Guest suzewoo
Hi, I'm relocating to Perth in 3 weeks time and have 6 weeks to find somewhere to live. I'm going to work in the centre of CBD (St Georges Terrace), so will likely be commuting. My wish list: Coastal suburb 2 or 3 bedroomed townhouse, beach front, close to public transport to get bus or train to CBD. I've been getting mixed reports about the above 3 coastal suburbs, so was needing some help to make up my mind. I am single, so looking for a safe area also and want to avoid a family orientated suburb. I'm laid back and imagine the beach community & lifestyle would suit be best. How much rental for 2 or 3 bedroomed townhouse How easy will it be to get beachfont property How difficult to get fully furnished property How easy access to public transport to commute to CBD How long is commute from each of these suburbs Social/ nightlife available in these suburbs What times does public transport stop in the evenings from CBD Any help would be much appreciated, Suzanne
suzy+1
Some bars/restaurants in Cottesloe and Scarborough, but would really need to head else where for a proper night out. Scarborough/city beach about 15-20 mins drive to CBD depending on traffic, same for Cottesloe. Trainline from Cottesloe goes straight to CBD, bus from City Beach, and train or bus from scarborough depending on exact location. Prices.......expensive, Especially for beach side, id say anywhere from $600 p/fortnight + easily, for 2/3 bdr town house.
Guest mmille19
cottesloe is awesome place to live, lived on beach front in a fab flat a few mins away from cafe strip and loved it... go to cott!

emmaj
If you didn't mind being more inland I would suggest subiaco as that's a lively area with a young but not too young vibe. Lots of newish furnished appartments around there and only a ten min drive to cottesloe beach. Also it's within the free zone for transport into cbd. windswept
There are also subtle differences in the people living in each suburb. For example, Cottesloe is perceived as being home to the 'latte set' - quite a few stay at home mums who drive BMWs/Mercs and have 'the help' in to do the cleaning, the yummy mummy types, etc. Scarborough tends to be a younger group, attracts a lot of backpackers etc. City Beach is expensive, tends to have a lot of older/retired couples who have lived there for decades. Guest syllabub
Hi, I live near the beach so wanted to add to the above. Try looking at the main real estate website www.reiwa.com.au for properties for rent and sale - I think that you can apply online. I just looked at City Beach and there are 10 properties for rent, from $440 to $2000 per week. It's a nice suburb, low density, lots of bushland, 2 small shopping centres with 7-day shopping. Nowhere near a train station, so you would have to get a bus, drive or cycle. Tends to be a family suburb (very well-heeled families!). There's a restaurant and a cafe at 2 different parts of the beach, cafes at 1 shopping centre, no pub. Scarborough is immediately north of City Beach and has much more variety of accommodation, plus tourist places. Has a large development on the beach, Observation Rise, that has furnished apartments to rent, plus Sandcastles and Seashells. Huge developments are planned along the coast, eg a new 8 storey building currently being built on Brighton Road/Esplanade - so building noise and vehicles might bother you. Scarborough is a huge surburb, so plently of choice. Two bus routes to 2 different stations on northern line. Route 400 pretty frequent, go to Glendalough station, but through VERY BUSY Osborne Park, about 20 mins to train station. Same sort of time to Stirling station on route 421, but services less frequent. On weeknight, 4 buses between 6-7pm, then 2 from 7-7.30pm, then only hourly after that. Not necessarily safe to travel on buses, or to be waiting at train station. I don't know Cottesloe as well, but like Scarborough, you get a mix of young and families. I live within walking distance of Scarborough but almost never go there, but then we have small kids and it's not our type of place. Cottesloe has benefit of train stations, but is much more expensive. Also has some problems with binge drinking and occasional fights, as does Scarborough. Cottesloe is very much more up-market and recently was announced to be the most expensive suburb in Australia. Someone else suggested Subiaco, away from the beach, but a great suburb. There's also Nedlands and Claremont (river suburbs). These suburbs known as western suburbs and are most expensive in Perth. I would also suggest Mosman Park, just to the east of Cottesloe, divided by the railway line, so it has 2 stations. You can walk or cycle from there to the south side of Cottesloe Beach, it's very close to Fremantle, cheaper than Cottesloe and has a wide variety of accommodation. It's also a river suburb, so some great walking and cycling there. There's also furnished and unfurnished accommodation. Some of the blocks of units (= flats) are very large (I would avoid Dover Court, for example), larger ones tend to have pools if you can't make it to the beach. Look at www.transperth.wa.gov.au for bus/train timetables. If I can help with any more info, let me know.

Guest
If you want to go surfing (or find yourself a surf dude!) head to Scarborough, although I agree with others about Subi, if I was single I'd head there.
Guest beckerboodles
hi, I agree with the others and just wanted to add rentals on the coast are expensive. Especially the seafront ones! look a few streets back fron the coast and it gets cheaper. Subi would be great if you want nightlife, as would lederville. ( leederville has a direct train to the city too) I would recomend looking at shared houses, a great way to meet people and get into a nicer suburb for a cheaper rental as you share the cost with others. renting houses in Perth is expensive, we pay $460 per week for a 3 bed 2 bathroom town house in Balcatta ( not a great suburb) and ones in Trigg or Scarborough were a lot more for smaller / older / grubbier places for the same amount - just to give you an idea. on the beachfront, furnished in the areas you are looking at would be upwards of $600 per week i think. Because they tend let them as holiday lets. my cousin has just been staying in an apartment opposite the beach (accross busy road from ocean) in scarborough and that was costing them $900 per week! check out www.realestate.com.au for shared houses check www.gumtree.com.au or realesate.com.au have some. or the local paper The west australian I think probably best to work out what your lifestyle is going to be, because no point in paying a premium to be on the coast if you spend a fortune getting into subi / city for socialising or work and never go to the beach except once a week. And you probably won't want to visit the beach in the winter cos it's too cold! also gets very windy on the coast becuase of the freemantle doctor. (wind that comes every afternoon) Good Luck
Guest suzewoo
Folks, Just to update, I managed to get a fabulous 3 bedroomed apartment, $550 a week and 1 minute from the beach. I got it by complete fluke, but love it. I work in the city so when I come home, I can open my living room door and hear the ocean! Every bedroom & livingroom has a view of the beach, secure gating and private footpath to the beach! AEWSOME...away to learn to surf now & maybe get me a surfer dude ) Go for what you want, as you might just get it. I did. Suzewoo
