40 years in Oz today.

Arrived in Adelaide 40 years ago today as a young 16 year old lad from Brum!! Travelled all over Oz,had 10 years in the Army.Still feel English and proud of that, but love Australia and the aussies.Yes they can be bloody annoying with their anti-pom remarks, but just give it back and they love it. My favourite is R.A.C.C. Rusty Ankled Colonial Convict!! (Rack off racc!)

If you've lived here for more then two years then it's in your blood. If you try and go back to live in the UK ,then come that first freezing winter you'll regret it!!

Welcome to PIO,Bendigo and congrats on achieving the milestone of 40 years here in oz,I'm similar to you, been here 45 years nearly (arrived when I was 4) I'm a dual Australian/UK citizen and I'm proud to have been born in Britain but I also love Australia.

Thanks for your great first post and I hope there is a lot more of them.

Cheers

Welcome Bendigo, glad you're going along well after all this time. It's fascinating how some people settle and some don't, but it's interesting to hear everyone's story though. My mum has a friend who, when you ask 'How are you", she replies in her still strong Yorkshire accent "I hate this bloooooooooody coooooooountry, that's 'ow I am. I've hated it since I saw it from the ship coming into Port Melbourne 60 years ago". You would think we would've stop asking by now wouldn't you? !! Her reasons are valid to her though.

Congratulations 40 years , i hope you have had a great time in oz . Just a quick correction WE DONT HAVE FREEZING WINTERS IN THE UK ANYMORE, not like you remember them , long gone

Missed only one weekend of golf last winter .....more high winds, mild, floods and storms.

Which part of Brum are you from .....iam originally from Bournville , now in Solihull

Yes Bunbury61, you are right, I was surprised on a visit to Aberdeen to see friends, they said that they don't have the snow they used to have when I was there in the 80's. Uk's winters aren't so freezing and Australia's summers are getting hotter.

Got posted to Bendigo from the Ist Battallion in Townsville to make maps for the Army Survey Corps at Fortuna.(A beautiful 19th century mansion.) Still here, retired and loving it.

Bush walking everyday followed by a refreshing cold pint or two of Guinness is very good for the soul.

If i get homesick i hire a cottage on the river Severn for a week then drive around England and Wales, then head on over to Ireland then over to Europe. Love getting back home to Oz after.

Good for you mate .....i lived in Oz for 6 years , really enjoyed it .....opposite to you though ....iam home , for all its many faults the UK for me is still the place to be.

We had a dream run in Oz , and have had a far tougher time here, but i have a great life here now.

I live in Gloucestershire very close to the River Severn and there are such lovely views here from the hills - so I know what you miss.

Hi Ezzie,

I have moved to the Gold Coast, it is fantastic. In the last twelve months I have seen a total change in my family ( all for the better ) It has been worth every penny spent and more.

PM me and we will have a chat

Good luck
