Guest GotToBeDone
Hi Everyone  Wondering if anyone can give me some advice please ? My husband and I are looking to move to Perth in 2011. I am applying for a place at Notre Dame to do my teacher training. I know I need a student visa and that I can take my husband and children with me and that we can both work 20 hours a week. The question I have is does anyone know if once my course is finished can i apply for a teaching job and get a working visa that way or do i need to come back to UK? I have emailed the department of training and education in WA but they have not responded to this. The first email from them did say they are not sponsoring teachers, does that mean people wanting to to come out without a job but have the skills or would that include someone like me if I had a job offer. Hope someone can help as we really want to go for it but do not really want to up root children if after a year we have to come back especially as we will sell the house to go. Thank you for any advice Hayley
emmaroo
Hi I too am going to Perth on a student visa to do teaching. The student visa will be for as long as your training is and then when you qualify you will be able to apply for teaching jobs. Good Luck with your adventure! Guest pippa1
Hi there I don't mean to sound like the voice of doom and gloom but think long and hard about it especailly if you have children. It is an expensive route (school fees, full nursery fees etc) and unless you are planning on secondary teaching there is no prioritisation on a PR visa (as things stand at the moment). Legislation changes all the time too, so its difficult to plan anything! I finished a teaching degree in Dec 08, have a full time job at Tafe, yet can't get state sponsorship or employer sponsored visa so at present am sitting at bottom of a huge pile while waiting for the recession to end (or miracle more like!!). Oh, and school fees ($8000 pa) and full nursery fees ($58 a day ) are still payable until a PR visa is granted. Please just work out everything before you come and heh,if it is the only way then go for it!! Enjoy your studies and don't stress about things out of your control . I seriously need to take my own advice there ! What will be will be ! Good luck x

Good luck x I know exactly where you are coming from, we have a family who have been here just a year, and are probably going to have to return, one because things have worked out a lot more expensive than they allowed and the other is because they have removed the occupation he was studying from the list. Hope everything comes right for you soon Pippa1 Hugs Kate

Guest Cummings
Ooops :-) Thanks Kate, it's risky but my o/h is going to be studying hairdressing in perth hopefully, we know it's been on the list since 2001 and that there's been rumours of it coming off the list but at the moment it's on the state sponser (w.a), modl and sol and am i right in saying as long as it stays on at least one of these lists we'll still be in with a chance of p.r at the end of it all..? Guest Wowsers
You cant just work full time once your qualified, you will need to apply for a visa first, and meet the pass marks of the visa, its not as easy as it all sounds. I wouldnt recommend the student visa to anyone unless they have bucket loads of money and have researched it thoroughly. The goals posts are always changing for pr and its only gonna get harder! But it can be done just a big long hard rocky road!! Good Luck to you.
Guest Cummings
Hi Wowsers, Yeah, we know it's gonna be a hard few years (my husband reminds me of that everyday! lol, but weve looked into every other way possible and it's are only option, we are lucky enough to have a fair bit of money behind us so the 20hr working rights hopefully shouldnt be a problem, plus we have family in perth which makes it abit easier Our kids are still young, so wont have to pay for any school fees, which is another reason we want to do it as soon as poss, but all depends on when we sell the house (which hopefully should be on the market next week) Hi GotToBeDone, when weve emailed different colleges and unis in oz they always take ages to reply but always do in the end if thats any help Rachel x

Tell us something we don't know! :arghh: I know it's going to be long hard expensive road but for some it's the only way. So call me naive, ignorant or whatever but I am going hold on to the little bit of hope that there is left in this dismal economic time and pray that I and all those others that have to use the student route fulfill our ozzie dream! Guest GotToBeDone
Hi Pipper1, Thank you, I am going to be studying for my Graduate Dioplma in Secondary education which is just a year. The orignal plan was to do my PGCE here then try to get sponsored but as they are not sponsering teachers anymore thought about do the training over there then hopefuly that could lead to job. school fees my children are in an independant schools here and we are going to continue with that in OZ so know roughly that cost. We know my fees plus fees for schooling, rent we have looked at, cost of car. Just the bills really we are unsure about. The universirty have been fairly helpful with there responsive, or they just want the money from international students!!!!!! Thank you Hayley
Guest GotToBeDone
Hi Emma, The plan is to come over January 2011, in time for the school year for the children to start school. My course starts the end of Febuary. We have not been to Perth before(!!!!) I have a friend who is over in the UK for two years and from Perth so know lots about it and info on areas ect which has been great, the good thing about doing the student route is at least if we really hate it we can come home and i will still have my teaching qulifation. I am sure that will not happen!!!!! Good luck with your course in September I have ECU as second uni if i dont get a place a Notre Dame. Which years are you going to be teaching? natmark
Hi I'm not sure if you know but from the DIAC website it led me to believe that if you wanted to go from student visa to a permanent skilled visa you need to have studied in Australia for 2 years. You may want to check this out as me and my hubby have been looking for a Masters in Primary Teaching course that lasts two years, so if I'm wrong then let me know!
