Guest howodd
Hi, I have posted a couple of comments on some threads but thought I would put a bit of info on here. I (32) am here on a 457 visa with my hubby (33), son (7) and daughter (3). We lived in Altona in Victoria for the first 13 months and have now moved to Bensville in NSW for the last 2.5 weeks. My family have had one hell of a year of ups and downs and it has tested my marriage and my sanity on numerous occasions. However I committed to this move because I was dissillusioned with the UK and wanted to try another life somewhere else. I know that Australia is not the Garden of Eden but i wanted to live in a new place where I would have the ability to work (without having to learn a new language) and basically hit the ground running. Australia offered that. I miss my family an awful lot but i keep remiding myself that you don't know what is round the corner and so have to live for the here and now and make decisions that you think are right for you. I do not want to go to my grave with too many "what ifs". I think out plan is to look to go for a PR in the near(ish) future so that we feel less like a visitor and keeps our options open for if we decide to stay for good or if we head to another country (possibly UK, Possibly somewhere else) in the future. I can say that I have found people to be much the same as those in the UK. The school mum's can be cliquey, as can work people but that is absolutely no different from what i saw in the UK so let's face it another country but people are people. I can say that I am starting to feel a little more settled adn I am looking forward to enjoying my surrounds in the Summer. Kate
Guest The Pom Queen
Hi Kate Welcome to PIO, I am sorry you have had such a rough start to your new life down under and I really hope it starts to get better for you. How do you like Bensville compared to Altona? Kate
Guest howodd
Hi Moving to Melbourne, I'll be honest Altona did not offer all we were looking for. It's a cute village with a beach that had good swimming water for the kids (nice and shallow) but I sometimws felt like I could be in England. Altona did have a problem with seaweed last year and so could get quite smelly. I guess it all depends what you are looking for. I wanted parrots in the garden, golden surf beaches and hills and Altona didn't offer that. I know other parts of Melbourne offer all this but we decided to move for hubby to get a job and thankfully it paid off. Bensville is lovely (up until now). Easy distance to Woy Woy for the train and some shopping, Erina Fayre for even more shopping and lots of loevly beaches like Terrgal, Avoca etc. Feel like we have been here for a while which must be a good thing. Guest The Pom Queen
Hi Kate Yes I know where you are coming from, the West doesn't do anything for me. We do have parrots in the gardens down here but believe me the cockatoos are more of a nuisance screeching away and waking you up, lol. I am glad that you have settled in to your new suburb. Australia is so huge that there is a suburb out there that will be perfect for everyone, it's just exploring them all lol.
