Extra flight baggage for migrants

Hi All,

Anyone know of airlines that let you take extra baggage for free when on a one way flight as a migrant? We have found a good deal with Cathay but they only allow 20kg. We are looking for flights in Feb/March 2010.

Ta!

Hi, I have been led to believe, that you need to contact the airlines direct via phone, to find out. Its not something they particularly advertise but if you ring they might do you a deal, some even give out migrant flight prices too.

Cathy do seem to be the best price around at the moment for next year.

Good luck

Singapore usually offer increased baggage allowance if your visa is PR and unvalidated (not for 457) - we sent them an email and got confirmation. For emirates you used to have to register with moving planet (don't know if this is still the case).

Hi flew in with Singapore 10th Sept. We treated ourselves to business class and got the various reassurances about double the allowances with PR visas so completely maxed on that. Figured that for the price of the seats- got them in their sale- we would take kitchen sink etc! Fortunately a kind soul on here said take a copy of the e-mail thank goodness we did because at check in we nearly didnt! They were very nice and all that but steely about the luggage until they saw and took a copy of said e-mail. Relief wasn't in it! Again on hand luggage- which is also pretty generous- took a lot through there. A grumpy official decided to ring the airline before they let us through again but we were absolutely within the business class allowances. Manchester was not happy with us oh well LOL bye Blighty!!

Some of you may find this interesting,it was forwarded to me by a very kind member who is travelling with Etihad on Sunday ,it reinforces my view that Etihad will soon increase their baggage allowance to 30kg's to bring them into line with Emirates.

Dear xxxx xxxxxx,

Thank you for your correspondence. With regards to your query, kindly note that you can carry up to 30kgs as checked in baggage in Coral economy class without any additional charges.

Should you require further information then may we suggest you contact our nearest sales office, where our colleagues will be pleased to assist you.

We look forward to welcoming you on board Etihad Airways, and wish you a pleasant journey.

Yours Sincerely,

Guest Affairs Department

Etihad Airways

Note that the Etihad website is still quoting 20kg's as the economy class allowance.

Hi, don't know how much this will help. But we came over with Quantas, business class as OH company paid for it. And we got told that this ment that we got 30kg rather than 20kg.

We turned up at the airport 20kg over and got told we would need to fork out £700, just by chance turned round and said well we have to pay, its not like were comming back. The check in girl asked if we were going on a PR visa and we said yes, so she called over her supervisor who informed us that if our visas are unused and in our passport we could have 60kg each!!

I assume that quantas would offer this to all customers going on a PR, maybe there would just be a slight weight diff, like 50kg instead of 60kg. Worth asking about?

Wow, never heard of 60kg can you go back and get it in writing:tongue: That would be great for people moving over. I don't know why they cannot offer the extra baggage allowance for temp visas as well as PR's but only the first time they fly out??

30kg's is the standard J class baggage allowance ,Qantas will sometimes allow a passenger double the allowance on presentation of an unused, permanent visa however it is up to the discretion of the check in agent and on flights that are heavily loaded there is a chance that they will not offer it,as in most things to do with airlines it's a case of if you don't ask, they rarely offer,

It sounds like you were fortunate and struck them in a generous mood, umfortunately there is no guarantee that they will do the same for everyone.

60kgs sounds great but how do you carry it all???? There are 4 of us so we could theoretically bring 240kgs with us - that could include the kitchen sink!!!! Just out of interest how are airlines regarding packing boxes as opposed to all suitcases? We were thinking of packing an 'essentials' box with odd tools/kitchen bits that may come in handy and thought it would be easier to pack it in a box rather than a case. Any thoughts??

The important thing is to ensure that no single bag or box weighs more than 32kg's,that's the limit imposed by airlines for health and safety reasons, anything over that weight will not be lifted and will be sent as cargo.

Airlines don't really mind if you pack a few things in boxes as long as they are strong and well taped and well marked .

Hi - we contacted Emirates direct, as long as you hold a valid migrating visa that you are staying for over 1 year, no stops overs and ticket is one way and you haven't already validated your visa they will give additional baggage allowance. They ask you to register with http://www.movingplanet.con.au which then gives you a further entitlement of 20kgs. Emirates are currently already giving an additional 10kg for flights booked - withthis in mind that gives you an allowance of 50kg.

Hope this helps and good luck

Karen, you can get these thoughts out of your mind, I am not putting your kitchen sink in my car:swoon::biglaugh:

I would probably use a case over a box as the box could easily get damaged and if left out in the rain which our cases once were you could end up with a soggy box and no belongings.
