emmaj Posted May 11, 2009 Share Posted May 11, 2009 Im sure Ive read somewhere that weetabix in Oz is very different to that in the UK and therefore someone suggested an alternative? So I was just wondering, what foods are either not available in Oz and youve found a good alternative or what brands just dont taste the same as back here in the UK? Just for a bit of fun really while Im trying to waste time whilst waiting, waiting for my visa...then the excited will begin. I found Aldi's bacon is the nearest to UK bacon without visiting the pommy shop,lol and after 2 years of searching i have just found a butcher who's sausages taste very similar to UK ones. The first few months its hard i think as everything tastes different to what your used too, after a while you do get used to it (except the sausages,lol) and realise change isnt that bad, this is where i seriously warn you NOT to visit the pommy shop and buy all the uk food as 'a treat' Because,,,,you then end up back at square one with all aussie food tasting rubbish again! lol Jeez i have even forgotten what a UK curry tastes like and quite like the indian takeaway we have nearby,lol. Wooloworths and Coles seem to be waking up and i have noticed a large increase in the amount of UK stuff available, Heinz Ketchup, Heinz Beans, Campbells soup, etc etc. Its not that bad and you definately won't strave,lol, just treat it as an adventure and a time to try new things and ditch the bad habits,lol Cal x Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest toria Posted May 11, 2009 Share Posted May 11, 2009 Cadburys make a chocolate bar called Top Deck i think which you cant get in the uk and it tastes awsome, milk choc on the bottom and white choc on the top, so you can always console yourself with that if your not satisfied one day. Yorkshire pudding - cant make my own! always had Aunt Besies. paxo stuffing too and a major one is biscuits! I spent a stupid amount for a packet of micvities choc digestives last week cause im missing a good biscuit. When I was in Perth last year I found a British food shop and whilst I didn't buy loads and won't when I return I did buy a tinned choc cadburys pudding and a can of custard! Bliss!!! Happy Lass Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 I haven't tried the Aussie Weetbix but the bacon is definitely nowhere near as nice in Aust as it is in the UK. I have tried a few types available from the supermarket but even the dry cure (if you can find it) doesn't have as much flavour - oh and it's all smoked bacon! Cornflakes taste the same but the Aussie version of Just Right tastes icky and has hydrogenated vegetable oil in it unlike the British version. That said, there are some very, very nice breakfast cereals available that you can't get in the UK so overall, I reckon you'll manage just nicely on that front. We have a greater range of sausages in the UK but the ones you get in Aust are alright (get used to seeing Savs everywhere you go) but don't.. whatever you do... try a chicken sausage:eek: It's hard to tell the difference when they've been barbequed and it's late in the evening after a drink or two... yeuchh! Trust me on this. I found European meats like Parma Ham and prosciutto cost a small fortune in Aust compared to the prices in England (after the currency conversion) but fruit, vegetables and other meats are so, so much nicer in Australia. I know I'll miss things like Wiltshire ham, gammon, Baxters soups and Divine dark chocolate and proper Indian food (you can at least buy Pataks tins to make your own at home), but overall the food you get in Australia is very nice indeed.:smile: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't think there is anything wrong with the sausage or bacon here it tastes the same to me. I agree on the sausages...I never stuck to any single brand in the UK and the ones here fit in the same "range" as I used to get in the UK. The various premium ones are fine and, for cheap and cheerful, I quite like the "Barbeque Sausages" you can get in the deli section of any supermarket. I scrape the stuffing out of the BBQ sausages to make stuffing and think it's nicer in flavour than the "sausage meat" I used to buy in Tesco. BTW, if you want something like Paxo but nicer, fry one onion (finely chopped) in lots of butter until transparent, add a teaspoon of either mixed herbs or sage (depending which flavour you fancy). Remove from the heat and add to a bowl with 4 or 5 slices of white bread which you've trimmed the crusts off and chopped into small cubes. Add some salt and pepper to taste. The above makes enough to stuff a small to medium roast chicken. If you want a meaty stuffing, add the insides of 4 or so BBQ sausages to the onion mix. It's that easy! However, I'll disagree on the bacon--mainly because he Aussie variety is so much better than the UK supermarket stuff that there's no comparison! In the UK, unless I bought specialist "dry cured" stuff at great expense, the bacon was injected so full of water that it oozed a white scum in the frying pan and was very difficult to get crispy. Down here, the basic supermarket stuff is almost like dry cured, cooks wonderfully and (for the first time in years) I have a jar of bacon dripping in the fridge that I can use to fry other things when I want the flavour! Get my Marmite (called our mate here) in Coles. Still miss a good old British curry but make my own with a jar of Pataks plus some extra onion, tomatoes & coriander. Still can't find decent ham unless going to special English shop, or its Christmas. Its all yucky pre-formed stuff here. Cadbury's chocolate is not the same. When my Mum in law came over she brought a massive block of it. All our friends had a square and agreed! Generally you just get used to it - it just takes time. Guest claire&fred Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 I am in Perth and I have found Aunt Betty's (not Bessies) frozen Yorkshire Puds in the IGA's and also Woolworths. If you cannot find them you can by the Goldenfry Yorkshire Pudding mix that you just add an egg and water too and it does do what it says on the packet. I can buy Bisto Gravy Granules and Paxo stuffing from pretty much everywhere too. I struggle with the Cadbury's chocolate but we have a large IGA opened up in Joondalup and they are importing proper Cadbury's chocolate. I have found Fudges, Double Deckers, Minstrels etc. We also love the Hersheys Cookies and Cream bars too. In fact I have found I do not eat as much chocolate here which for me is a good thing. I like the bread here as you can buy it with Omega 3 in it (not sure whether they are doing that in the UK since we left). That along with the milk which also has it in is the only way I can get it into the kids. Fortunately I enjoy food shopping and it just takes a little time to find the things you want. Plus the cheese here, called Coon, is just divine. I eat more fruit here as it tastes better. You can get a really good joint of beef for a silly price and I also find steak cheap too. I tried the English shops but have come to the conclusion they are a complete rip off and the one here in Joondalup is rubbish as most of it is out of date too. I agree that there is not as much choise as back in the UK. I do miss Waitrose, Morrisons etc but it is amazing what you get used to because you just have to!
