We'll have a service apartment to go to for the first month. But now its like, what do i do now?? We've got a few quotes for shipping 20ft container. We're in the process of finding an Agent to rent out our house. Now what?? I just need some guidence please as to the things to remember to do?? And what to do next?? What do you do with your bank accounts ? All your direct debits? Utilities? Is that it? what have i forgotton???? Ahhhhhh!! I'm sure it will all fall into place, but if anyone can help, or perhaps there is a site with all this moving information. Everyone who's emigrated has gone through this, so i'm sure i'm not alone. The only thing I can tell you is as far as your utilities are concerned surely its just like moving house over here. Take meter readings on your last day in the property, phone each one up and tell them the date you are moving out and they will send you a final bill. Now can you tell me how you found a freight carrier? What are you taking with you? Is it cheaper to ship out rather than buy over there? What are you going to be able to fit in your freight? I feel for you because I just keep looking around me and wondering where the hell will I start. We are also taking a dog with us and I want to look into shipping my car out. It will all be worth it in the end and I wish you lots of luck and hope you get some help on here which I am sure you will. We are going to Brisbane by the way. Keep me posted on how you do. If youre renting your UK house out then you need to change your insurance from building and contents to landords building insurance. Also you may need to tell your mortgage lender that youre renting your property out - we have a one account and had to pay a small fee to transfer it to a landlord lending account or something like that. Redirect your post - this can be done on line very easily. Meter readings for utilities. Council tax Cancel TV licence Sell your car, cancel insurance Open an Oz bank account. We are with Westpac and we opened this whilst in the UK but activated it when we arrived in Oz, again very easy to do online. Sort all your things out so that youre only packing things you actually want (I didnt do enough of this so I will be doing more sorting whilst unpacking when my things arrive) Book flights!! Look into excess baggage costs or unacompanied luggage costs - we did this and its helped us alot. Its mean that we have a lot more things to keep us going whilst we are waiting for our container to arrive. Like you we have a furnished rental for the first 4 weeks but after that its a long term unfurnished one so these extra bits will make it a lot easier - fingers crossed! ( we did all the above, the HSBC held our motgage and when it was sold they got paid off - the whol ebank staff new we were off to Aus..cos we never stopped telling them to move over also! - and they still sent the final statements for the mortgage and to acknowledge of change of circumstances - to the (old)address. ) Contact you credit card people and tell them you are going on agp year and will be away a year or more... coz they will cancel you card and not re-new it. Again, I did all this an dteh first time I used teh card in Oz..they blocked it! I then a had to phone teh UK and sort it out. Then I bought some fishing tackle on eBay..it was a USA source.. they blocked the card again! Remember that things like Sky need 30 days notice, we told them our last day in teh UK and they left us with sat TV till midnight the previous day..and then it was off, teh final bill is taken from your card...which you can pay online. Its easy! Call BT or who does you landline and sort out your last day in Uk with them and they should bill accordingly. The cut it off. Apply the same principle to anybody you are paying of, like car insurance. We had Orange pay as you go mobiles...useless here, they wanted $150 - $200 to unlock them, A decent new pay as you go is around $70 - $150. Haven't got credit cards only debit cards so not sure if they will be of any use there. We have been advised not to bother transfering money through a bank but through a specialist foreign exchange company, who can transfer your money at the right time of day for world trading exchanges, apparently making you money and taking a profit from the profit and not charging you commission to do it. Not sure if any of that makes any sense. will have to see if anyone has gone down that route or not. Thanks for the all your advice with the container, will keep you posted. Hi Jodielola I am not sure about taking everything I am wondering if it will be worth buying over there......anything to make life easier as I keep waking up in a cold sweat at the thought of everything! I was sent a link last night about taking my car and I just looked blank at the screen so I need to look into that a bit more although I will be gutted if I can't take it. I am going out with my husband Paul (43) and my daughter Britt (14) I am Rachel (39) and we are going out on a 457 visa. Paul has a job to go to and the company are sponsoring him. What about you? My husband kev has a job too who are sponsoring him makes life loads easier, and the 457 didnt take long at all. We had a company who were collating all our information and checked bits of information with immigration as we went along if they werent sure about it. They want us over there end sept / beg oct. so all systems go ... well it would be if i knew where to start. i'll start with my list that people have kindly helped with, get my quotes and i better hurry up and get renting my house out. i've heard that things are quite expensive to replace out there, but we want to take as much of home as possible. our main stuff like sofa's, dining table and chairs, beds, tv's etc, kitchen appliances, (sounds crazy but apparently that is much more expensive out there) We just thought if you have to replace everything it will cost loads. We have 2 children, Jared 7 in oct and Jodie 5 in oct, and they are both really excited and are cool about leaving their friends and school. what does your daughter think about it? i am 41, Kev is 49 and we thought that would be a problem, but he is an engineer on the railway and the govenment is pumping lots of money into that industry to improve it, so his skill is much needed. When are you thinking of going out there? Think you are wise to plan ahead. How did the excess baggage thing work, could you just take extra suitcases with you? i was hoping not to have to tell the morgage company save all the aggrevation, but not sure if i can get round that one or not? And didn't even know about the landlord building insurance, so thanks for that. does it make it a lot more expensive? Did you rent your house out? You were lucky to go out for 12 weeks before hand. We've never been before so its going to be a big adventure. One that we will hopefully love. Melbourne has its seasons, so still hoping for more sunshine than we get here. Have you been house hunting ? I hear its quite hard to get a property as its a bit of a free for all. last question, sorry, how long did you leave it to book your flights? Guest r17ych Posted August 3, 2009 Share Posted August 3, 2009 Hi Jodielola, our daughter Britt was devastated when we first told her about it a couple of weeks ago as she is very close to my family, but with lots of bribing and reassurances that they would probably follow us out she is cautiously excited about it. It is only leaving my mum dad and sister and cousins that is upsetting her, nothing else matters to her. We didn't tell her till we had to in case nothing came of it because it nearly happened a few years ago but my older sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and we had to turn the job offer down. Devastatingly we lost her in 2007 hence I am sure my mum, dad and younger sister will follow me so we can still be together. Losing my sister made me realise that life is short and you only get one shot at it so you should experience as much as you can in life so here we go and I will experience everything new possible in dedication to her. I am not sure when we will be going as we have only just filled out our forms and sent them back to the migration expert this week. The company who are sponsoring Paul said they were told by the agents that it could take anything between 1 and 3 months so who knows. Paul is flying out on 12th to meet his employers but only going for a few days! God help him I have given him a list of instructions and his employers are arranging for him to meet somebody in real estate so his days will be full all three of them! lol. You probably thing it strange that they haven't already met but he worked for Bentley here and was recommended for this position in Brisbane. I am so negative at the moment with everything that has happened in the last two years and expecting something to go wrong with the visa application or something so I envy you that you are past that point. I hope everything is as stress free as possible for you all and you enjoy your new lives but if you want to sound off or just say hi then drop me a line and also keep me informed of your progress. Hi Again, Whilst we knew back in Dec we were moving in the end we only had four weeks at kind of full steam ahead. Our visa took a long to time process considering it was a 457 and also prior to that we did have to put things on hold due to a health scare. So from the day our visa was granted to the day we landed in Perth it was 4 weeks!! We flew with Emirates and booked this just 3 weeks prior to flying. I would reccomend them, we had good flights with no real proplems. Excess baggage gets picked up from your home and is flown out when there is room (I think) but they say it arrives within 10 days. We had three large packers boxes and a large suitcase and looking at the costs again it was £350 in the UK and $240AUD here. We packed things like the kettle, cat bed, extra clothes, bedding, wok, a couple of photos which were in frames. Things that when we are camping out in our unfurnished rental we can use to make things a lil easier. Our landlords insurance is via the halifax and is £18 p/m. If you need to know anything else ask away Oh I think quality furnisture items are expensive here so if you can afford a container i would pack everything!! There are places you can buy furniture packages from which are good value but then there are come places where the stuff doesnt look like it will last more then a few weeks. I lost my mum in february to breast cancer, she was my best buddy and like you i feel life is much to short not to give things a go. I keep thinking something will go wrong too!! I'm past the visa thing now, so the next thing i can think of is swine flu!! The kids are due to go back to school in sept, is it worth the chance of them catching something in the 4 weeks before we go?? Of course i'm a crazy paranoid lunatic, but i just think something has got to put a spanner in the works. Very lucky for your husband to have a quick look before you go. Hope he gets on ok. You made me laugh about swine flu!!!! I am totally paranoid about it! Before Britt leaves the house she is given a list of rules: 1. If any of your friends or people around you sneeze or have a cold don't get too close to them 2. Don't share your food or drinks with your friends healthy or not, if you feel mean saying no, give it to them and tell them they can have it all then buy another 3. Wash your hands as often as you can through the day. She just looks at me and raises her eyes. Even worse when I am at the gym I spray the equipment before I use it and afterwards and become very indignant if somebody looks at me strange cos I want to say this is what you should be doing. I know where you are coming from and thats what made me giggle. I have also started worrying about the plane journey cos I know if someone sneezes or is unwell I will have a panic attack cos we will be stuck with them for whole journey and I will be convinced they have it. I am going to get tamiflu to take with me cos I don't know how easy it is to get there or what the procedure is. Sound great don't I, a really positive person! But I do love a laugh most of what I have said here is usually kept secret but seeing as you are the same thought I would make you feel better that you are not alone. All we have done so far is ear mark the shipping (who are you using) and the house rental this end. Plus getting some house improvements organised. Guest Clare&Jon Posted August 9, 2009 Share Posted August 9, 2009 Hi jodielola, we went to oz on hols last year which started this whole emigrating process off!!! not that we thought about it until we got back home ;-) went out to visit my aunt in queensland and really loved the people and lifestyle over there. have had a few 'life is too short' kind of moments that made us decide to just get on with it - nothing like watching someone with cancer getting more and more ill to make you want to crack on and live life to the full! I haven't been to Melbourne before but hubby went out back in June for a job interview and really liked it. what have we been doing to get organised??? well, have been getting rid of clutter and anything that is not going to be taken. have put the house on the market as we are hoping to sell, had a lot of interest but no sensible offers yet. have made a list of all the things that we have here (e.g. bank accounts, insurance, phone etc) that will need to be cancelled and started to look at how we would set these up in oz. have applied online for aussie bank account. started looking at possible areas to live (hubby's employers are sorting out the 1st month for us). one way flights booked for 14th Sept on Singapore airlines (flew out there with them last year and they were really good - brilliant with the kids). we've had shipping companies round but just waiting for the last quote to come through before we decide who to use. erm, there might be more but i can't remember!! have an enormous things to do list. hubby is in the garage at the mo cleaning all the garden stuff that we want to take. how are your kids taking the news? my eldest will be 5 in January so will start school out there. He's really excited and is telling all his friends about it. my youngest is only 2 so hasn't got a clue what is going on. sure she'll love it though as she is a real outdoors adventure kind of girl (but loves bags and shoes too bless her!). right, i'll stop jibbering away for now... good luck with it all. happy to answer any questions, not that i am an expert! How are things going? Paul went to Brisbane on 12th and came home on 17th after meeting his new employer, he said it was beautiful. It feels like time is standing still and I am getting fed up with waiting now for visas to be granted. I am a nervous wreck waiting for them to reject us. I was reading that they might consider closing immigration due to swine flu especially from UK as we have highest numbers of infected and deaths!!!! Apparently Australia is being watched very closely as it is one of the first countries to hit winter and they are waiting to see what happens to the virus. Just my luck that this bloody thing will put the caibosh on us getting there, fingers crossed. Let me know where you are up to and how you are coping with all the stress of packing your lives up. Did he like his new company? If your Visa came thru in the next month say, when would you go? Kev handed his notice in yesterday, so its all systems go!! ha ha, not got very far actually. Need to book the flights by mon/tues have got flight centre doing the hard work this morning acutally, as i'm totally confused with it all. Still um-ing and ar- ing whether to take the car. will let you know about that one and what the flights were like. Will def keep in touch out there when internet up and running. need to swap e-mail addresses in the private bit at some stage. Its nice to have a buddy on the same wavelength and going thru the same stuff eh. Just about to book the letting agent and PSS as we have decided on 8th October. ARRRHHHHH!!!!!! Try not to stress to much, you've got a sponsor, they cant just stop people going over there, you'll be fine!! Its just horrible waiting for the Visa. Yes Paul loved the place said it was so clean and even though it was winter, the skies were clear blue and it was around 25 degrees all the time he was there. Apparently it was going to be 33 this weekend! He also said how friendly the people were and made him feel completely at home. His new company were lovely, his boss spent every day with him, gave him a car to drive around the suburbs and introduced him to a real estate friend of his who was also lovely. This mad me happy because I have read on here that the ozzies are not necessarily the most friendly of people but he said he found no evidence of this whatsoever even in the shops and bars they were so lovely. The people at his new work are so excited about us going out and have said we will never be short of invites, and some of them had already emailed before he got home. If our visa came through in the next month, depending on whether we had sold our house, Paul would have to go out first. We have our house on the market quite cheap now, but if that was the case, then we would put it on below market value to sell it straight away and then Britt and I would follow immediately. So Kev handed his notice in hey, how did that feel for him? I can't remember cos there are so many people I speak to on here what visa you are going out on and do either of you have jobs? What does Kev do and do you work? Paul flew with Emirates from Manchester, stopped in Dubai for 3 hours and then straight to Brisbane. He booked them online and was able to see a picture of the inside of the aircraft and available seats, so was able to book ones with extra legroom, so try and do that. I think in all it cost him £891 return but one way is slightly cheaper. Some flights have you stopping here there and everywhere so that is something to consider. Etijhad only have one stop also but that is at Abu Dhabi instead. He was so lucky coming home, he got upgraded to business class! You said you had to book PSS Niki, what is that? On the car front I have not looked into it too much yet, but I am going to phone someone Monday for help with it and a price because cars are so much more expensive over there you know and I think there is no way I would get an equivalent for the cost of taking mine over. Guest tony and marie Posted August 23, 2009 Share Posted August 23, 2009 Hi guys we are going through the same process as you, we have booked our flights and arrive in Brissey on 21st October, handed our notice in at work, renting house out (as we have'nt sold it!) and have got prices for shipping, so we know what you are going through!!! Now we have to worry about finding a rental in a nice area and school for the kids!!!! I suppose it depends on where you will be working and commute times. I am interested in Bayside, I like the look of cleveland, Wellington Point and Thornlands online although I haven't seen them in the flesh so to speak although I have made a few good friends on here who live in these areas and they are advising me. What jobs do you both do? Who have you booked your flight with and do you have a lot of stops? We haven't looked into renting our property out here as there are a lot on the rental market that have been empty for so long that we don't want to run the risk of paying a mortgage here on top of rent over there, so if the visas come through before we sell, then we will sell it below market value for a guaranteed quick sale.
