Guest David uk
Hi everyone, I am looking for some assistance, I am in UK and I have an aging Aunt in Sydney who is looking to come back to UK for her final years as she has no one in Oz, (she has been in Oz for 40 years). As she appears to be losing it alittle I am wondering would she be allowed back in UK as a permanent resident? would she loose pension benefits from Oz? would the uk want her as she would be a cost in the coming years on medical grounds? she says she used to have dual passports however the uk one has now lapsed, she did become an Australian citizen about 15 years ago. Any info or help would be appreciated, thanks

Guest Gollywobbler
Hello David Welcome to Poms in Oz. Your Aunt has dual UK/Australian Citizenship. As a British Citizen she has an automatic right to return to the UK whenever she chooses, regardless of any medical condition. She can travel to the UK on her Australian passport and a new British passport can be obtained for her once she gets here. would the uk want her as she would be a cost in the coming years on medical grounds? Whether Gordon Brown would want her is irrelevant. She has a right to return and she does not need anybody's permission to do so. The Aussie Age Pension is administered by Centrelink: Age Pension I suspect that Australia will not be required to continue to pay Aunt's Age Pension now that the social security agreement between Oz and the UK no longer exists: Australia's International Social Security Agreements There will be a qualifying period before Aunt can claim anything in the UK. I think the period is 6 months but it might be 12. The staff in your nearest dole office will know about this. Will Aunt be selling a house in Oz and bringing the proceeds of sale to the UK with her? If yes, that may affect her entitlement to social securrity benefits in the UK. I'm sorry that I can't give you any definite answers but hopefully a few pointers might have helped a bit. Best wishes Gill
