Shaz36
Hi Jo, In QLD, If they were born 1/7/02-30/6/03 then they start yr 2 in 2010. Did you keep them back from starting P1 in 2007? My wee one is the same age, but she is in P3. When we go out, given that she'd be in year 2, I would expect her to be ahead in some areas as she started school at 4 1/2 , although it will be completely different so she may not be ahead in everything. I dont think there's any point in comparing it, as they do a prep year first before year 1 which we dont do, which is full time so best to go with where their peers will be I think. Which area of Brisbane you going to, as thats where we're headed, and how did you decide on a school? Did you just choose an area to live first, and contact the local school, or choose the school, and then live nearby? Shaz
Guest LJJ
Hi Shaz Thank you for that, I went over in April 09 and was shown around a school in The Gap and could not remember what they told me, anyway we will be staying with friends who live in Mitchelton until we find a place of our own and the furniture arrives, this is north side of brisbane and as we know someone there we decided to enrol her with Mitchelton State Primary School, the webiste looks quite promising and we will just look to live around that area or surrounding suburbs. Have you decided where you are moving too? and when are you moving? My daughter is in Year 2 now so she did reception at 5, then year 1 and now year 2 so it looks quite similar... She is also very bright, I know everyone thinks there child is but im hoping she wont be behind as she is already quite bored with the level they give her at the moment and try to push her with other work... on another hand it might take the pressure off whilst she settles into a new school and environment.. I guess we will have to just see when we get there
Guest Burness2Oz
Hiya, Happy Birthday to your daughter. I have spoken to our kids prospective Oz School Head and was told our kids who are in yr4 here will go into yr5 in Jan in Oz. Our DOB's are 00/11/2000 so was told the following: "They will be in Year 5 in 2010 as our Year 5's will be turning 10 throughout the calendar year" So I would think your child maybe going into Year 3. Hope this helps & good luck
Shaz36
In QLD, they changed the rules for school starting age last year to be in line with other states. The cut off date is end June now, so your child should have turned 6 by 30th June in the year you enrol in year 1. Previously, they could have turned 6 any time in the year. I'm not sure how that works then for older children, because previously that wasnt the case, so if they're just putting your child into a class with their peers, then I assume they'd do as they did before, however, that would be the guidance for children just enrolling in year 1. I suppose you'll get confirmation from the school as to how it works for kids coming in later on. Shaz
Guest Burness2Oz
Hiya I don't know the criteria for new starters but what I previous mentioned was quoted by the head of the school we are enroling our kids into which is in QLD. Guest Burness2Oz
Hi LJJ, Yes we are moving to QLD in December, when are you going? What area are you aiming for?
Quoll
You may find that they will want a permanent address before they will enrol a child - unless you are going for a non gov school. Many places are in high demand but have to cater for their local area kids and so may decline an out of area enrolment if they are full-ish. However once you have your permanent address in their catchment area they have no alternative. I quite agree - just forget year names and UK experience - totally different system so just go with enrolment with age peers and all should be fine. Rudi
Hope this helps & good luck They have changed the rules in the last few years, so whilst the year 5 thing is correct for you, the OP daughter will infact go into year 2 in Jan 2010 as the cut off is now the end of June, not the end of the year. Hope that helps Love Rudi x
