was 39 at the time and had this fellow down as being 50 at least. Turns out he was 44, I thought well that's the sun for you!. Anyone else noticed this?, also how many aussie smoke!, absolutely loads here!!, that combined with a real dental problem and bad diet....fast food!, makes me think I'm living in a blue collar nightmare, (not everyone is like this but a lot of people are). I am a blue collar person myself but if I compare these things with the UK , ( I know I'm not in the UK!), person for person it seems peoples attitude to health/food/smoking etc is 20 years behind UK. Footnote....didn't oz get the unhappy title of the fattest nation on earth?, if it did beating the yanks is some going....sort of blows the bronzed Aussie god myth out of the water.......just my observations...I'm not having a go...honest!

There are probably a lot of reasons for a person to want to go back.

The important thing however is not to look outside, and to have the courage to look inside.

Why do I want to go back? For an Englishman to say it is because of the sun and the smokes it is a bit strange. You guys come because of the lack of sun and last time I checked, smoking is not compulsory.

Coming from a welder however this becomes hilarious. Honestly!Welding produces as much UV rays as a tanning bed. You should know that. Fumes from welding are like chain smoking. And don't tell me Australia is responsible for the UV and the fumes from welding. You'll get the same if you go to Iceland, guaranteed.

I spent last weekend welding a gate for my holiday house in 50x50 galvanised and powdercoated with a MIG welder and did not grind the paint and galvo off and got a big headache thanks to my won stupidity. Also got a farmers tan on my left arm. Conceded I am not a professional but I should know better.

Lack of safety equipment? Talk to your union rep or change jobs. There are shonky building companies in the UK who employ illegals and get them on the roof without safety harness. Does it mean you have to emigrate from the UK?

Hardly

Bad diet leading to obesity and dental issues? You can not be serious. Who is forcing you to eat at mackers? What stops you from paying a private heath insurance that includes dental cover?

We don't have Dental in Medicare? If we have time we may go into a debate about "free" health systems versus private and the pro and cons about it.

I can only quickly add that at my wife's surgery, the number of free loaders that waste government money only because it is free is so exorbitantly large that I don't want to think the abuse and the cost of a "free" dental system.

Having said that, I think that as a migrant to a new country we go through phases and periods and when we feel down we tend to blame the environment for our unresolved problems.

Working in Centrelink for 12 years, I have seen and heard everything that has ever been said on the subject. And I have seen the heartache caused by what I call swinging migrants, that is, those who live a few years each side of the ocean each time building up reasons to move and then more reasons to move again. Families spread around, disunity, poverty, and everything that you do not want when you migrate to a new country.

Best attitude is to work towards identifying first and then overcoming or solving the obstacles in the way of a better life in your country of choice and realising that moving countries does not solve problems but create new ones.

Only my opinion of course, not to be taken too seriously:cute:

PS

As for obesity, look at the UK members of that lotto sindicate that won yesterday. Every single member is obese. Amazing! They must all work for an Australian Macdonalds.

You clearly appreciate the Australian way of life as do i, i feel very privileged to be here, as there are many people trying to move over and are either being knocked back or finding it difficult to to get the ball rolling. Despite Australia's flaws my life has improved 2 fold, i am far more aware of how i look after myself, and for the record i find the medicare/doctors service here far more professional, i was diagnosed with a condition that the UK doctors and specialists had no idea about, yes i have to pay for it! but i get what i want.

you should really read ALL my posts on this subject to comment...i will say that this is my experience comparing industry here and in oz. there are rubbish companies i the uk but here in oz i worked for a 'household' name company and they are talking the talk on safety but not walking the walk. as for the welding comment on uv rays!!!!.....you cant get burnt if you are wearing the correct gear....you burnt your arm????????????....well you cant have been wearing protective clothing. the headache you had will have been 'galvo flu' caused by welding galvanised metal ....again with no protective gear, ie, respirator. you should again read my earlier comments on my life here compared with uk, ie, same industry, social circles etc. got to go house viewing!!!!

house viewing over...went ok......anyway, my posts have always said that i think oz is a really nice place and that i wish my wife and myself could have settled but we didnt, and i am truly envious of people who have , i think its a hell of an achievement to try it out for a few years and even more if you stay and love it as many people do. but my observations are taken from living here in the illawarra and working in heavy industry and being involved in local rugby union....so i FEEL that workwise the north east of uk is on the whole a safer environment from a heavy eng point of view, because there are so many rules and regs nowadays. when i lived in oz in 1991 i thought oz was ahead of uk in both saftey and work payments, hols etc. i feel the uk has bypassed oz , IN MY INDUSTRY, this is only because the EU has made uk do it. and i do know as i have worked on many contracts in the uk, with no holiday pay or sick pay, for 3 years on one job!!!. this all stopped when the government brought in hols for everyone, dont think the tories would have!!!. on my last uk job i had 5 weeks hols + 3 liue days, my last job here in oz it was 4 weeks flat and you can carry them over each year, great but if you take your hols regularly it can be frowned upon....only my experience. i worked an average 44 hours a week in the uk, (inc meal breaks of half an hour a day), here in oz it was 48+ with a 20 min meal break in an 8 hr 20 min shift!!, and the overtime was everywhere and you were expected to do it. again this was for one of the top companies in oz. now someone who works in a different field of work from me cant really comment and say things like, "i get 6 weeks a year and every other monday off", or, "im on a lot better conditions than uk", because i am literally comparing like for like. another thing people bring up is long service...dont make me f***ing laugh!!, my longest job in steel fabrication was 3 years , ( in uk), so even if that job had been in oz long service would have been no good to me, i would rather have 5 weeks+ a year thanks.i know someone is going to say i love oz and my job as a nurse/doctor/surveyor, etc, etc, etc, is a lot better here and i love the 'lifestyle', i am not having a go at anyone, just i feel for blue collar people who are not running there own business, eg, welder in a fabrication shop, the conditions are worse, in my experience. think about this in the uk at my old rugby club when i was talking about how i was a contractor jumping from job to job and 'enjoying' occasional times on the dole, a woman in our company who was a private shcool teacher, said,"i didnt know that people did that in this day and age", now either she lives in an ivory tower or she really was oblivious to it all, but i think sometimes people on pio are like that, walk a mile in my shoes before you comment, or at least read my posts PROPERLY. even though i know this is a waste of time because the usual comments will appear. only my opinion.

I am not slagging aussies off, my relatives are all aussies and proud of it. That's what some of my patients say...I have to say it's a foreign concept for me, could you do that in the UK??

Can you drink rainwater in the UK? Er, yes of course you can. Clouds don't actually know where they were born etc. They can travel thousands of miles (which is why when Chernobyl happened radiaoctivity leapt over 3000 mile away). The bulk of the water you drink from clouds in Perth will come from the oceans (evaporation). Same in the UK. In fact as Australia is the worlds leading polluter, you will find acid rain is more prevalent there than in the UK. Drink the water in both places - it wont do any harm.
