Guest mathewclarealis
Hi, my family and i are moving to Oz in 5 weeks (2 adults and a 1 year old) and are worried about how we secure a rental property in Oz from the UK(have been looking at Wynnum and Capalaba along with Burleigh Heads). Is this at all possible as when requesting details and interest in some properties the estate agents don't seem interested. I get the impression that i can only rent when i arrive, same with the job. Apply for jobs as an electrician and get the same response. any help with this would be great Thanks. I'd hate to stay in a hotel with no definate house at the end of it. Also different subject, what is the job situation like for electricians in these areas? and will anyone take on UK spark to complete their QLD License? Thanks Again Mat
The Bray Family
Your best bet is to look for a holiday let you can book these from the uk.We had two weeks in an appartment in the city. Was a bit of a push to secure a rental in two weeks we managed it but it would of been better to of had longer.Estate agents are not interseted in you as rental go quick you need to visit all the agent in the area you want and surrounding areas and pick up there rental list. good Luck Sarah
calNgary
Hiya Sarah is right, agents won't really take you seriously until you are here, so its wise to book 3 or 4 weeks in furnished accommodation to give you time to check the areas out then find, view and apply for a rental. Stayz Holiday Accommodation – 20,000+ Holiday Rentals across Australia is quite a good site for short term rentals, you could also try Ashmore Palms, it is a cabin park towards the Northern end of the Gold Coast with full amenities (including a pool). Good Luck and i hope this helps Cal x

Thanks Again Mat Hi Mat Unfortunately agents will only take you seriously once you are here. It's really hard to secure a long term rental whilst you are still overseas. As others have said, try booking into a short term rental for a couple of weeks at least whilst you look around. When do you arrive? I am booked up until the 22nd Nov but free for a couple of weeks after that - click on my link below if that's of any use. It would give you a base to start from. There are plenty of rentals in Capalaba and Wynumm, and lots of areas in between, so hopfully you would be able to secure something pretty quickly once you arrive. Good luck! Sorry i can't help with the question about electicians. Love Rudi x

We specialise in Long Term Tenancies (6-12 months) or short term fully furnished apartments (min 1 month- 3 months). Guest The Pom Queen
Hi Mat There are quite a few of our members in Brisbane who offer furnished rental accommodation and there are lots of PIO members who can recommend them. I think two of them have answered your post, Cal has Welcome to Jimboomba | Brisbane Relocations and Rudi Welcome to Redlands Retreat (although please don't take their towels:biglaugh:) I know that the realestate market is quite different in Brisbane to Melbourne but down here we find most people book short term furnished for 4 weeks, however 90% of my clients have commented that they wish they had booked for 6 weeks because in the end they have just taken the first property that has been offered to them rather than spending time to check out the suburbs first. Realestate agents will not entertain you until you have viewed the property yourself and to be honest you would want to as agents have a good way of getting those camera angles right to miss out the big factory next door, or the 60's style wallpaper. Good luck, I am sure you will find help on here but what I will say as you are moving in the summer months here you may struggle finding a rental. Are those dates still available? need to secure something soon. Thanks Mat

Rudi
Hi Mat I think I may already have said somewhere that i have availability from 23rd Nov for a couple of weeks. If you want to contact me via my website we can talk about things via email. I have a 10% discount for pomsinoz users promotion running at the moment. The house is not too far from the areas you are looking to rent in so it would be a good base from where you can have a look around. Take care love Rudi x

Thanks Again Mat Hi Mat We emigrated 2 years ago and short stay accomodation was and still is quite hard to find if you want anything nice, with a home away from home feel. As luck would have it my friend has just bought a furnished 3 bed town house in Cleveland Point which is a lovely town, by the seaside, minutes from where the Narnia filming has just finished, and at the end of the train line from Brisbane CBD. I have helped her paint is all and she even has games and toys for children, plus a fab pool on site. If you are interested in having a look at some pics, my friend Ros, can send you some. She is on roslynwest@gmail.com. She is very helpful and would be a wonderful contact to have in your first few days in Australia.. good luck Natalie
Purple Princess
We will be in the same position at about the same time!!! We are currently packing the house up as the sale should be going through this Friday.... We are looking for a holiday let at this end for about 3-4 weeks and then the same in Gold Coast. We weren't sure how long to do short term rental for, are we likely to find a longer term rental so close to Xmas?? Hope someone can help?? calNgary
Hiya I would book temp accommodation for 4 weeks ,this should give you time to check out suburbs in person and find and secure a rental. (Maybe longer if you are not arriving until mid December) If you are looking at the Gold Coast have you tried Ashmore Palms Holiday Village | Gold Coast Holiday Fun! for accommodation. Its a fab little place with a pool (so ideal for the summer days) just set back from the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise so pretty central for suburb hunting. If you stay 4 weeks or longer you will get a cabin slightly cheaper. Good Luck with everything Cal x
Guest Moved2Brisbane
Hi Mat The Cleveland/Redland Bay area is very popular with UK residents because it has the bayside living and space for a family to enjoy. Many encounter the same problem you have- need ing somewhere short term to look around and them maybe for 3 months until they can get a long term rental (6 months) or buy. I have a couple of friends who have been through this and know some good options locally. Do you want to email me , send me a pm for details Cheers Moved2Brisbane

xTINKSx
Fortunately we managed to secure a long term rental before we arrived although we did have someone look at them on our behalf and sent us pics of the properties. The company we use is called OzInvest Realty. Im not sure if they have properties in the areas you are looking but it might be worth giving them a try. I was actually speaking with my agent at OzInvest the otherday and she said she has lots of tenants from overseas and understands how difficult it is for them securing properties longterm, she tries to give everyone a fair chance. Also what I did was contact the agents by email, explaining my situation and also ensured that I had all my references in place. I do know that some agents will not even entertain you if you dont have someone to look at it on your behalf but some are more accommodating. Shame your not in my area, I would have been more than happy to have a look for you. Good Luck

Guest redbrydie10
Absolutely not, the cheek of it! ;-) Any help I can give folk, to prevent the same situation we were to years ago... after bringing families 12000 miles...well it all helps. I have another friend who has a beautiful house right on Cleveland point, she is usually booked up as it is such a top spot, ocean out the front AND back doors. If anyone from the UK wants the info, contact me. She has also helped many family establish themselves in the Redlands.
Guest OZShell
Hey there Mat, I've been in Brisbane six weeks now, and were very lucky to have distant rellies to call on for a spare room in the first week, while my partner and I found accommodation. You have probably worked out already the Aussies (and ex pat community) are usually very accommodating, and if you check out sites such as Classifieds – Gumtree Sydney Free Classified Ads – Gumtree Sydney Online Community have people like myself offering short term leases/flat share for people in your situation. I understand that this is probably less than ideal for a family setup, but it will give you a chance to check out the suburbs in the first week or so, look for jobs and will be so much cheaper than a hotel! I am new on here, and I know the rules don't allow for advertising etc, but hopefully it's okay for me to put a few other sites that I found helpful when I arrived! For finding houses, the best one was Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au (we had trouble getting replies too, and that was when we were here!) and for jobs, try http://www.seek.com.au; http://www.monster.com.au; smartjobs.com.au | welcome. Good agencies for houses and jobs are few and far between, so persevere You might like to do a bit of research into working as a sparky here too - there are sooo many regulations for everything imaginable - google places like VETASSESS (I think) to see if you can get any information from them (I found about these guys from the Immigration site). They basically specialise in converting quals/experience into the Aussie equivalents to make it easier for you to gain employment. You'll probably find that some can be basically switched over (probably at a fee!). Also see if you can find out information about Health and Safety regs, such as needing a 'white card'. Im not sure if this applies to sparkys, but all construction workers need them before they can even set foot on site. Hope this helps! Good luck with the move - you're going to love it here.
