Guest paulh
Hi, New to the site and it looks very interesting. I have two questions and i hope someone can help. I came to OZ two and and a half years ago on a 457 visa. I switched company 1 year ago, and got my new 457 visa (4 yrs) When i joined my new company i asked about LAFHA which i used to get when i first came to OZ. My new comapny said i was not entitled to it as i am in Australia and there not away from my usual place of residence, which at the time i took there word, and being a large multii-national i thought they would know best. I am now beginning to questions this, any advice ? A collegue from another company, also on a 457 visa advised that when completing my Tax return i am entitled to claim back the cost of rental accomadation, is this correct ? I suspect my two questions may interlink somehow. Any guidance would be appreciated at this stage...... Thanks Paul
Alan Collett
1. LAFHA is at the behest of your employer. Many employers do though provide the LAFHA to subclass 457 visaholders. 2. You cannot claim the cost of rented domestic accommodation unless you are using the same for the generation of assessable income - ie are working from the same premises, and even then the total rent paid would need to be apportioned between a deductible amount and a personal element. Exercise caution. Best regards.
