Dear All,

I need your advise on below mentioned matter. Because, I am going to do my ACS skills assessment in RPL way as I have only local computer diploma + 8 years working experience. But 1st year of my total 8 years experience, I worked as a trainee programmer (full time)? Does ACS consider my first year as trainee programmer? Please advise me on this matter and I really appreciate your early attention. Thank you.

If you have a look at the ACS website, they have a comprehensive FAQ section and if your answer is not there, then it may be best to email them.

From memory I think if a degree in other than a computer technology discipline is held it is six years experience and cannot remember if they say anything about a diploma.

But they also usually say that years of experience is post qualification and if there is a diploma + 8 years allowance, I imagine unless otherwise stated it'll be 8 years post diploma being awarded.

May be an IA who works with people in that area who may have experience and is prepared to pass on knowledge.

Yes, It's local (Sri Lanka) institute diploma (1 year and full time). Even I started to work as a trainee programmer after completing the diploma. Please clarify this point. Thx you.

If they have a section for diplomas and your traineeship was post diploma, they may accept it but it is still a question for ACS.

If it was only a one year diploma course, it could be that they will not accept that and again check with ACS.

Here is the RPL description:

"We require all RPL Applicants to still provide any relevant education they hold. Applicants who apply for RPL and do not hold a recognised academic tertiary qualification will have deducted from their total work experience a period of relevant IT professional experience deemed necessary to have reached the level of qualification allocated. For example, if an applicant is allocated a qualification level equivalent to a 2-year diploma, they will have two years deducted from the total of their recognized work experience, and therefore eight years in total will be needed. RPL Applicants are expected be able to provide detailed work references."

So, I am still thinking about your comment by comparing above statement. Do you have any idea?

Hi Shehandeen,

The reason that you need 8 years of work experience is exactly because the ACS assumes you needed some time to reach "professional level". It is common practice for the ACS deduct 2 years from the working experience for the RPL route. To obtain a possitive RPL assessment you need 6 years at "professional level" (after the reduction of time the ACS deems required to achieve professional level).

So your first year will be counted in the work experience, you probably get 2 yrs deducted and end up with the required minimum of 6 yrs. Nothing to hold you back there to apply biggrin.gif

Cheers,

Sylvia

The first hurdle I see you having to get over is getting allocation as for a two year diploma when you have said your was a one year course.

It may only be an application to ACS that will determine the outcome.

@Wanderer: RPL route assumes you have no formal qualifications so this point is not relevant (or better said, the allocated qualification level is relevant but only to determine how many years of work experience are required in excess of 6 yrs to meet the RPL work experience requirement, the duration of study is irrelevant here but can result in less time required as some formal education is followed) .

@Shehandeen: What is relevant and was just hinted at in another forum (thanks for that!) is that with a diploma there might be an option to get assessed under Group B. Read the PIMs guidelines carefully for the requirements and consider use of a subject matter experienced migration agent to see if you can use this (much shorter) route.

Cheers,

Sylvia
