Guest
Hi Guys, Im currently getting all the information together for the defacto visa application. I will have been living with my partner 1 year in November so am going to apply then and am aiming to move to Melbourne around next July / August. I met my partner last summer and he ended up moving into the house share I was already in where we share a room. We have both names on our lease, and on some bills and we are just opening a joint bank account. As well as stocking up on all the other information you need! Does the fact that we live in a house share and not our own place affect our application? I have searched online and cannot see that this should be a problem but just want to check! Guest Katc78
Hey daisy I don't think it would matter a huge amount. What I would be a bit worried about it getting proof of your relationship - ie. just proving you live together doesn't actually say anything about your relationship. Have you got people doing stat decs for you? And do you have other evidence like photos and emails?? I'm in a similar situation to you in that I met my partner last summer (August) and we opened our joint bank account in October (I know, fast!) - but we haven't gone down the de-facto route, we've gone for the prospective marriage visa thing, just because it seemed so much easier than proving the 12 months thing, and we wanted to get married anyway. Do they ask who else lives with you in your house? If so, it might not pose a problem necessarily, but it might mean they want more evidence to prove your relationship, if that makes sense - that's the hard part! Best of luck, sorry I couldn't be more specific in answering your question! :-)
Guest
Hey thanks for your reply Yeah we have lots and lots of photos, emails, and letters / emails / phone records from when he went to Melbourne for a month showing our contact with each other. Our housemates have only known us as a couple so they could do one of the decs. Really excited, but also worried about getting everything together, cant afford legal so just doing it all ourselves, theres so much info on this website though I think well manage okay! Guest Katc78
Oh cool, you should be fine then! When I submitted our app yesterday at the High Commission in London, I asked about whether it looks okay etc and he said yes, they really only don't like it when people put stuff in that's totally not relevant, like random cards from 10 years ago or something. Plus he said to avoid paperclips and dividers and folders - I just put mine in an envelope and the only paperclips we had were attaching a business card of the guy who certified our docs (a friend who is a lawyer, thank god, as we can't afford to pay for all that!) Re. the stat dec, something I learned - make sure when they fill it out they put correctly who is the applicant and who is the sponsor - both of mine did it wrong and put me as the applicant, as they were my friends originally but my fiance is the applicant! Oh, and also, where it says 'declared at' - that's the place the declaration was made, eg. 1 Smith St, London, UK (not the time - another mistake one of my friends made!) Good luck with it all - you will be fine without legal people, this forum is the best! :-)
