Is anyone attending the above in Newcastle this weekend? As it was by invitation only I didn't think for one minute we'd get a reply when I registered on the site, however, was wondering if anyone has been in the past, is it worth attending? Don't want to travel to Newcastle if it's likely to be a waste of time.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thats what it says when you go to register.

Ah right, can't remember it's been a while since I registered. I'm hoping it isn't like the the expos where their only interested in you if you have pr or are in healthcare or engineering.

Boycott the Open Day...

Brilliant suggestion. I'd love to see hundreds of people outside with banners - highlighting the lack of respect and consideration the Aus Govt have for people who have already applied.

Alternatively, I'd love everyone to go in and ask how they can can sit there and encourage more people to apply then expect them to wait up to 3 years for a visa - but still pay their non-refundable, full fee in advance.

Maybe if the organisers get a horror response, the message will get back to the ivory tower in Canberra.

I'm going as we have received an invite (OH is a mechanic) once you receive the invite it explains what will be there and what seminars are going on.

At the end of the day we're on this forum because we want to go to OZ.

The open day will be as useful as you make it!

I disagree with your post, we have been to expos in the past and like I said in my original post we have found employers etc., only seem interested if you have pr already unless your in healthcare or engineering. When attending these events we have always gone with an open mind hoping that we may be lucky enough to find a sponsor. If we do attend then hopefully we may be able to get some answers to some questions relating to the recent changes and how it has affected so many people who were almost at visa grant.

Hi,

Have posted the link, you need to register on the site and hope you get an invite australianstates.co.uk

OK - posted on the site and have received an invite for Saturday morning at Newcastle. Will be attending from 10:00 until 13:00. I'll see what both the state representatives and the DIAC have to say about the situation of non-CSL applicants.

And if that doesn't get me kicked out I'll be looking to see if I can secure an employer sponsorship !!

We don't have PR and do not work in healthcare or engineering.

It wasn't till we went to such an expo we realised what opportunities there were sponsorship wise and from there managed to research, get contacts and gain sponsorship.

I too agree that the changes that have happened over the last few months have affected a lot of people , us included.

I stand by my original statement the open day will be as useful as you make it whether that is getting answers to your questions or by trying to make contacts to secure sponsorship.

I hope it goes well for you on Saturday

Thanks for your well wishes, however, employment prospects for construction trades are entirely different for those that can be directly employed such as your oh. I too have tried to follow the employment sponsorship route but on advice of our agent was told that it will be near on impossible to find a sponsor purely because construction trades work on a self-employed basis sub-contracting to main contractors pretty much as they do here, so unfortunately for us the employment sponsorship route doesn't appear to be an option for us.

OK.. so I didn't get kicked out of the Migration Open Day, but I also don't think I was very popular... I could be wrong though. Apologies in advance if it's a bit lengthy.

My first discussion was with a representative from the DIAC. I asked her about the visa application process and was given a guide called 'Australian visas for overseas skilled workers' to read and digest. After having a quick look through this brochure (publish date of Aug 2008) I asked her about processing times for state sponsored visa applications. Rather than beat around the bush I asked her straight what I could expect as a non-CSL state sponsored visa applicant with regards to processing time.. she referred to a separate list and then shrugged and said 'some time in 2013' but as I'd lodged already 'OK then sometime in 2012'. It was admitted that as my application had been lodged in June I was in a better position that a lot of other people but hey!! I asked why the above brochure, which was being handed out to anyone who showed interest at the stand, still says '12 to 15 months' for the visa application time, when people who have already lodged are being told to expect to wait 24+ months. Also was this glaringly obvious error being pointed out to perspective migrants..?? Not that I could see. I suggested strongly that they ensured that people were not mislead into thinking they could take the state sponsorship route (without a CSL occupation) and expect to get a visa any time in the next 3 years. Maybe that they should think again about giving out the brochure as it was so misleading? The discussion then moved on to whether there was likely to be any 'good news' for non-CSL SS applicants (and others) from the meeting that is to happen in November (state governments vs DIAC). The simple answer was 'don't get your hopes up' as there isn't likely to be anything going to change as an outcome from that discussion. So.. I'm not going to get my hopes up for any change this side of the revised CSL/MODL/FSL in Dec/Jan.

After leaving the DIAC stand feeling a little down I headed over to the quietest state government stand. The guy from Victoria state was really friendly and helpful and was very keen to explain that the state could offer sponsorship for certain professions towards gaining a visa. I asked if that sponsorship was limited to the professions on the CSL to which I was advised 'no - the state have a list..'. Checking with him on a specific example (Chef) I then asked how they were handling the fact that as the quoted profession wasn't on the CSL I wouldn't get a visa, even with their sponsorship, until 2013. He seemed surprised that I knew this and looked a bit unsure what to say. I pressed that there seemed very little point of me, as a chef (only an example you understand), gaining state sponsorship if I was then faced with a 3 year wait (with no guarantees) to get my visa. He admitted that the state were unhappy with the situation but, as expected, could not say what if anything was likely to change. I mentioned the meeting in Nov with the DIAC and he said that the states intended to express to the DIAC just how much of an impact the current policy is having on their migration programs. I guess the question is will the DIAC take any notice of this concern, or as I suspect, just pay it lip service. In an attempt to go away from the open day with something to cheer me up I asked about employer sponsorships and what, if anything, the states were doing to encourage employers to be aware/sign-up to the ENS/RSMS route. I was surprised when he advised that the Victoria state government had a 'scheme' to help specifically with the RSMS area. This entailed a section on their web site, where you could submit a covering letter and your resume, this information would then be passed on to perspective regional employers to see if they'd be interested in offering sponsorship. Nice idea I thought... will check that out when I get home.

I left the open day having had my suspicions on what DIAC would say confirmed and also a glimmer of hope (yet another one) in respect to the RSMS scheme. However on checking their web site on returning home I've not managed to find anything regarding this RSMS scheme anywhere.. feeling a bit like I was fobbed off with something just to get rid of me!?!

Apart from the obvious fact that I'm not happy with the current situation with non-CSL SS applications, specifically those lodged before 23/9, I had to feel really sorry for the people attending the open day that were just starting on the road to their Oz dream. I just hope that they do a lot of research and put a great deal of thought into what is really involved with getting a Oz visa and don't just take everything that was handed out to them as a given fact.

We made it there after a long drive this afternoon, just got there about 15 mins before the end, had a chat with a helpful guy on the Vic stand (said "thanks for the sponsorship").

Other than that there where stands for SA (nice logo "Sod this" referring to english weather etc), DIAC, WA, a removal firm and financial advisers. Didn't see any employer stands there.
