What is community mental health nursing like in Australia?

Hi

I am a mental health nurse with over twenty years experience in all fields(although currently in CAMHS) and am hoping to come to Queensland next year(if my partner visa is granted!)

I have read some posts on here which have made me have second thoughts to be honest and wonder if any RMN's out there can give me an idea of what to expect............

I have a telephone interview for a community post with Gold Coast health soon and have been really excited about it, until I read about how nurses aren't involved in therapy.

Obviously,I don't expect it to be the same as the UK but wonder exactly how nurses are viewed within the mental health field and if there are any CPN's out there, what are your experiences?

Hope that makes sense and someone can shed light on this for me.

Thanks Pam xx

Hi Pam

I am moving to Brisbane in January and currently work in the community in England. I have friends who work as CPNs in both Bris and Melbourne who both like it and one works in EIP and does PSI. I have noticed that community posts are advertised as clinical nurse/psychologists/social workers so assumed rightly or wrongly that being a case manager would include therapy interventions - but you now have me worried lol!!! When I arrive in Bris and hopefully get a job in January I will let you know

Hi Lisa

Sorry if I made you worried.....it is just what I have read on other posts and just wanted some information. The job description for the interview I have does talk about therapeutic interventions, but from my experience job descriptions aren't always errmmmm accuarte lol!!

At the end of the day,I suppose it is what you make it....I just feel really positive and optimistic one minute and then panic striken the next.!!!

Good luck for January

Pam
