As a principle I would say the same.   I think generally it's a comedic character entertaining children.

I'd imagine there are individuals who's 'act' I might not be comfortable with and who I feel are inappropriate.  But that's true of any category of entertainer - it's down to that individual.

The question I am asking myself why do you need to dress up as a drag queen to read a book to children.
Surely the story of the book is more important???

Also the next paragraphs from the same report you posted:

The investigation found that a child had asked how many genders there were and the speaker, who had been invited as a guest to talk about “gender-neutral language and the concept of gender in the LGBTQ+ environment”, responded that there could be as many as 72 gender identities.

Later, a child was briefly taken outside the classroom by a teacher to “remind the pupil of the school’s expectations that all pupils are entitled to their own opinions, and that they do not have to agree with a guest speaker, but they do have to show respect”.

And?

I find it ok that people think this is an issue to discuss. That's great, debate is healthy. But in terms of priority discussions that need to happen in the UK right now, this is about issue #759. People can't afford to eat. Any chance we can sort that first?

Best tell that to all the folks pushing the agenda policy

I know one thing for sure

when our future generations unearth a body in a historical dig as seen on time team etc it will either be male or female , non of this 72 gender nonsense

and yes agree far bigger problems to be sorting out in the world than this load of nonsense.

Do you think it’s more important to be dressed as a drag queen to read a book to the children or the subject of the book more important

You mean the Mail and Express? They don't care about the other priorities. That's the only place 'outrage' exists.

I don’t expect the Mail or Express are running daily stories about our economy being the worst amongst developed countries, the fact that companies are leaving the UK in droves, the fact that more people than ever are using food banks and more children live in poverty than in recent memory, the fact that the NHS is on its last legs, the fact that our most valued public servants can’t afford to live properly, the fact that our public transport is strangled by strikes, food inflation is 20%, people can’t afford to rent and, if they can afford a house their mortgage has spiralled due to Truss etc. I mean, I could make this 10 pages. I get that it’s not in the interests of the Mail or Express to raise this and I doubt their readers want to acknowledge it but it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Still, boats and drag queens eh?

Credit where it’s due. So often we skirt around being clear where we stand on things like this because we know it’s controversial.

There are actually 81 genders.  🙃  Here they are: https://helpfulprofessor.com/types-of-genders-list/

I've had enough of this nonsense.  I'm off to bed.  Night night.

BTW I identify as number 17.

I remember people dressing up to read us stories back in the 60s and 70s (which is probably when we really should've been worrying about them!) and thinking it was all a bit pointless. Like you, I just wanted to hear the story, but most kids seem to enjoy the reader dressing up and getting into character.

Drag Queen attire has nothing to do with the subject matter of the stories being read.

Ah.....Jackanory the bastion of childrens story telling for people of a certain age reached its pinnacle storytelling when Rick Mayall read Roald Dahl books. His performance was lauded and remembered as a highlight of his career.

Now.....At no point would anyone suggest that his other work would be suitable for an underage audience, and guess what he was appropriately silly, appropriately rude, he used appropriate language & he was extremely animated. He brought the stories to life in a way other readers could not. Same with drag queen story time

Fair point. To be honest, I'm rather on the fence about the whole issue but then I think it's good to be open-minded.

In my opinion they should've cancelled Betty Confetti simply because she's a man dressed as a woman, but if her act was inappropriate for children in anyway - and that would include any content regarding sex or gender identities - then it was absolutely the right decision. I haven't seen the act so I can't judge.

The event was being staged in a public place, so children would have been there with their parents or parental consent. It's not the same as if the event had taken place in a school, where parents might not have been informed beforehand. If you don't like the idea of a man in drag reading your children a story then don't let them attend, but that doesn't give you the right to say something should be cancelled because you're personally 'not comfortable' with it.

All this drag queen malarkey does absolutely nothing for me, but I'll take their side over a bunch of narrow-minded bigots any day.

According to a recent report, 1 in 7 children in Australia live in poverty.  7.2% of children in the USA are living in deep poverty.  First world countries eh?

In 1983 Bob Hawke said "by 1990, no child in Australia will be living in poverty".

The world is in a mess.

Good question? What do @Parley and @simmo perceive the harmful impact on children at Drag Queen reading hour would be?

It shouldn't be that hard to figure out for any parent of a young child.

@Parley, where do you think a child is more at risk from perverts, drag reading for at the library or a Catholic school?

The same debate comes up again and again here.  Then when you drill down into what "poverty " is it gets slightly confusing.  Can a household be living in "poverty" for example, if they all have smart phones, netflix subscriptions etc.
