Guest stbb
Hi there, we are hoping to be moving to melbourne early 2010 and had just about decided on point cook as place to live. I know there has been other posts on broadband and avalability in point cook/ sanctuary lakes but i have just spent a few hours looking at this map ADSL2+ Broadband for the suburb POINT COOK (VIC) and am now very nervious about moving to area. I really need broadband for job and home and it looks like point cook is a bit of a dead zone for broadband. I am looking to hear from people who are there or have moved there about avalability. I also belive that sanctuary lakes is all cable and avalability there as map said there are problems there to. Any help ?? steve
Guest The Pom Queen
Unfortunately Australia is behind the times and a lot of the new estates do not have broadband and your only option is dial up or if you are lucky wireless boradband but even then the service can be rubbish. When we bought our house we didn't even think about checking for broadband availability and ended up trying to run two online businesses on dial up, umm never again. The first thing we look at now when choosing a property is what the internet service is like. I know Sanctuary Lakes have a sister development Sandhurst and they use the optical fibre network but as far as I am aware Sanctuary Lakes does have broadband but they say outside of the development it is just dial up. Although you may be able to get broadband in some parts of Point Cook but which parts is unknown. Sorry I cannot give you a more positive answer. Guest stbb
Hi there, thanks for the reply. I started checking houses against the map and found just about every cheap house had no broadband. I belive that some of the area is covered by cable and that has its own isp but is very expensive. I have sent a few emails to people but as aways you never get any replys. Is thst a problem only realy on new estates or all over? Is wiresless a option as in uk its not any better that dial up? I really dont think i could go back to those speeds. KazzE
You are very wise to check this out, I would always do this now after the stress getting connected caused me recently. short version We moved to Deer Park, new development, assumed super duper broadband........ 3 weeks of toing and froing between Telstra and TPG (our internet provider) and we finally know (well I am still not sure if they have told me this just to shut me up!!) that we have pairgain on our phone line, for weeks I had one person saying we did not have it then another saying we did then another telling me that we were with a completely different exchange and would be lucky to get dial up !! from TPG We have identified that Telstra is presently unable to provide the ADSL2+ service to your phone line 039******4, as your telephone line is configured in such a way that it is incompatible with ADSL2+ Services. The telephone line connected at your premises is on what's called a "Pair Gain" system. This means that your telephone service is sharing copper wire between your premises and local telephone exchange with another telephone number. While a "Pair Gain" system is perfectly adequate for normal voice transmission of telephone conversations, it will not allow the full output of data via an ADSL2+ Connection. Please be advised that as long as your phoneline is on Pair Gain System, we are unable to provide you ADSL 2 plus connection This has happened because the developers were cheapskates and cut corners on the provision of telephone cable. Having said that we do have ADSL 1 and the connection speed is good, as good as I had at our other house with ADSL 2+ It is very hard for them to test what you can have without a working phone number so I am not sure how you can be absolutely sure that you can get the connection you want. Other than buying next door to a PIO er who can confirm what they have ;0) Mobile wireless is not available everywhere either and is very expensive, I could not get it where I am and cable is not here yet either. Good luck Karen P.S Still love being here though:wubclub:
Guest stbb
Thanks for that. I will have to get to know all the pio people around there and try and get a house within wireless range and offer to pay there bill if i can conect to there network. I am supprised no one had done that in ozz yet as i read about people in london doing it when broadband first became avalable but was expensive ( sound familiar). They would all chip in and pay bill and everone use it. You do seem to get good speeds down in ozz so pleanty of bandwith and if you get high usage plan there is plenty of download limit. If you house has cable is it easyer to get internet throught that?
leanda
I moved to Point Cook about 6 months ago and was flabergasted that there was no broadband!! I have huge arguments with both Teltra and Optus but there wasn't much I coudl do in the end. We ended up getting secured wireless broadband through Telstra. You shoudl have no problems. I know that reception can be a bit iffy in the newer estates but that will change quite quickly as they get built up which is happening quite quickly. Hope everything goes well. Guest stbb
Hi, i have just had reply from club com in sanctuary lakes about the problem and it even apperes to be i there too, even thought there info said it is cables. It all looks like it was the developers cutting corners when laying cables ( what was specified to what went in ) and the now have a huge problem. What spped are you getting from wireless? and how far into point cook are you? We have to rent for couple of years and tbh i can not live with out broadband ( food, beer ect yes but not broadband). I have been told that within 7 years all homes will have 100mb cable broadband starting form last year. Is the wireless broadband like dongle you get in us, as i have had these and there are almost as bad as dial up. Thanks steve
Guest tess
hi steve, we live in point cook and started off with wireless after asking for ADSL. We were told that we could only get wireless with a 12gb limit!!! After a lot of arguing and being told there where not enough ports in the area. After hounding them everyweekend they eventually gave in and gave us ADSL with 25gb limit. We wish we had looked more closely into other providers as telstra not that great and cost is expensive compaired to others like TPG. Hope this helps a little and ease a bit of stress. If you need more info please contact me. Tess xxx

This is on a 2 year contract, They do a special offer where you can get your first year half price. Three do one if you sign up to their 2 year contract it is 6 gig for $39 per month, however, their service is not great. Unfortunately, it is not just Point Cook with the internet issue there are lots of suburbs this has affected, in some it would be quicker using carrier pigeon:laugh:
Guest rich2476
I live in Point Cook and I do have ADSL. Point Cook is a bit of a lottery on b/band, it comes down to Point Cook has expanded very quickly and they haven't expanded the exchange. So the issue is not nearly enough ports for the amount of people who want adsl. From asking around the exchange does not have enough space for more equipment and a new exchange is required etc etc and nobody knows when this will be done. Point Cook is also littered with 'RIM's which means you can't get adsl 2/+. I have 1.5mb speed but you can get up to 8mb on standard adsl which is fine for me and I work from home. Different estate's in Point Cook have fibre options eg Almanda you can have 100mb download speed and also Salt Water has fibre haven't checked anymore than that. What you need to be careful with is who is providing the fibre. Almanda is 'Internode' who's price's are pretty reasonable and I use them for adsl and haven't had a problem. Salt Water is using 'Velocity' which is Telstra and from reading online the speed is poor and the price is expensive so something to be aware of. I did have wireless for a while when I was applying for adsl which was ok coverage but the price + download limits aren't great.
