Social Workers Required - Australia

Recommended Posts

Guest Rachel at REED

Hi All -if you are seeking work as a qualified Social Worker in Australia and are able to apply for a Working Holiday Visa we would love to hear from you as we have an abundance of Social Work posts in Melbourne, Sydney and beyond.

My name is Rachel Perkins and I work in the Social Work Division of REED Melbourne and am a qualified Social Worker myself, having worked in the UK and here in Australia. REED have offices in Melbourne and Sydney and specialise in Social Care & Allied Health. Check out our website reedglobal.com or email me your resume for information on our agency and opportunities DownUnder.

If you have child protection experience and are looking for Australian sponsorship I am currently managing a large UK recruitment drive for a government client in Victoria offering great salaries, relocation and 4 years sponsorship. Please email me your updated resume asap to be considered for these roles. rachel[dot]perkins[at]reedglobal[dot]com

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi there, unfortunately we do require a Social Work diploma or degree in order to be assessed as eligible to work in Australia. Sorry! Have a lovely day, Rachel / REED.

Hi Rachel,

I'm a qualified social worker currently working in an Adults team in the UK. I'm hoping to come over to Oz in a year or two on a WHV and possibly look at options to stay out for longer. I was just wondering are there many social work jobs available for people on a WHV? Is there any advice you would give?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Cez

Hi Rachel, really appreciate your post here! However, thereks a little rumour that Social Workers are no longer priority and visas will take almost 3 years to process (heard from collegue who has recently asked for an update from Australia House on her visa application)

I have been qualified for 12 years, mainly with older people and hospital discharge. How likely is it I'd get a look in let alone a sponsorship?

I'm fairly flexible but would need to consider travel and childcare/schooling for my 3 year old.

Your advice would be gratefully received. Lou.

Hi there - great to hear that you considering working in Australia. There are currently plenty of Social Work opportunities within Australia as there is still a skills shortage in this country. My advice would be to gain at least 12 months post graduate experience before travelling however the more experience the better - it also helps to be flexible, particularly when securing your first overseas role as once you have Australian experience you will be in a much stronger position to secure perhaps more higher paying or senior roles. We are able to place Social Workers on WHVs with ease but it depends on your experience and work history - child protection, children & families, aged, disabilities, mental health are currently skill sets in demand. If you have any questions at all please don't hesitate to contact me on and if you have any friends interested in Social Works jobs in Oz don't hesitate to forward my details on - Cheers, Rachel.

Hi Lou - lovely to hear from you and glad to hear you are thinking of working in Australia. In short, Social Workers are still a priority and a shortage profession in Australia. We are continuing to place overseas workers that travel on Working Holiday Visas and do this with ease however it depends on their experience and the demand area at the time. Right now our demand areas are in Children & Families, Child Protection, Aged & Disabilities (Community) and Mental Health. To be honest, hospital Social Work is the highest paying and as a result Social Workers tend not to move from these positions as often - there are less opportunities and competition for these posts are high. Hospitals (unless maybe in remote parts of Oz) do not have a need to sponsor overseas workers as there are plenty of SWs here that want to work in them (sorry). We have just done a large UK recruitment drive for child protection jobs and this is the main area of need where employers are offering good packages for UK workers but you will need at least 12 mths CP experience. Our candidates have been offered 457 visas with the opportunity to get PR after 2 years - a much better route to go down than the other visas which as you say are very time consuming and very expensive. I would think very carefully about looking at another visa to be honest. I hope this is helpful however do contact me should you require further details, Cheers Rachel.

Hi Rachel,

I know this is a fairly old posting but i am hoping you may pick this up. I have a Honours Degree in Applied Social Science. I do not hold a diploma in Social Work (the new version of the CQSW in the UK) which you need in the UK to practice Social Work. I have a second Honours Degree in Community Justice (Probation) and a Post grad Diploma in Community Justice. I am currently working as a Probation Officer and have been fully qualified for 4 years, having completed a 3 years training programme to become a Probation Officer. I was wondering if it is worth me having my skills assessed as a Social Worker and hoping my Applied Social Science Degree plus my other qualifications and experience would qualify me to work as a Social Worker in Australia.

Do you know what the likelihood of this been succcessful is, as when i email the governing body for the assessment for Social Workers they appear confused regarding my qualifications. With you working in the UK you may be more upto speed on things. I think they were confused regarding my Diploma as they kept quoting the CQSW which as you'll be aware was replaced by the Diploma some years ago.

I do not want to get my hopes up if it looks like i may not qualify and will probably be referred to be assessed as a Welfare Worker. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Zoe

Heya,

I'm a social worker from the UK, recently moved to Oz. From what I've read, the AASW are quite strict on what they will accept for registration - currently it is a BA 3 year degree in Social Work plus three years experience, or a straight up 4 year BA in social work. I think you'd be better applying to the AICWC (I can't remember exactly if that's what they're called!) to be assessed as a welfare worker. This was worth the same points as social worker on the old SOL, but I guess there's no guarantee this will be the same on the new SOL - but then not an issue if you can make up the points some other way / if you need fewer anyway.

Hope this helps....!

Hello Rachel

I am a registered Reed social worker living and working in the UK. I am seeking work in Australia.

Could you please advise on the current situation for social workers requiring a 457 visa a sponsorship to work in Australia? Dooes Reed offer 457 contacts? Would it be useful for me to visit Australia to ascertain sponsorship opportunities before applying for temporary work? Any advise on how the process works would be helpful.

Regards

Hi Estelle...Rachel's last post on this forum was September 2010, so it is improbable that she will see your post.

It may be worth posting on the Migration sub forum on PIO so that it can be seen by others with current knowledge of the sponsorship situation.
