When I was small child I remember back there in the early 1960's, I was watching black and white TV. My parents, even back then, restricted my viewing of the nightly news but I would sneak into the living room thinking that TV was all about shows such as Mr Squiggle, Supercar, Play School and possibly Sooty, if that is an accurate memory.

I recall watching the nightly news, which was all about war. For a little kid, I did not know what war was but I now know that I was watching the Middle East wars back then and that was prior to the Indo-China wars which were to come later.

60 odd years later and nothing has changed.  I am fed to the back teeth with Middle East wars being in my face for 60 years or so. Consequently I generally do not watch programs relating to the Middle East.

Ignorance is Bliss? No, not at all. I graduated the year of 1999 at the Australian Defence College in a class of roughly high level defence personnel from 22 countries including the Middle East and we all got on very well and socialised out of college hours.

Maybe I am getting older but I am well and truly over, not only the Middle East but also having Australia's defence personnel doing their best but being thrown into the unassailable abyss that is the Middle East.

Having the MiddIe East shoved into my face on every news media platform for over 60 years,  I am now an official non-believer, or even a passive observer. Neither am I a student, an interested party,  or even having an opinion on the matter.

I am over it, for good, and it feels good as well.

I don't think you can call Afghanistan the middle East.

But, as oil becomes less important, so will the middle East.

Maybe then we will stop interfering.

Although we will still probably keep selling them weapons.

I don’t agree that the Middle East has been shoved in our face for 60 years, you may have had more coverage here in Australia, my main memory growing up was to start with the Vietnam war , always remember them shoving choppers off the ships deck into the water and after that the troubles in Northern Ireland .

I don't remember hearing much about the Middle East/Afghanistan until about the late 1980s.  My sister lived in Israel for two years in the 70s and travelled a lot all around the Middle East and Afghanistan for work and on holiday.   She despairs at the sh*t hole it has become.  She has memories of a far different place.  Pics of Afghanistan in the 70s.

I remember the creation of a  new country, Israel in the late 40’s; the Shah Of Persia, being ousted in the early 50’s by a cleric, the ayatollah Khomeni; the Suez crisis in the late 50’s and again  in the late 60’s and several minor wars between Israel.and Palestinian factions over a number of years. None of which was to do with oil, but with ‘political religion’.

Cheers, Bobj.

Your memory might be letting you down bobj. The Shar was a puppet imposed by the west in the 1950s because the democratically elected government tried to nationalize the oil industry.

The shar was deposed around 1980 by the ayatollah Khomeini.

I thought the Shah was deposed in the late 70s.

Israel and Palestine have been having stoushes for decades    ........................  seems never ending.

My sister went to Israel not long after the Yom Kippur war.  I remember it took nearly 5 hours for her to go through check-in at Heathrow because of heightened security.

My teens and early twenties were all about the Vietnam war and the Irish troubles    .......................  on the news every night.

I think December 1979 the ayatollah Khomeini became leader to be precise. Although it was brewing for a couple of years before. Shar exiled Jan 1979.

Why don’t you understand how?  Oh, and they weren’t in caves, they had entire villages under their control.

Because in your post above you state that soldiers were starving. Doesn't it make you wonder how the Taliban managed all those years, first fighting the Russians and then the US led coalition.

They lived in Pakistan, where they couldn't be touched

The same as the Viet Cong who lived in Cambodia.

Afghanistan soldiers were executed after surrendering because they ran out of ammunition. This is documented.

Am I wrong to watch the para Olympics, and then go looking for which bits are missing? I just find it really hard not to.

I'm putting my neck on the chopping block here     .......................  Pakistan would be one of the shitt*est countries in that whole area.

Because they owned the regions and therefore the villages and forced the natives to feed them.  You need to do a little research.  Think about the girl that was shot dead this week, after refusing to cook for 15 of them four times.
