Assistance at Heathrow?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

My 82 year old gran is coming to see us in a few weeks :jiggy:! She will be travelling on her own, and has a touch of arthritis so we have asked Qantas whether she can have some assistance at the airport. At Sydney, I understand that someone will come and collect her at the plane with a wheelchair and bring her through and collect her suitcase etc. However, I am not sure what this assistance will entail at Heathrow.

Will she be collected at the check-in desk and then taken through security to the business class lounge (she is coming business - alright for some!)? Will she then be collected and taken to the gate, or will she have to make her own way there?

I have never asked for assistance before, so I am not sure what will happen. She keeps on asking me, I think she is a bit worried that she will miss the flight by not getting to the gate in time or something!

Any advice or help would be most appreciated!

Hi LKC,

Qantas will normally do this as a matter of course when passengers in your grans situation are travelling, however if you want to be sure you can either send me a PM and a few details of when she is flying etc and I can arrange it for you or it's probably simpler for you to call Qantas Customer Care Centre in Sydney on 13 13 13 and give them the details and their special needs team will look after it.

Hope she has a good flight-Business Class on QF is excellent.

BTW I would suggest that if you ring them you ask them to confirm the details of what service they will provide to you via email.then if there is (god forbid) a mess up you will have proof of what was arranged.

Cheers

Nigel, would they do this if the elderly person was travelling accompanied? By a daughter for example? My Nan will be coming early next year and I was thinking along the same lines as LKC..enjoy your time with her by the way LKC!

It depends on the circumstances Fiona,if the passenger has impaired mobility then most airlines will provide either a people mover or wheelchair regardless of whether the passenger is accompanied or not,if the passenger is unaccompanied then the airline will usually provide an escort service.

In some countries the services are provided by the airport management and not the individual airline.
